Product description
Marvin's ultra funky 1972 soundtrack. Check it out.
Amazon.com
Two phenomenons of early-'70s soul--Marvin Gaye and the soundtracks of blaxploitation flicks--met on this 1972 souvenir of the violent Robert Hooks vehicle. Unlike Curtis Mayfield's concurrent Superfly, however, Gaye's record mostly fails to rise above the clichés of film music. Save for the pained, dramatic title single and a few moments of sax-and-wah-wah strutting, much of what's here fails to touch Mayfield's song suite. That's ironic, given that Gaye bookended Trouble Man with two conceptual triumphs, What's Going On and Let's Get It On. His fans, and students of the genre, won't find this a total disappointment, but with "Trouble Man" itself available on a number of best-of CDs, it's inessential. --Rickey Wright

- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2012I SEE HARRY & THE GUYS@HIPOSELECT FINALLY GET AROUND TO THE EXPANDED EDITION OF MARVIN GAYE'S 1972 20TH CENTURY FILM TROUBLE MAN.WELL ENOUGH HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THE STANDARD EDITION RELEASE OF TROUBLE MAN SINCE ITS BEEN REISSUED A COUPLE OF TIMES ONCE IN THE MARVIN GAYE MASTER SERIES IN 1994 AND AGAIN IN 1998.THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS EXPANDED EDITION IS OF COURSE THE UNRELEASED TRACKS ON DISC 1 THAT INCLUDE THE MAIN THEME & THE THEME W/STRINGS& ,VOCALS,THE 2 ABBEY WALSH TAKES,TROUBLE MAN EXTENDED VER.AND "T"STANDS FOR TROUBLE ALTERNATE&UNEDITED VOCAL VERSION WHICH IS COOL,BUT FOR ME THE REAL HIGHLIGHT OF THIS EXPANDED EDITION IS THE ORIGINAL FILM SCORE FOR THE MOVIE,WHICH I HAVE BEEN WAITING A VERY LONG TIME TO BE MADE AVAILABLE.THE REASON I THOUGHT THE THIS EDITION MAYBE TOOK SO LONG WAS THAT MOTOWN DIDN'T OWN THE RIGHTS TO THE SCORE LIKE HOW STAX/CONCORD DIDN'T OWN THE RIGHTS TO THE FILM SCORE TO SHAFT THAT MGM ACTUALLY OWNED & FILM SCORE MONTHLY RELEASED,THE STAX VERSION IS A RE-RECORDING.I SEE THAT HARRY AND THE BOYS MADE IT HAPPENED TO COMPLETE MARVIN'S MOTOWN EXPANDED EDITIONS OF HIS 70'S ALBUMS.THE SCORE IS A LOT RAWER THAT THE ORIGINAL VINYL 13 TRACK RELEASE MAINLY BECAUSE IT TO IS A RE-RECORDING,THERE ARE BITS AND PIECES OF THE ORIGINAL IN THE SCORE BUT OVERALL THIS IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE TROUBLE MAN YOU'RE USED TO.SOME OF YOU GUYS MAY NOT DIG THE SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL BUT IT,S A JAZZY,RAW,FUNKY,&GROOVY LITTLE PIECE OF WORK THAT MARVIN DIDN'T LIKE THAT'S WHY HE DID IT RE-RECORDED IT.FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE WATCH IT AN PUT THE SCORE TO THE ACTUAL SCENES IN THE MOVIE TO GET A BETTER FEEL OF THE MOMENTS IN THE FILM.THE DIGI-PAK IS GREAT WITH ALOT OF RARE PICS AND ESSAY BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN DAVID RITZ FOR A CHANGE, BUT OVERALL GET THIS BEFORE THEY'RE GONE.MAYBE HARRY WEINGER WILL FINALLY GIVE US THE MACK EXPANDED EDITION & THE TEMPTATIONS SOLID ROCK.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021I have to admit I didn't think often of Trouble Man when listening to R&B and soul music. My tastes run more towards the Philly Sound by Gamble & Huff and all of the artists they assisted through Philadelphia International Records.
But after catching the movie "Trouble Man" on cable, and then, "Captain America: Winter Soldier
a few days later, I was reminded of this soundtrack.
This is smooth with a capital "S". The alternate versions of Trouble Man are really interesting. And many of the other cuts really evoked the movie for me. For one nation, one day under a groove, you can't get much better than this.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2017I'm not what you might call a huge Marvin Gaye fan. Nothing against him or his music, but I just never sought it out before. I heard this album mentioned in the movie, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" the other night, and when I heard the single playing on an iPad near the end of the movie, and combined with the Secret Service agent told the main character in the movie, I had to find out what was so great about the album. I did like the sound of the single, so I came to Amazon and looked for it. I haven't been disappointed at all, other than the fact that the music could've gone on for hours and I wouldn't have minded at all.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2013"Trouble Man" captures Marvin Gaye at his musical peak and hits the mark as a great, if understated and overlooked soundtrack album. With dreams of going to Hollywood at one stage, this was as close as Marvin got to the movies. While the film has faded away into the annals of blaxploitation, the album remains eminently listenable.
Written and produced by Marvin, the album features arrangements by various musicians. Some 70s themes will sound familiar. But the strength of the album is its jazzy atmosphere and moody grooves. Super chill and super mellow, but never boring, TROUBLE MAN is Marvin at his meditative best.
The Expanded Edition looks well worth the purchase. The extras on Marvin's reissues have rarely disappointed - giving diehard fans a deeper insight into the man's work.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2016Classic Jazz/R&B album that is great...This soundtrack is one of the greatest ever created. I truly enjoy Marvin Gaye and was unaware of this record. I was late in finding out about this album but have since made up time as it has not left my player since purchase. Very calming on my long drive home after work or great for background music for date/dinner. Highly recommend this album. I would give this 10 stars if possible.-----On a side note, I have heard the track 'T' Plays it Cool before as a mix and did not know it was Marvin. The song was called A Touch of Jazz by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2020Smooth as silk! Classic Motown sound from Marvin Gaye when songwriters had something to say, sang their own songs and didn’t need to flash gang signs to make a point. Trouble Man is so iconic you have heard it a thousand times and maybe just forgot how great Marvin Gaye was. Get this for your collection whenever you need a respite from the whiny non talent of today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice LP jacket too
A blaxploitation era movie soundtrack must have album! Essential along with the likes of Shaft by Issac Hayes... Nice LP jacket too... Good funk lines in the songs on this album and a perfect 70s feel

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvin Gaye, -Trouble Man,

5.0 out of 5 stars Only three things that are certain in life...Death, Taxes and Trouble...Hardcore soundtrack for hardcore Marvin Gaye fans.
I have finally completed my Deluxe Editions of Marvin Gaye, the entire 1970's Motown catalog is now complete...This one is for die hard Marvin fans and fans of classic blaxploitation film scores. I would say out of the three that come to mind (Mayfield's Superfly, Hayes's Shaft and Marvin's Trouble Man) Trouble Man has this underrated air about it, most of us have heard of the other two but Trouble Man seems to get lost amogst the others. Marvin's is a filmscore genius, you get it all here, all the score, both vocal and intrumental versions...Even if you've never seen the film, the music carries itself very well on it's own...The remastering is top notch and nice digi-pak packaging with new liner notes...I hold this recording not only in high regards with Shaft and Superfly but with Marvin's other work. The 5 out of 5 rating should give you all a pretty good indication that it's a must have.
