- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2023Joni teamed up with Charles Mingus along with other prolific musicians such as the legendary Jaco Pastorious and the great Herbie Hancock on keyboards. Joni uses many different techniques with her voice and her guitar: you can hear some intentionally buzzing notes to create tension and the lyricism just flows so greatly. Regardless of the humorous "Happy Birthday 1975" or "I's A Muggin' (which are short little raps in between 5 lengthy experimental tracks along with Joni's rendition of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, a tribute to the original by Charles Mingus. He would pass shortly before the album's release which may not have been very well received at the time, however. I think this has stood the test of time.. Other great tracks are the underrated "God Must Be A Boogie Man", "A Chair In The Sky", the amazing "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey" and "Sweet Sucker Dance", as well as the avant-funk "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines", and the sweet, swilling, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" which would close the album. This is Joni way ahead of her time.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2007Joni Mitchell had been labeled a "jazzer" after using session players Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorious, jazz musicians in their own right. However, jazz inflections were all to be heard on previous Mitchell releases, and then all the ones going forward. Only " Mingus" stands as a true jazz album. Mitchell was well suited to the genre.
Charles Mingus sent for Joni Mitchell; she didn't ask to be a part of his final recording. However, it's incredible for us that she agreed. It may take a bit of a stretch for fans of early work to reach the point of appreciation, but it's worth the effort. Much great jazz requires a little work on the part of the listener, but it's certainly rewarding.
" The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" pops! Joni scats here, drawing the color out of a bleak life. " God Must Be a Boogie Man" may need a little background knowledge of Charles Mingus, but once that is obtained, what a tribute! Personally, I like to think that God Himself is a boogie Man. The rythem of life suggests this is true.
The " raps" interspersed through the album are a bit distracting, but an understandable addition given the album's concept. Joni never did pure jazz before or since, but broaden your horizons and embrace the brief departure!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2014There is only so much time for listening to music in a given day. If you are like me, and have collected hundreds and hundreds of discs covering many different types of music, it can be a tough choice as to which one to put into the player.
This album is always in contention for playing time. I find that I tend it leave it in the player longer, and play it more often.
If you are strictly looking for a Mingus album, this obviously isn't for you. If you are looking for a mainstream Joni Mitchell album, this likely isn't your cup of tea. But if you want to hear Joni be creative in new and exciting ways, this is a winner. Her take on Mingus, both his work and his personality, are exciting and refreshing.
And if the Mingus/Mitchell combination isn't enough to make up your mind, the minimalist jazz arrangements feature the amazing work of Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock. Do yourself a favor and give this a listen.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2021The product is great. The delivery was not good as I was sent the wrong cd first.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023It's Joni, what can I say; have loved all her stuff throughout my adult life. She is music from the 70's and beyond. Holds up because she is such a poet, artist and inspiration.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2019This is the album that got me into Joni Mitchell. Back in 1978 or so I saw a piece on the WNBC evening news about her doing a project with Charlie Mingus who was dying of ALS. Didn't know much about either one but my curiosity was piqued. I bought the vinyl record and was floored. Jaco Pastorius, whom I would meet seven years later......unbelievable. Just an amazing project from an amazing artist. I understand that Joni's "fans" don't rate Mingus that highly. Screw 'em. I love this record.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2008You have to use words like that to describe this album... it really is weird, compared to mainstream music at least. Jaco Pastorius "sings" his fretless bass lines right back at Joni as she sings her vocal lines into the ethereal atmosphere... you can almost see the smoky underground cavern den where this kind of music would be gently nodded to by silent, astute, hip folks who are as far out there as Joni and Jaco....
If you know Joni and if you know Jaco... then you know exactly what you are going to get.... If you don't know them, then you are in for a shock and a surprise. Give it a try; it's hip, afterall.......

5.0 out of 5 stars Che dire? Meraviglioso
