- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2017When I first learned my kids had severe (anaphylactic) food allergies, I thought that the only option was to completely re-think our lives in order to keep them safe. There could be no more birthday parties for my severely milk-allergic toddler (frosting gets absolutely everywhere at toddler birthday parties), and instead of enrolling him in the preschool of my choice, I would have to look for one that had the strictest food allergy policies.
It was only by chance that I stumbled upon another parent, who mentioned in passing that her daughter was being treated for her severe allergies by Dr. Xiu Min Li. Dr. Li's work, while developed from traditional Chinese medicine, is grounded in western science, with double blind, placebo controlled, peer-reviewed studies to back up her research. And amazingly, she offers this treatment to the public through her private practice in New York.
My kids have now been in treatment with Dr. Li for almost two years, and both have made incredible progress. We combined Dr. Li's treatment with other treatments available (such as oral immunotherapy and sub-lingual immunotherapy), but this is not required - many people have seen tremendous progress with Dr. Li's treatment alone. My 6-year-old daughter can now free eat all of her allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, buckwheat, and fish), and my 3 year old has introduced many of his allergens into his diet, including milk, peanuts, almonds, green peas, and more. He had pizza and store-bought cake at his own 3rd birthday party, and is now enrolled in a preschool that I picked for its curriculum and the quality of the teaching, not for its food allergy policy. This was unthinkable prior to treatment.
In this book, Henry Ehrlich and Dr. Li explain the mechanisms for Dr. Li's groundbreaking treatment. It is a technical book, but useful also for those who may not follow the details of the science. The book covers Dr. Li's food allergy treatment, but also her treatments for asthma, eczema, IBD, and MCAD. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2016Great resource and en eye-opening book for anyone battling food allergies. The science behind it is very important. The book is great in terms of bringing the real life examples of children with various severity of food allergies with the science behind the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) together and the way TCM is helping save lives but also improving quality of life. I will be re-reading certain sections and I feel that this holistic approach to treating the immune system is very important and has a huge place in the allergy world. Great and easy read and a fantastic scientific book! I will be using it all the time as a primer for TCM and for understanding how TCM works. The book is a must read for anyone considering TCM for food allergies or asthma with dr. Li! Kudos to all the amazing work she is doing to help children with food allergies, asthma, or other immune disorders. She really cares for her patients. The Q&A at the end of the book is extremely helpful as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2017This is a fabulous book for providers (and patients looking for answers) who are trying to help people suffering with severe allergic diseases. It provides fantastic information on research that can really help people with anaphylactic food allergies, severe asthma, debilitating eczema and mastocytosis based on Chinese herbal remedies that are promising to be a great alternative to drugs with serious side effects, such as corticosteroids. A background in science is helpful in understanding the material, but anybody who is seriously looking for alternative treatments that work for severe allergic diseases for which western medicine often has no answers, this book is a must. People living with the dread of anaphylaxic reactions to foods finally can have hope to overcome this illness, and severe asthmatics and eczema patients can equally hope for tremendous improvement using Dr. Li's protocols. As a practitioner of Chinese medicine (and with sever asthma) I highly recommend this book and commend and thank Dr. Xiu-Min Li for her excellent work.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016An excellent, and in my opinion, essential book for anyone with allergic disease. I am also purchasing this book for my medical specialists. This book describes in detail both the biochemistry behind allergic disease and the biochemistry of immunologist Dr. Li's work integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western scientific understanding. Her work stands apart because she has been studying specific biochemical and immunological processes involved in allergic disease and matching it up with the herbal constituents that she knows offer the countering biochemistry. Dr. Li's protocols offer a desired alternative to the mainstream Western medical approaches that have too often fallen short and simply suppress symptoms vs. getting at the root of allergic disease. I myself am on one of her formulas (ASHMI). It is keeping me out of the hospital and allowing me to taper safely off the harmful steroids. There IS hope for non-steroidal treatment in allergic disease, and a cure!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2017This book covers an interesting topic - the bridging of Eastern and Western science - and describes the many areas where Dr. Xiu-Min Li's research can be applied. It's a fascinating look into the inner scientific workings of her research, including case studies that reflect the real-world impacts of her work. The science might be intense, for some, but for the medically and scientifically curious among us, we can never get enough! Henry Ehrlich's writing style lends itself to easier reading of detail-dense material, and can certainly overcome any scientific-knowledge shortcomings. It isn't often that we get a glimpse into the future, so take this opportunity to see what could be coming down the pike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Li saved my son's life!
I read both Dr. Li's books as an introducion into our now, daily life.
My son's skin was infected literally from head to toe for a very long time. You can only imagine our life at that time! He was at a high risk of systemic infection and many other things. This book was a window to a whole new world of medicine, a real medicine! After seeing many many doctors on two different continents, we discovered that Dr. Li is a true healer! The moment we had put our hands on her protocol, we started living. My hope finally returned after very long year and a half. Today, my son is 2.5 years old, on TCM protocol for 9 months and he is living his life almost the same as every other toddler. His skin healed after 3-6 months into prorocol and we are continuing as long as we have to until we hopefully reduce the severity of his food allergies.
The biggest thank you to Dr. Li!
