A new and updated edition of the essential activities book for learning to read the news in Arabic

In light of the rapidly growing number of people studying Arabic—in academia, governments, NGOs, and business—Media Arabic is a unique and timely learning tool for anyone looking to access news information from this important global region firsthand. Media Arabic introduces the language of the newspapers, magazines, and internet news sites to intermediate and advanced level students of Modern Standard Arabic. Using this textbook, students will be able to master core vocabulary and structures typical of front-page news, recognize various modes of coverage, distinguish fact from opinion, detect bias, and read critically in Arabic.

Drawing on their long experience as Arabic instructors, Alaa Elgibali and Nevenka Korica have organized the book into six chapters, each covering a dominant news topic: Talks and Conferences, Demonstrations and Protests, Conflicts and Terrorism, Elections, Rule of Law, and Business. In addition, the book offers three self-assessment units and a glossary organized by theme.

The book enables students to read extended texts with greater accuracy and speed by focusing on the relationships among meaning, language form, and markers of cohesive discourse. The activities include pre-reading discussions as well as extensive practice on vocabulary in context, organizing information, skimming, scanning, critical reading, and analyzing content.

Modern standard arabic basically is media arabic, i.e. the arabic that is recognizable to the entire arabic speaking world. There are 20 other dialects spoken around the region. This book should be canon in TAFL (teaching arabic as a foreign language).

This is a perfect little book about news in Arabic! I'm satisfied with the presentation and the content. The book is light what is perfect to travel and to read in the subway. Authors made a good selection of current topics in news. If I had to mention something I do not like about it, it would be with no doubts almost all news are not good; I mean, now we are in the middle of a global pandemic, I would like to read something about science, research technology, even sports. But I understand this was not the focus of the book. For some people also, font Arabic size should appears a little tiny, but I think this is the size of a real Arabic book.
الآن استطيع أن افهم على الأقل معظم العناوين في الجرائد!

My husband is actually studying Modern standard Arabic. Which is typically used in the media. I think this is a great tool to have for anyone who needs to become familiar with media Arabic.

I'd used the previous version of this while preapring for my DLPT. I highly recommend it for the amount of vocabulary and usage examples. Some exploration of idiomatic usage in media would have made the book even better.

I've been using this book in class for a few months and have grown to like it but I certainly feel the flaws in it.

First off I really like how it moves from easy and straightforward stories on a topic (there was an election here, this is what happened) to more complex stories with opinions and more background and how each article reinforces vocabulary from earlier ones. In that way it is a very well planned out book with strong scaffolding to raise the students' confidence and ability.

However, as others have pointed out the print is tiny, I may not have noticed it when I was a college student but my old eyes need a lot of squinting to read it. The book also uses a stylized font that compresses letters and is hard to read. Which is realistic and authentic but also annoying. I would recommend using different fonts from time to time as well since newspapers use a variety of fonts in their articles.

Exercises often don't have enough room to write the answers and articles do not have enough white space between the lines to scribble notes and translations. New vocabulary is sometimes insufficiently explained.

I would say this is a very well planned book but needs a new edition to improve the layout and review some of the explanations. Perhaps move to a larger A4 trim size to give students more space to work with. Overall it's the best intermediate book I've used but there's significant room for improvement.

Helpful to have in your Arabic comprehension book collection.

The main problem with this book is that there is no answer key. Also, although it has vocabulary lists, some words are repeated while others are omitted entirely. There are also frequent typos. Otherwise, it covers current and relevant topics.

Das Buch ist ein Muss für die, die es brauchen. Die Wortphrasen sind sonst kaum erfindbar.

Der Zwang einer Mindestanzahl von Worten oder Zeichen bei Kritik oder Lob ist nicht sehr kundenfreundlich und man könnte sich den Satz hier sparen!.
