Product description

STYX Cornerstone CD

Amazon.com

If Styx didn't do enough to endear itself to a generation of prom-goers with its 1975 slow-dance classic "Lady," they closed the deal a few years later with Cornerstone's premiere hit, "Babe." Perhaps the prototypical I-love-you-but-I-just-gotta-go power ballad, the song was Styx's first No. 1 hit, and it propelled the album to platinum-plus status. Led by that track as well as "Why Me," another Top 40 hit, Cornerstone is Styx at their most accessible and melodic. The album experiments with some new sounds as well, with horns added to the mix on Dennis DeYoung's "Borrowed Time" and "Why Me" and mandolin on Tommy Shaw's "Boat on the River." If their album sales didn't offer the final word on the band's popularity at the close of the '70s, a 1979 Gallup poll did the trick: The group was named America's most popular rock band. It's you babe, indeed. --Daniel Durchholz

This was a new CD and was received in excellent condition no damage. This is one of the highest rated selling CDs by the group Styx next to Paradise Theatre, which was their number one selling album. It was nice to add these back to my collection of music. 80's classic rock music.

I once had this album on LP, but gave it up years ago to consolidate space. This fits the bill perfectly. I know audiophiles may feel CDs are too tinny or not as rich, but I honestly don't notice a huge difference (age does that :-) ). If you like Styx and prefer a solid CD as a backup to just mp3 files, this is a great addition to your collection in a 'compact' way.

Conrnerstone meaning strength, so The Cornerstone of Cornerstone is clearly the ballads. Even without the ballads, several things stand out about this album. First, "Borrowed Time" and "Why Me" demonstrate that STYX is still in touch with its roots. Second, "Lights" and "Never say Never" show a new and interesting feel to the group's style. Third, "Eddie" is a fabulous rocker. Most of all, Tommy Shaw really showed why STYX brought him in with his unique and wonderful "Boat on the River". While not as good as Pieces of eight and Grand illusion , this overall is a very good album.

I have a bit of a soft spot for this album. In late 1979 I started working for a small Midwest radio station and this album came out the same week that I started. The very first song I ever played on the radio was the leadoff track from this album a Tommy Shaw tune called "Lights". I still like the song a lot to this day. Overall though "Cornerstone" was a mixed bag of an album. Dennis Deyong struck it big with his ballad "Babe" which would become a number 1 single. To many Styx fans (and to some of the Styx members) hitting it big with a sappy ballad was not their idea of what this band was all about. There are still a lot of good songs to be found here however and although a lot of Styx fans don't agree I like this one better than the previous album "Pieces Of Eight". Along with "Lights" other good songs include "Never Say Never", Tommy Shaw's acoustic ditty "Boat On The River", "Borrowed Time" , "Eddie", and "Love In The Midnight". Most of the band's progressive rock tendencies are missing on this album, but the songs are still there and most of them are good. All in all I rate this a good, but not great Styx album.

I have loved this album since it first was released. This album does however seem to mark the point Styx was mellowing and becoming more pop or radio oriented. That being said, it is still a fine album, but not rocking as prior albums. The 180 gram pressing was quite good. If you like Styx and want to hear them on great sounding vinyl then , buy this or some of the other releases, from "Friday Music" This company does a fine job with remastering classic albums.

Styx had a style which was similar to Supertramp, The Doobie Brothers & ELO. As those 3 said acts had released critically acclaimed albums in 1979, it was no surprise that Cornerstone was every bit as successful

4.0 out of 5 stars Pas le meilleur mais sympa quand même ...
Reviewed in France on August 3, 2015
