Editorial Reviews
Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered edition of this 1981 album from the American Soft Pop duo. When siblings Richard and Karen Carpenter released their debut album in 1969, nobody could predict the enormous success they would achieve throughout the next decade. With Karen's angelic voice and Richard's stellar arrangements, the Carpenters became a musical force to be reckoned with. Their popularity spread from the U.S. to Europe, Japan, Australia and beyond. Even 25+ years after Karen's death, they are one of the most recognizable Pop duos in music history, and deservedly so. Made in America was the duo's final studio album before Karen's untimely death. 10 tracks including 'Touch Me When We're Dancing'. Universal.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024I think this came later in their career. The vocals are stunning. The songs are mature. It's lovely.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2013With Richard out of rehab for prescription drug addiction,Karen had attempted to launch a solo career but was simply not able to handle the anorexia that would be the tragic death of her in 1983. At the same time, she and Richard got back together in 1981 to release their first album of the new decade. It was also their comeback as well. Even when their non stop hit making period of the early 70's ended the Carpenters songs were still being played all over AM radio with a new hit here and there to add to the brew. Between that and TV specials, they were pretty much everywhere. So somehow a lot of people were still very exited about the proposition of a new album by them. With their outlook on launching themselves with a more uptempo contemporary jazz based sound on their last album Passage',it was decided to return to the scene with a return to the sound that made them popular.
"Those Good Old Dreams" is another country oriented song that is instrumentally and even production wise very similar to their early 70's heyday. But it isn't long before this album fully acknowledges its not a mere retro exercise. "Strength Of A Woman",while perhaps having a controversial outlook on dealing with infidelity is a slick modern type number built on a strong bubbly bassline on this mid tempo ballad. "(Want You) Back In My Life" is a favorite of mine here,a melodic synthesizer based uptempo new wave/pop/soul number similar instrumentally to a Richard Perry Pointer Sisters' production of the same era. "When You've Got What It Takes",Carole Bayer Sager/Burt Bacharach's "Somebody's Lyin","I Believe You" and "When It's Gone (Its Gone)" are all classic Carpenters ballads if they ever were ones while "Touch Me When We're Dancing" is a slower paced adult contemporary danceable pop type number and,of course the big hit here.
After an uptempo oldie of "Beechwood 4-5789" the album concludes with the elegantly arranged and orchestrated "Because We Are In Love", a Karen/Richard original very much in their classic form. Sadly as most people know too well, this was the last album the Carpenters would make in Karen's lifetime. It was by no means their most adventurous release, partly because in making a comeback they were playing it safe by offering what amounted to an early 70's style Carpenters record with modern production elements. Sometimes that results in a few songs again totally atypical of them. On the other hand, based purely on the overall quality of the material this is one of the strongest and most consistently enjoyable albums of their career. Richard's playing, writing and arrangement skills are still at the top of their form. And Karen's voice hadn't lost a note since her salad days. If this had to be the way for them to go out for all intents and purposes,I can't say it was at all a bad one.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2016This was copyrighted in 1981 and is probably the last album Karen was alive to see to its very end. I think her solo album came after this, and "Voices of the Heart" Richard completed after Karen's death. There are ten songs on "Made in America": Those Good Old Dreams; Strength of a Woman; Back in my Life Again; When You've Got What it Takes; Somebody's Been Lyin'; I Believe You; Touch Me When We're Dancing; When It's Gone; Beechwood 4-5789; The Wedding Song (Because We Are in Love).
I think the CD cover is the best one on any Carpenters album. Youtube shows the Carpenters as guests on the Merv Griffin Show promoting this album. The songs are new I think, for 1981. They are strong, as is Karen's fabulous voice. The only song I don't like on here is The Wedding Song, because her marriage made her so sad. The song is good, but it could have been shelved because of the unhappiness that event caused. The CD jacket contains all the lyrics to all ten songs.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2022The paradox of a voice that is THE embodiment of melancholy, of bittersweet, of your most outrageous heartbreaks, that speaks directly to the profundity of your loneliness, that nonetheless manages to burst forth like sunshine warming you from the inside out and lighting up the whole dang world. I hope you found the peace that eluded you when you were here; thank you for everything.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023One of the underrated album of Carpenters and it is worth to hear it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2020Excellent Carpenters album, almost perfect. Some notable songs such as 'I believe you',
but there is an absolute classic within, namely, " When it's gone". This song is a gem, it cuts to the
heart, could not be more perfect in its arrangement and delivery by Karen, it is her swansong.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2013carpenters made in america was karen and richard's final album together it has because we are in love (the wedding song)
was written for karen's wedding in 1980 and when it's gone (it's just gone) has karen playing drums and those good dreams touch when were dancing is one my favorites from made in america made in america was released june 9 1981 the 10 tracks for made in america were recorded in 1980 except i believe you recorded 1978 the other tracks that did not make the album were make believe it's your first time prime time love and your baby doesn't love you anymore released on voice of the heart 1983 and the uninvited guest and kiss me the way you did last night released on lovelines 1989
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2012"Made in America", the last studio album released before Karen's untimely death in 1983, this collection represents a return to the sound that made Carpenters famous starting in 1970 with "Close To You". Loaded with sweet ballads, it also contains some excellent songs that showcase Karen's incredible vocal range. Had Karen lived, she and Richard would have gone on to make other music that may have included "power ballads" that would become so popular during the 80's. We'll never know of course. Either way, if you like Carpenters music, buy this one and give a listen to two artists as they evolved into a new decade. It's definitely worth the money.
