Editorial Reviews
Earth Wind and Fire's freewheeling debut finds the band developing their style and having a good time doing it. Earth Wind and Fire immediately had a distinct sound, one that was not only experimental, but also as upbeat as it's lyrics. A fusion of blues and gospel harmonies, funk, jazz and R&B. Includes the deep funk extravaganza "Moment of Truth" and the sweet ballad "Love Is Life".

- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2017A nice, quiet vinyl pressing, with really good sonics that still pack a good punch 45 years later. Anyone looking to replace their ancient vinyl copy of this album would do well to purchase this 140 gram pressing.
The music? I have been a long-time EW&F fan, but stuck primarily to their main Columbia era recordings, from TTWOTW to Powerlight. The earlier Columbia recordings are good in their own way, but I still have never really warmed completely to them, as the musical ideas at times still seemed to wander a bit. It was obvious that Maurice finally "nailed" his formula with TTWOTW. As for the two Warner albums, I especially avoided those, as at the time I had only found a used two-LP compilation of the albums (called Another Time) that completely rearranged the running order. A couple of tracks showed up on the 3-CD EW&F anthology, The Eternal Dance.
It wasn't until I found the CD releases of the first two albums where I finally heard both in the correct running order. The Need of Love, the second release, is somewhat a disjointed effort. But this self-titled LP...let's just say that I don't quite understand how it didn't make a bigger impression back then. It is not hard to hear that Maurice had a grip on the EW&F concept right from this first album--all of the elements (no pun intended) are RIGHT HERE on this album. The opening track, "Help Somebody," is a perfect example. The lyrics are typical of the uplifting, socially conscious type that would always be present in their albums. Maurice's voice is instantly recognizable. There are great horn charts punctuating the tune. And as the old saying goes, it has a beat, and you can dance to it. Yes, it is a little more rough and raw, and the music ideas are a little more varied than they are on later recordings, but you can easily tell this is classic EW&F. A brilliant start to their long-running tenure as one of the leading R&B outfits to ever put tunes onto wax. This is definitely a must-buy, whether it's this well-mastered vinyl version, or the CD (if you can still find it).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2021It was the og version it even had the original poster of the group and in pretty fair condition i may add. For the years it has held up well. Not a lot of crackle and no warping. The album is classic. Thanks
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2020Was in good condition, and I was finally able to test it out today on a new record player. Sounds great, and was exactly what I was looking for and expected. Thank you
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2023It brought back a lot of memories
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2019The album was perfect. It even contained the original poster. I wanted it because my daughter is in the photo. She was only seven at the time. She’s in her 40’s now and our original album is gone
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2013I have to say that this is my absolute favorite album from them. There is not a single bad song! Each of the tracks are just so happy and full of life. It also sounds the best on vinyl.
I would recommend this album to anyone that has been in a bad mood lately, it will turn them around so quick, and have them bouncing for joy! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the only Earth, Wind & Fire best of you need
This three CD pack has every U.K. single issued by CBS and includes a couple of extended bonus 12” mixes of ‘Let’s Groove’ and ‘Boogie Wonderland’. It also has the best of the band’s album tracks so you get the full version of single ‘After The Love Has Gone’ with the saxophone ending segueing into ‘Let Your Feelings Show’ from the wonderful ‘79 album ‘I Am’ and the funky ‘Getaway’.
As with all the Crimson label Gold series you don’t get any liner notes, extra photos or fancy packaging. What you do get is the first ever proper comprehensive overview of Earth, Wind & Fire’s fantastic career in excellent sound quality with all tracks licensed from their original source now controlled by Sony music. At this price the CD is also great value for money and an absolute must buy.
