About Us

The history of Bear Family Records starts exactly in 1975. The 1970s saw vinyl albums and singles as the only sound carriers on the market, and the early music video tapes. There was no internet back then and records from America, England and other countries were hard to get in Germany, especially those far apart from mainstream. Richard Weize, who calls himself 'a crazy collector', was very dissatisfied with that situation and founded the distribution and record label Bear Family Records. He soon released the first vinyl issues on Bear Family collecting missing and almost forgotten recordings. Over the years he continued finding real jewels in dusty archives, mostly Country music and Rock'n'Roll, and on top German Schlager tunes from past decades appearing out of even more dusty vaults in Germany to be reissued or even first released on Bear Family Records vinyl platters. But the year 1975 appears as the cornerstone to what we are today!

Editorial Reviews

Drawn from Western movie and TV soundtracks of the '40s, '50s and '60s, this compilation brings together hits (like Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska" and Johnny Cash's "The Rebel Johnny Yuma") and celebrity performances (like Jimmy Stewart singing "The Legend of Shenandoah" and Kirk Douglas warbling "And the Moon Grew Brighter!"). John Wayne opens the CD, introducing Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson before they sing the collection's title track (from "Rio Bravo").

I LOVE this western CD from the John Wayne movie "Rio Bravo", with the exceptional duo of Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin singing "My Rifle, My Pony and Me. This CD also includes legendary Jimmy Stewart with "Shenandoah" from the movie of same name, the theme song "The Searchers" from the John Wayne movie, sung by the Sons of the Pioneers; the Ballad of Davy Crockett, sung by actor Fess Parker-Disney's "Davy Crockett" character and TV's Daniel Boone; legendary Frankie Laine and the theme song "Rawhide" from Clint Eastwood's early career TV show; "Rio Bravo" sung by Dean Martin; legendary Country star Johnny Cash singing "Johnny Yuma, The Rebel" from the television series of same name and also singing the "Sons of Katie Elder" based on the John Wayne/Dean Martin western movie; it includes Johnny Western singing the original "Paladin" from Richard Boone's hit western tv show; another western TV legend, Lorne "Ben Cartwright" Greene sings "BONANZA" theme song and I'll close by mentioning it includes actor Kirk Douglas singing the hit song "As the Moon Grew Brighter" from the western movie "Man Without a Star" starring Douglas; as well as several songs from legendary cowboy Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers. You can't have grown up in America without hearing these stars and songs. Absolutely a great CD!

I rarely by a cd just for one song but I did on this one I bought it just for My Rifle Pony and Me from Rio Bravo. I always liked that song but was never able to locate it. I am happy to report that there are several other good cuts on this cd. Of the 26 songs I can say that about half of them are pretty good and easy to listen to while there is only 6 or 7 duds. You can just skip Lorne Green, Tab Hunter and Kirk Douglas they can't sing and it is too bad that they were included on this disc.
If you are a fan of westerns, movies or tv, you will no doubt enjoy most of this. The quality of the recording is fine though it is from Germany and some of the details in the written material is in German to me its not really a problem.

Pretty good compilation of hard to find recordings. Highlights include "The Balad of Davy Crockett", "Rawhide" (remember Rowdy Yates!!) and "North to Alaska" by the immortal (and in my opinion underated) Johnny Horton. It's missing "Getalong Home Cindy Cindy' (also from Rio Bravo),"Water" by the Sons of the Pioneers, the Daniel Boone theme, and either the main title theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" or the even more theatrical "Ecstasy of Gold" from that film's final shootout scene.... But overall, a great collection of Western music and definately worth having if you love Western music. My son (who shares my love of good Western movies and TV) loves it on roadtrips!!

Magnífica recopilación de temas vaqueros sacados de series de tv y películas. Hay una segunda parte que se titula "From Alamo To El Dorado" que todavía no he escuchado.
