Pablo Ziegler, originally a jazz musician, spent 10 years learning the basics of Nuevo Tango in Astor Piazzolla's last quintet. After Piazzolla's death, he continued down the tango road playing mostly songs he learned under Piazzolla but slowly developing the confidence he needed to assume the mantle as the new king of Nuevo Tango. He did a couple of Piazzolla composition albums with classical musicians including the well-received Los Tangueros with classical pianist Emanuel Ax. The album Asfalto launched him on the road to nuevo tango independence and now, with Quintet for New Tango, he has confidently emerged from Piazzolla's shadow and once again become his own man. I like the jazz aspect of Ziegler's tango. My favorites are Milongueta, Ritmico y Nostalgico, Astor's Place, and a rousing rendition of Piazzolla's Primavera Portena. Alrededor del Choclo is a playful tune which briefly touches then pulls away from the classic El Choclo in a way that is evocative but does not feel contrived. Once Again...Milonga and Muchacha del Boedo are given a romantic, dreamy touch with the ultra-smooth sax of Joe Lovano. If I had to pick something I don't like, it is the discordant opening to the first cut. After that, its smooth sailing! Although Quintet for New Tango didn't garner the critical attention that accompanied the release of Asfalto, overall it is nearly as good and now that Ziegler has found his own nuevo tango legs, he can only get better.

The Album "Quintet for New Tango" presents several strongly jazz-infused Nuevo Tangos composed by Pablo Ziegler, the pianist for and successor of Astor Piazzolla, who first introduced this musical genre. This is not music to which one can dance the tango (unless one is very good at it, I suppose), but that is to be enjoyed as musical art.

Normally, I tend to find in any music album a few tracks that I don't enjoy as much as the others, but here every single one contains magnificent marvelous music. The mix is also really well-balanced: One finds music that has an energetic if not hectic feel like 'Conexion Portena', 'Imagenes 676', music that is delightfully playful, like 'Desde Otros Tiempos', 'Alrededor del Choclo' or 'Sandunga', music that is beautifully romantic like 'Once Again..Milonga' and sometimes with a plaintive touch, like 'El Vals del Duende' and "Muchacha de Boedo" and more.

My favorite work in this collection is the 'Milongueta' which starts off in a sublimely dark manner, then radiantly brightens up only to return to its somber roots.

I hope Pablo Ziegler will create many more albums with beautiful music.

Pablo Ziegler gives us an exciting and vibrant selection of themes of his authorship and the great Astor Piazzolla. Perfection of sound, virtuosity and musical elegance is what we hear in these 12 tracks finely engravings where the new trend of modern tango established by the great Piazzolla manifests. Let us carry on the quality of this great cd where the Walter Castro bandoneon and Enrique Sinesi guitar simply leaves us astonished.
