A serious G-Funk classic album.
4 out of 5 stars
A serious G-Funk classic album.
There was a time, the early 1990s to early 2000s, when G-Funk rap music was in its heyday. And in that time period rap artists such as the Tha Eastsidaz took it upon themselves to share with the world their lyricism, and we rap fans were better for it.Tha Eastsidaz, the eponymous debut album of the eastside of Long Beach natives and rappers Tray Deee and Goldie Loc, was a no-nonsense and seriously gangster album. This album was not for kids or conservative adult music fans, and that was Tha Eastsidaz and Snoop Dogg's intent. Tray Deee and Goldie Loc are unapologetic gangsters and gangster rappers, and so in turn they're going to make an album like this to show who they really are. This album was a showcase for the underrated but top notch lyricist Tray Deee and his partner in crime Goldie Loc, who is a good lyricist in his own right. Throughout this album you could just feel the cold-blooded gangster lifestyle that those two were immersed in since they were teenagers. One of the reasons why this album worked as a gangster album and as a hit album was because of the lyricism of Tha Eastsidaz, Snoop Dogg, and guest rappers such as Bad Azz (RIP), Jayo Felony, Kurupt, Sylk-E. Fyne, and others. Every single last one of them didn't waste their verses with weak rhymes or so-so flow, they brought it every single time their mouths were heard on this album. And lastly, there was another reason why this album was a hit on the Billboard charts (200 chart, rap chart, and over seas charts) and that was due to the top shelf beat production on the album led by Battlecat and Meech Wells. Those two and Eastsida Goldie Loc, as well as Jelly Roll brought the funk, the melodies, and the percussion sections to their beats.Pros of Tha Eastsidaz album: The lyricism and the beat production were the standouts on this album. They don't make albums like this anymore, albums that combine memorable lyricism and memorable beats.Cons of Tha Eastsidaz album: Like I said before, conservative music fans or R&B music lovers would be turned off by the raw and in your face profanity and gangster lyrics that dominate this album. But there's a reason why Dogghouse Records and TVT Records went with the cover art on the album and that there's a Parental Advisory sticker on the album. This is an unapologetic gangster rap album, either you understand that or you don't.In closing, Tha Eastsidaz debut album was a good look at what type of lifestyle the group members were into. This album seriously makes you yearn for the days when G-Funk rap music was in its prime.

Long Beach has been for a long time a breeding ground for smokin hip-hop artists and groups. Snoop Dogg gets Goldie Loc and Tray Dee and creates a rap supergroup. Tha Eastsidaz come together for a fully heated debut album. The album features those clean cut G-Funk beats that could only have come out of Long Beach, Cali. In fact, even though the album came out in early 2000, it has the magic and funk of a mid 90's G-Funk era album. DPG and Eastsidaz put the west back on the map with a phat album. Phat tracks like "G'd up" & "Got Beef" got mad radio play out in the west. Other standouts are the smooth "LBC Thang" where the homies rep their city. Then, there is "Be Thankful" where the trio, along with Warren G, Pretty Tony, and kam, give love to the ones that put them up on the game of life, over a nice, relaxing slower beat. it is a long album, 22 tracks (a few skits), and it is well worth the used space. The album is a G-Funk classic. West coast rap fans need to have this, and any rap fan could appreciate this hot release.

Doggystyle is a classic, period. Snoop Doggy Dogg will probably never come out with such an album. Yet this album is his best work since he worked with tha Dogg Pound and 2Pac in 95/96. Snoop Dogg is the old G we all loved. He stopped rapping about his rolexes and 50 thousand dollar shoes... He stopped wearing those wack Armani suits and returned to be a hustla from the streets. The topics of his songs are like back then. All this is great. Snoop's rapping style and voice isn't the same as back then, but at least the lyrical content is very close. But the ones who really shine on the album are the other 2 Eastsidaz - Tray Dee and Goldie Loc. Both are VERY talented rappers with much heat in their rapping which is something Snoop really misses. The album is a long one, and out of 18 tracks maybe 4 or 5 aren't good. The rest is either good or AWESOME. Some of the track really make you say Daamn!! A lot of guest rappers on the album, and most of them are great and add a lot to the songs. The most remarkable appearences by Kurupt, Xzibit, Sylk E. Fyne, Suga Free, CPO and few others. I think it's a great album cause Snoop finally brings the good old gangsta s**t we all love. With albums like Tha Doggfather and his No Limit albums it seemed like he's not that much into it. But this album proves that Snoop Dogg decided to return to do what he knows best. Gangsta rap from the ghetto. There is one song on the album - the best one - which is a Snoop Dogg solo track. On this song - believe it or not - he sounds just like back then. The song "Balls of Steel" sounds exactly like it's tooken from "Doggystyle" - the music, the lyrics and even Snoop's style of rapping!! Daamn, what a song. An incredible beat by Battlecat.
A great album, with tight West Coast rap. Snoop and all his partners all drop great verses and when the beats are phat (which is on most songs) , it's just bangin'!!

This album was probably the most slept on albums of the early 2000's. It is still a classic and I can't help but listen to it just about every day since I purchased it. This was when Snoop was at his finest, and he had the right idea putting Eastsidaz on. I only wish they would have continued with more hits like these. Classic!

This is an awesome piece of music. It's just for those who can get into it all the way and not be emotionally affected by the lyrics?!?
