Product Description
This 1963 meeting between the golden voice of Ella Fitzgerald and the infinitely versatile Count Basie band was not a reunion; the epitomes of big band singing and swinging had never recorded an LP together! Ella's real co-star here is not just Basie - it's his 18 men swinging; Quincy Jones penned the fantastic charts. This Verve Master Edition reissue release features 6 previously unissued tracks, 20-bit digital transfer and deluxe, full-color digipaks.

This 1963 session is a fine meeting of two great performers with a single-minded devotion to swing, a high point for both in the decade. The tunes are all familiar standards, many with roots in jazz, while the arrangements by Quincy Jones seem ideal. They're perfectly matched to Count Basie's idiom while providing a fine complement to Ella Fitzgerald's vocal leads. They may possibly be the best settings ever constructed for her scat singing. Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose" swings infectiously and has Fitzgerald scatting ebulliently, while his "Ain't Misbehavin'" becomes a gentle ballad. The same depth of feeling colors "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall," while "Satin Doll" insinuates and "Them There Eyes" bounces infectiously from the first beat. --Stuart Broomer

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2010I had given up hope of ever finding this album on CD. I own an American Verve (fifth pressing) with much surface noise and a German Import Verve with much less but flatter in quality LPs and have to admit, I too grooved on this set during my days in college. I find the graceful Ella to be at her finest and since this was recorded at the height of her career, you can hear she was absolutely unstoppable! Count Basie! there was a piano player. Only playing where absolutely necessary (and Quincy Jones understood better than anybody) he drives his band right behind those oh so sweet Ella vocals, it's enough to make you want to crawl in and join them inside the studio. highlights for me are Honeysuckle rose and On The Sunny Side Of the Street. The fact that Sinatra loved both of the performers shows that the reputation of these performers just grew year after year. I fully believe they could have cut another album and we still would have wanted more! So, this album carries my highest weight. A great followup with these two performers has to be both Sinatra/Basie records (Sinatra/Basie A Historical Musical First arranged by Neal Hefti and It Might As Well Be Swing arr. by Quincy Jones) and for Ella Fans-THE SONGBOOK BOX as well as Ella in Berlin, Ella Sings Broadway and the newest album in the discography (at least on CD) Ella In Hollywood! Better yet, buy 'em all! You'll be glad you added them. Solid Five Stars for jazz lovers.Ella & BasieTwelve Nights in Hollywood
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2009Ella,Basie,and Quincy;how can you go wrong? The band swings throughout, and ella's vocals are wonderful. The session done in '63 shows that the Basie band was still rompin. The band is basically here as support, but some fine soloist's shine through(Urbie Green, Frank Foster, and of course Basie). The charts are all good, especially the rewoking of Shiny Stockings, and Sunny Side of the Street. The service was a little slow, but it came from the U,K. Do yourself a favor;pick up another gem from the Verve Master Edition series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2010I still have my 1/4" tape reel of this great album, but haven't been able to play it for 30 years. This was an album that I had to play at least once a week for several years, and I still get chills listening to Basie's riffs and Ella's style that is so perfect with this band.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2001Ella Fitzgerald is absolutely untoucheable, a sizzling voice and one of the smartest singers you'll ever hear. The opening phrase of "Honeysuckle Rose" is as sweet as it gets.
She's always hot stuff, and this LP was recorded during a time when her voice was at an absolute peak. She could do anything, and Basie's sassy arrangements bring out the best in her.
I do have to question the last 8 or 10 tracks on this CD, however. Is there really a need for three versions of "My Affair?" Or four straight renditions of "Robbins Nest"?
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018If you like Ella then you will love this. Basie's band is swinging to the max and Ella is in top form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, une rencontre au sommet du Swing
Grâce aux superbes arrangements de Quincy Jones, la rencontre de ces géants est un plaisir pour nos oreilles (et nos pieds...) sur chaque piste. Du swing pur de Into each life some rain must fall à la version éthérée de Dream a little dream of me, ce disque est un enchantement. La vie est belle !

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Ella is on top of her game and Count Basie's orchestra is firing on all cylinders on this outstanding 1963 recording. I think it's my favourite of their work together. Quincy Jones' arrangements are superb. The bonus tracks of alternate takes adds the feeling of sitting in the recording studio as they fine tune the pieces. It is a classic recording from some of the greatest performers of their time and sounds as fresh today as I am sure it must have the day it was released. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ella and Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie - A dream recording from a dream team
Taking a break from the ongoing triumph that was the `Songbooks' series, Ella Fitzgerald teamed up with Count Basie to make this swinging album. Always a class act anyway, Ella always stepped up a gear when working with artists of equal stature (listen to her collaborations with Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington for example), and this is no exception.
Basie and band lay down a superbly swinging backing, perfect for Ella's voice. Ella gives it her all, and the results are just magical. Things are helped along by the presence of the great Quincy Jones, who did the arrangements.
The Album kicks off as it means to go on, with a swinging version of `Honeysuckle Rose'. I defy you to not be tapping your foot to this! The album then moseys on through a set of standards, including a wonderful version of `Dream a Little Dream Of Me' (Mama Cass? Nah, this song belonged to Ella. Also check out her earlier recording of the same number with Louis And the Sy Oliver orchestra), a couple of Duke Ellington numbers (`Satin Doll' and `I'm Beginning To See The Light') and the definitive version of Fats Waller's `Ain't Misbehaving'.
This delivers what it sets out to deliver - an album of fun. An album to get you up and dancing. An album to make you happy.
The digital remastering is superb, and the disk is nicely presented with a reproduction of the original sleeve and a booklet with a few notes about Ella, Basie and Verve records.
Five stars with no hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Just Love it"
Well you can't go wrong when you get Basie and Ella together. This CD really gets me going and will give me a lift if I feel a bit "down". I can play it over and over again and never get fed up with it.
So glad that I finally decided to get it.
Thank You
