This live recording was done in her younger years and the vocal strength joined with the fine trio demonstrates what I love to hear from her. I saw her live in 1974 at Wolftrap Farm Park amphitheater one summer evening. That show would have been more than fifteen years after this recording was made at Mr. Kelly's (1957) when she was 50 years old (more maturity but less vocal strength). She was the featured guest on Marion McPartland's 'Piano Jazz' just a few years before her death and was struggling vocally a bit at times. This recording shows plenty of maturity AND vocal dexterity and is now one of my personal favorites. She is at times sight reading the music / lyrics but if not for this being announced before the show one would be hard pressed to know that except for some momentary lyric glitches. I view the outcome as demonstrative of her top notch musicianship. The very talented trio (Jimmy Jones - piano, Richard Davis - bass, Roy Haynes - drums) is a real asset to Sarah as is she to them. They play well together. Enjoy them in this quality live recording. [NOTE: My two track favorites here are 'Willow Weep for Me' and 'Embraceable You'].
