    Loved this movie of a classic from my parent's time. Glad to own it.

    Ioan Gruffudd plays the main character role of Horatio Hornblower in this series, based on the novels by C.S. Forester. When I saw the image on the display box of the actor portraying the role, I thought he looked familiar. Until I realized it was the same actor who played Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four movie with Jessica Alba. I'd seen the movie - my teenage son dragged me to go see it - but Mr. Gruffudd didn't really make an impression on me. In fact, Mr. Fantastic - with Ioan, originally from Wales, adopting an American accent - seemed like a forgettable character. There was something nondescript about the superhero role which he played, and it even took me a while to remember him from the movie. However, the Hornblower series I was checking out was getting some good reviews. So I decided to buy it for my son.

    I began watching the first installment. Lo and behold, to my UTTER surprise, there was Ioan unlike the Ioan of Fantastic Four fame, playing the role of a lifetime as the courageous and introspective Horatio Hornblower - and knocking the socks off this single mom (who at that point didn't care how much younger Horatio was). He came across, to me, as being totally in command of the title role - exTREMEly dashing - with a decidedly strong (read: very sexy) masculine appeal and a measure of believability which I think didn't quite come across to the audience when he played Mr. Fantastic. The difference was nothing short of astounding. It was almost as if the Hornblower role was being played by another actor entirely. To date, Ioan Gruffudd has fast become one of my favorite actors, and I now understand why he had been asked to play a superhero: given the right acting role, he truly lives up to the moniker of Mr. Fantastic. Thanks to Ioan, the Horatio Hornblower series is worth watching over and over again...

    The Fire Ship, which is the second episode in a series of 8, is full of heroic action, especially on the part of the handsome young brave Horatio Hornblower. As you watch the film, you may be reminded of the antics of James Bond in the 007 series, where it is the combination of brains and brawn that triump over adversity. Horatio Hornblower has been gifted with these same attributes however he is younger, innocent in the ways of the world, and respectful of authority that is James Bond. I say that Horatio is innocent in the ways of the world and yet when he confronts evil or hubris, he responds with wise action every time. Is this realistic? No. Is it fun? Yes, and very entertaining. This episode is divided into two parts. In the first half Horatio, his loyal men, and a pompous bureaucrat must purchase supplies from an Iranian village and encounter plague. They must be quarantined for weeks before they can join the rest of the fleet. A young, crazed member of his crew continues to test Horatio's patience throughout the ordeal. In the second half, Horatio studies for his lieutenant's exam, only to have his orals interrupted as the Spanish send a fire ship into an English harbor to wreck havoc. It is then that Horatio shows that he is a man of action and bravery to his superiors. The acting and photography are first class. Very entertaining.

    I originally saw this awesome miniseries on a&e about 10 years ago and have wanted to purchase it ever since. I was able to find it at a&e.com for $100.00 and a few years later @ borders book store for almost the same price. but being a person who only makes enough money to live paycheck to paycheck it was an extravagance I could not afford. I just resigned myself to the fact that it may not be possible for me. then a month ago I was looking at your website and found it. your price was well within my means at $40.00. and to my great delight was finally able to purchase it.Since then I have watched it twice and plan to watch it a few or more times. epic stories like this (especially as well made as this with such talented actor's and director's ETC.)is a true treasure and I am so glad to be able to expirence it again and again. Truly good theater is in my opinion hard to find in this most progressive age. although I admire Alot of what is popular now. I still find myself yearning for the true epics of old. Thank you so much for your service. A Grateful customer.

    This series made for A&E is one of the best series to come down the pike in years. The only exposure we had to Hornblower on film prior to this was Captain Horatio Hornblower with Gregory Peck in 1951. While granted this is a great film, this A&E series is even better becuase it goes into 4 stories from "Young Hornblower". The Duel coming from The Even Chance, The Fire Ships aka The Exam for Lieutenant, The Duchess and the Devil, same and The Wrong War aka Frogs and Lobsters. The DVD copy is the best way to go (Amazon even sells it for less than the VHS) because it includes the documentary A&E used to promote the films (located on Disc 3: The Duchess and The Devil) and one on England's warships on Disc 4 (The Wrong War). If you are a fan of the books and/or he Greg Peck film, then this definitely belongs as a permanent copy of your library. I am waiting for A&E to do the rest and naturally will buy them on DVD from Amazon :-)

    This is a wonderful series. I bought the first boxed set as I know of the fellow from readng about him in all ten of CS Forresters books about him when I was in my teens. They capture it all so well on screen. It is a very true account of what life in the British Navy really was like then. Sheer excitement in this series so I give it five stars HOWEVER -

    Last week I ordered a further boxed set and two other DVDs (same series) and paid to Amazon the extra fee for "Rapid Shipment" only to be told that one lot will not arrive for seven weeks !!!!!! This is not good. I have written but received no reply. I live in Paris - France and ususally only wait a couple of days for small parcels.

     注文し、3日で届いたのは、Amazonの倉庫に在庫があったからでしょうね。

     すぐに観ました。
     ホーンブロワー、イケメンですねぇ。
     イケメンすぎると思いました。
     原作の印象はもっと、ふつうの感じだったので^^;
     でも、映像的には、イケメンのほうが共感しやすいですから、これでよいと思います。

     ところで、ベストセラー「内向型人間の時代」で議論された「人格の文化」から「性格の文化」への変容を、このホーンブロワー・シリーズを観ながら考えるのも、おもしろいと思います。
     本書37ページ。
    <「人格の文化」においては、思慮深く、規律正しく、高潔な人物が理想とされる。他人にどんな印象を与えるかよりも、自分がどうふるまうかが重要視される。「性格(personality)」という言葉は18世紀まで英語にはなかったし、「性格がいい(good personality)」という言葉は20世紀になってから広まった考え方だ。
     だが、「性格の文化」が広まると、アメリカ人は、他人が自分をどう見るかに注目するようになった。目立つ人物やおもしろい人が人気を得るようになった。「新しい文化において必要とされた社会的な役割は、演技者(パフォーマー)としのて役割だった。すべてのアメリカ人が自己を演技しなければならなくなった」とサスマンは書いた>

     18世紀にはなかった「性格」という言葉が、いま、われわれの最大の関心事になっていませんか?
     「人格」という言葉は死語になりつつありませんか?

     このシリーズの第1話「決闘」を観て、私が痛感したのは、「ここに高潔な人格の男がいた」でした。
     学生時代に、ホーンブロワーに熱中したのは、彼の「人格」だったと、いま、わかります。

     そんなことを考えながら、このシリーズを楽しみます(^^)

    ...mit guten Schauspielern, schönen Drehorten/Kulissen und ordentlichen Effekten.
    Das wirkliche Manko dieser (Mini-)Serie ist, dass sie eben leider nur einen kleinen Teil der Karriere/Geschichte Hornblowers abdeckt.
    Klare Empfehlung für Fans von historischen Seekriegsromanen à la C.S. Forester und Alexander Kent; Voraussetzung sind aber ordentliche Englischkenntnisse, da die Serie (bisher) nur im Originalton ohne deutsche Untertitel existiert und einige "seemännische" Ausdrücke sowie die diversen britischen Dialekte eine zusätzliche Herausforderung darstellen - aber eben auch einen guten Anteil des Charmes dieser Produktion ausmachen.
    Wer mehr Hornblower möchte, dem bleibt (zumindest nach meinem Kenntnisstand) nur noch Des Königs Admiral, der ebenfalls empfehlenswert ist, jedoch schon aufgrund des Alters (des Films und der Figur des Hornblowers) einen ganz anderen Charme versprüht. ;-)
    Edit: Es scheint die Filme inzwischen doch auf Deutsch zu geben: Hornblower: Froschfresser und Rotröcke
