Editorial Reviews
Although he died at the young age of 35, Rodgers is widely cited as the "Father of Country Music" and is increasingly regarded as "the most important and influential popular singer of the '20's and '30's." This digitally re-mastered 20-track set showcases Jimmy's now-classic "Blue Yodels" style with such signature recordings as his breakthrough song "Blue Yodel No. 1," "Pistol Packin' Papa" and "Blue Yodel #8," commonly known as "Mule Skinner Blues."

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025Since I enjoy old country music I love this.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024Great quality. Excellent introduction to Jimmie Rodgers. Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2013Even with my background with all the 20's and 30's country,,jug, jazz, blues,Hawaiian and string band music I confess that I never really gave Jimmie Rodgers a chance until I purchased this album.Although Jimmie is so famous, and I had heard a few tunes and once watched a TV show about him,I never cared for the yodeling.Well.Thank goodness I bought this album!
This album has arrangements with a horns and Hawaiian guitar(a craze at the time) that are so different, unexpected and pleasing that it is truly wonderful. His simple song,T.B.Blues is so smooth and pleasant it is hard to believe he was very ill and would of course, die of T.B.Jimmie had a voice as clear as Bing Crosby, and it was the jazz age,so I now consider the yodeling just a little "hillbilly scat".
Bottom line- songs like California Blues and Waiting for a Train for example, are worth the price of the album alone.Essential?YES!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2009This CD gathers together some of Jimmie Rodgers most essential recordings in one place. A difficult task given that he recorded dozens, if not hundreds, of songs... mostly material he self-penned. The quality of this re-mastered recording is phenominal, and the playlist is superb. Of course, "In the Jailhouse Now" is here, done in typical JR fashion, emulated so well by "The Foggy Bottom Boys" in the movie "Oh Brother, Wherefore Art Thou?" And, you'll also like hearing "Frankie and Johnny" in it's original version. I was delighted to see "T for Texas" and "Muleskinner Blues" and "Pistol Packin' Papa" included in this collection. All in all, it's a "must-have" for Jimmie Rodgers fans, or for anyone seeking root's music.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2022It is certainly worthwhile acquiring this distinctive collection of one of the most historic of all country music singers, Jimmy Rogers, a number of the songs his own compositions (as is the original "Frankie and Johnny"). His remarkable yodeling is a feature of many of the songs. KSH
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2021I bought this for one song that I want to learn. Away Out On The Mountain. The rest is pretty good missing only one more track that I would have liked but Maria Muldaur covers it so no loss. Overall a very good album of songs.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2002I bought this about a year ago. Although I was 56, and had been a country music fan for 50 years, I had never owned any Jimmie Rodgers' records, and neither had my parents. In fact, I don't think I had heard a full song by Jimmie in my life. Boy, was I missing something! The man would have been a country superstar in any era, he just happened to be first, in the 1920's. This is consistently interesting material, wonderfully recorded and preserved. "Waitin'for a Train" has not been done better by any of the scores of artists who have covered it in the 70+years since Jimmie sang it. If you like country, western, folk, singer-songwriter stuff, blues or historically important sessions, buy this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll love it or hate it.
I love that my wife hates this CD. It does what Stompin' Tom or the Massed Pipes of the Scottish Regiments have been unable to do. No matter what conversation is in progress, she abruptly leaves the room at the first "yodelayheeee".
Marital bliss is preserved, a great tool to have in the jukebox.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential
E' stato il primo: ha inventato un genere nuovo :e' ancora tra i più' grandi: interpretazioni sempre al massimo: il cd risente in alcuni brani il tempo in cui furono effettuate le registrazioni primarie
