This live recording was done in her younger years and the vocal strength joined with the fine trio demonstrates what I love to hear from her. I saw her live in 1974 at Wolftrap Farm Park amphitheater one summer evening. That show would have been more than fifteen years after this recording was made at Mr. Kelly's (1957) when she was 50 years old (more maturity but less vocal strength). She was the featured guest on Marion McPartland's 'Piano Jazz' just a few years before her death and was struggling vocally a bit at times. This recording shows plenty of maturity AND vocal dexterity and is now one of my personal favorites. She is at times sight reading the music / lyrics but if not for this being announced before the show one would be hard pressed to know that except for some momentary lyric glitches. I view the outcome as demonstrative of her top notch musicianship. The very talented trio (Jimmy Jones - piano, Richard Davis - bass, Roy Haynes - drums) is a real asset to Sarah as is she to them. They play well together. Enjoy them in this quality live recording. [NOTE: My two track favorites here are 'Willow Weep for Me' and 'Embraceable You'].

I had this cd before and I lost it.I really enjoy Sarah Vaughan. She was a very talented woman.I saw this on Amazon.com and had to get it.The price was a steal.I just received it and I'm very excited. This is a live recording back in 1957.Sarah has to overcome a few hurdles during the performance, but it is worth every penny. This is worth adding to your collection if you are a fan.I have to say that Amazon.com's motto should be, bringing back memories ever day.

I seriously doubt that a better example of jazz singing can be located let alone purchased. Sarah's voice here is vibrant, young, fresh (In her later years it became noticeably lower, with the high register frequently taking on a forced, falsetto quality). There is little scat ("How High the Moon") but abundant improvisation (a re-invention of the melodies to "September in the Rain" and "Stairway to the Stars"). The set is not merely musically and technically impressive but affecting at a deep emotional level (her humming of a chorus of "Be Anything" epitomizes the warmth, sensitivity, utter sincerity of the entire performance). This is an inexhaustible treasure; I can't imagine living without it.

I discovered Sarah Vaughan late in life - and so have found out what others have known for 50 years. This woman is an artist of the highest caliber. To me there is a short list of jazz singers worth a listen, and Sarah tops the list. This is an analog live recording from another time, and sound quality reflects that.

Extraordinary live album. Wish I was around when Mr. Kelly's was hopping and jazz and scat singing was new music.

Can't say more than that I'm very satisfied. Love this CD; SV's performance is truly, in the words of Mercury studios, "divine."

As good as jazz vocals get.

Sassy en 1957 ! Magnifique, ça swingue un maximum ! "Recorded on the spot" at Mister Kelly's, Chicago.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sound quality still exceeds a great many modern recordings

A special recording session from Mercury Records dating to 1957. The sound quality still exceeds a great many modern recordings. Although only 9 of the recordings are from the original LP. The additional tracks are reportedly from the same group of sessions in 1957 that sat in the vaults for many years - 90% rating. Some of Sarah Vaughan's best work.
