Jack is in My Head.

Jack is in My Head.
"The Pledge" is another feather in my collection of movies that have made a deep psychological impact on me. My DVD collection is very small because there are very few movies that achieve the effect I am seeking. To be exact, there are only 5 movies that have made the cut.1. Secret Window2. The Ninth Gate3. Lunopolis4. The Pledge5. The Beast (the 2018 movie with Clarence Gilyard, to be clear)These 5 movies have tentacles. "The Pledge" reaches deep inside when Jack does his insane, alcoholic fit in the final couple minutes of the show. It's something I've always wanted to do. Maybe I did. His performance has nearly the same effect as Professor Porter's CRAZY deer antler dance in "The Beast" where he holds a rack of deer antlers on top of his head and shouts, "I'm the beast, I'm the beast" in such and insane performance that I laugh to high heaven every time I watch him.In "The Pledge" everyone thinks Jack is nuts, but it turns out he was right on target. He knew who the killer was, He would have caught the killer but the killer went head-on with a logging truck and lost.I only recommend this movie to someone who wants to see themselves in Jacks performance. His performance is quite strange. But then, so am I. Thank you for reading my review. Enjoy the show.

Jack never made a bad film that I know of.
  • Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2012
If ever there was a film that deserved an Academy Award for acting it would be this film, with Jack Nicholson in 'The Pledge'. His performance is remarkable. Sean Penn directs this film, and as we know, Sean Penn does not like the ordinary, he goes for the unusal charcters that shape and define our lives. This film has a grocery list of some of our finest actors,Benicio Del Toro, Aaron Eckhart, Robin Wright Penn, Sam Shepard, Helen Mirren, Patricia Clarkson, Beau Daniels, Michael O'Keefe, Vanessa Redgrave, Mickey Rourke, Eileen Ryan, Sam Shepard, and Harry Dean Stanton. Each scene was a gem, and the last third of the film has you on the edge of your seat.

The film begins as a police story and then becomes a story of one man and his personal issues. Jack Nicholson, Detective Jerry Black, is a good policeman who on the eve of his retirement is brought into a grisly crime of a young girl who is murdered. It is thought that the killer is found and that answers this crime. However, Jack Nicholson's character does not believe this man was the murderer and goes on to find clues to solve this mystery. At the beginning of the film, he 'pledges' to the mother of the first murdered child that he will finds the killer. Jerry goes to such extremes as to buy an isolated gas station in the midst of the wilds of Nevada. He has found that the killer has a pattern, and he thinks that this town is near the area where the killer may next strike. A telling scene, is when Jerry visits a psychiatrist, played by Helen Mirren. He wants assitance in drawing out clues from a drawing the murdered child drew. What happens is that the psychiatrist is able too draw out Jerry, and the first signs appear that something is not right.

This is not a simple story, but a very complicated look into the mind of a good man who has problems. The film is gripping and the characters are so intricate and nvolved that we are drawn in as more than just viewers. The photography is beautiful and the back areas of Nevada are shown in all its glory. In the closing credits I found that the film was shot in Canada, and that was a disappointment. Jack Nicholson delivers the role of his life and once again shows us what this type of ability can give to a film. I am surprised I had never heard of this film until recently. I would urge everyone to view it.

    Highly Recommended. prisrob 01-25-12

A fascinating slow burn of a serial murder investigation. The movie itself and especially the ending left a lot of people disappointed, but you have to remember the pledge he took. Remember all the words. This would explain Jerry's obsession and unraveling, starting with buying the gas station just to spend his retirement years living close to where the murders took place. Then he involves others without their consent. It's all very cerebral and moving, giving a painful example of how fate can make you fail, pushing you over the edge when you are so close to fulfilling a pledge you made to a murdered girl's mother.

As Jerry dives into this case, it’s clear he’s not just crossing off items on his retirement bucket list—he’s on a mission, driven by an obsessive need to make sure the real killer is brought to justice. It’s like he’s turned his golden years into a detective’s version of “Extreme Makeover: Crime Edition.”

This is an excruciatingly sensitive portrayal of loss. The world-weary Jack is so human and everyman. Beat and unflappable -- until the pledge upsets his applecart. Even more destabilizing is his third chance at a serious romance, and you just know this one is different, the tenderness it brings out in the way he tucks the little one in bed, reading her bedtime stories. Protective of his new family to a fault, until that damn pledge gets in the way and messes with his judgment. Mr. Nicholson is flawless in his depiction.
The supporting cast will have you whooping out loud. What a masterpiece is this. Bravo Sean Penn.

    Filmrezension zu "The Pledge"

Das Filmdrama "Das Versprechen" (Originaltitel "The Pledge")
Laut
JMK (Jugendmedienkommission) ist "The Pledge" ab 14 Jahren frei-
gegeben.

beinahe Rentner.Seine Leidenschaft ist das Angeln.Der Kommissar
ist Raucher und ledig.Kinder hat er nicht.
Toby Jay Wadenah, gespielt von Benicio Del Toro, spielt in "The

Tatort.Die kleine Ginny Larson ist ermordet worden.Jerry Black in-
geweckte Tochter Chrissy kennen.
ihm einzuziehen.

In "The Pledge" werden zeitliche Verhältnisse gut eingebaut,da
Meiner
Hauptfigur bewusst, was in Jerrys Kopf vorgeht.Szenen,in welchen
Meiner Meinung nach ist "The Pledge" also absolut sehenswert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicholsons' best performance?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 23, 2008
...I'll say it again-To me, this is the first time, Jack Nicholson did more than just entertain.
About Schmidt, to me, was in a similar league and when he flew over the cuckoo's nest, I felt pretty much the same, but this time I feel there is even more depth to his character.
I was quite surprised when I saw this film for the first time.
The photography is rather well, and I would say the same about the casting and direction.
The soundtrack music is just right in that it underpins he conflict ,undergone by the main protagonist.
Whilst I recommend this film to anyone who'll listen to me, I also point them towards the german original "Es geschah am hellichten Tag ( 1958)".
I n this remake however, the ending was realized as intended by the author whereas the german version's ending was reputedly changed to make it a little more paletable.
