Editorial Reviews

A combination of two LPs--1982's Good News and 1989's We All...Everyone of Us--Breaths provides a passionate, rich, politically charged perspective on Sweet Honey's early work. The group shows their emotional range and intellectual convictions as clearly in this nascent work as in later releases. From the philosophical lullaby "Breaths" to the declarative civil-rights offering "Ella's Song," this album serves as a forum for these brave-voiced women to unfold their ideals and passions with wisdom and care. Aside from the powerful original compositions, Breaths contains a handful of tender, musically ripe arrangements of other people's poetry: June Jordan's "Oughta Be a Woman," Kahlil Gibran's "On Children," and Birago Diop's title track. Each illustrates the group's ability to draw music out of words as well as set words to music. --Sally Weinbach

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2020I heard a great song on an online fundraiser and thought it was probably Sweet Honey in the Rock. Loved them years ago and this 1988 CD felt so relevant today. I love it and will probably get more by them. So moving and powerful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2021This is their iconic album. A joy to listen to it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2013I pondered my next Sweet Honey in the Rock purchase for over a year and decided on this release. I am so glad I purchased this. I only have their 25th anniversary release and this was such a complement to that one. The songs and stylings are so similar and I can play both of these when I need some female lifting.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2018Old favorite of mine. Glad to have it back.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2013An album of beautiful, moving songs by a group of women who reflect strength, grace, harmony and commitment. The power of their performances is manifest.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2005This album is magnificent! The music is original, spirited, warm, and reaches to your very soul. Each piece has it's own personality. I heard these women on PBS, and have bought two of their cd's. I will soon purchase more! Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, powerful a capella singing.
This is some of the most beautiful, powerful a capella singing I have ever heard. I once owned it on vinyl and was pleased to find it on cd. I found myself musing that many of Bernice Jonnson Reagon's powerful songs are as relevant today as when they were written in the 70's. However even if you only buy this cd for the knock your socks off version of "By the waters of Babylon" this mixture of live and recorded tracks is still an absolute bargain which I highly recommend.
