About the author

INTRODUCTION
Benedicte Mai Lerche is a biochemist with an MSc and PhD.
BENEDICTE'S STRUGGLE WITH HYPOTHYROIDISM
In her early twenties, Benedicte experienced severe hypothyroid symptoms, including chronic fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, digestive problems, allergies, PCOS, and more. Despite these numerous symptoms, her hypothyroidism was overlooked for a long time. When she finally received the diagnosis, finding the right treatment proved challenging.
DISCOVERING DR. RAY PEAT:
The turning point in Benedicte's health journey came when she connected with thyroid expert Dr. Ray Peat. His innovative approach and groundbreaking insights into metabolism and hormones played a crucial role in her transformation from battling debilitating hypothyroid symptoms to achieving vibrant health.
LEARNING FROM DR. RAY PEAT:
Dr. Peat taught Benedicte how to correctly interpret her thyroid lab results and how to monitor her metabolism at home using pulse and temperature. He also guided her in following his pro-metabolic diet and using her thyroid medication properly. His insights into natural hormone supplementation, particularly progesterone and pregnenolone, were invaluable to her recovery.
HELPING OTHERS HEAL:
Unfortunately, Benedicte's experience is not unique. Many people face similar health challenges, desperately searching for explanations and solutions to their symptoms. Often, they don’t realize that their diverse symptoms are linked to an underactive thyroid. Benedicte's mission is to help others recover their health using Dr. Ray Peat’s groundbreaking insights.
BOOK SERIES: HEALING METABOLISM
Benedicte's book series is designed to be a step-by-step guide for people who are looking to revitalize their metabolism, enhance thyroid function, balance hormones, lose weight, improve sleep, and restore their energy.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2025Benedicte Mai Lerche has an unpronounceable name for this American, but she does a GREAT job clarifying the work of Ray Peat, PhD. Get all 3 of her books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2025I have had issues with my thyroid being sluggish for decades. I took medications but I never felt good on them and then I actually came to where I couldn't tolerate anything anymore. I had to find a different way. While I am in no way cured, I am trying to work on my health in general so have been using this series of books to help me look at my health journey in a different way.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2023Now that Ray is gone, it is important to have recorded experiences of following his work in his time. Anecdotes also have great value in recording how his thoughts needed time to evolve over time. Here Dr Lerche reflects in a summary context, her conversations with Ray from the perspective of her hypothyroidism and her actions in a general sense to overcome the condition.
For our 17 year old dog, I've had some success which maybe attributed to his carrot diet idea. Its taken about 2 months to see some subtle improvements. Every afternoon, chop and cook a carrot with a little vegemite with butter and water in a microwave, add baby peas for a further 2 minutes, and then add chopped bbq cooked red and white meats. The dog is always seriously ready for this by 4pm. Her stools are also improved and bulked up. Her eyes are brighter. You can see in this little summary that there are quite a few of the ideas of Dr Peat and Dr Lerche here too.
As a scientist, I would welcome a supplementary data appendix being added with timeline and data even if it is at the level of, " this happened in year x, then after not much progress around the time of year y this happened and now I am at year z and this is my basal temperature.".
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2023I’ve been following Dr. Peat for years and appreciate that Benedicte has made his work and research available to help others achieve optimal health. This is valuable information for overcoming hypothyroidism but also for anyone interested in increasing metabolism and becoming healthier in general. I’ve been reading her e-learning materials too and look forward to her next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2024I have read many books on nutrition and hypothyroidism in particular. I wanted to read more about Ray Pete, and thought I would give this book a try. Unfortunately, it is just a teaser. She’ll bring up a subject, not really explain the complete steps, and let you know that you should read her next book in order to get the details. For instance, she let you know that you should monitor your body temperature to see how your thyroid is working, but she doesn’t specifically mention where your temperature should be prior to eating breakfast and after eating breakfast. She just says that you should read her next book. This is just one example and she does this multiple times throughout the book. When she mentions vitamins, diet, light therapy, etc.

Book is over priced
Author shows source for a statement but ZERO details!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2023The knowledge Benedicte shared in this book has been crucial for me treating and healing my own thyroid and chronic sinusitis. I appreciate how clear and concisely she conveys the information, it's not a bunch of fluff or word salad, it's all to the point and doesn't waste my time! I've recommended it to several people already. Must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2023I’m very familiar with Ray Peat’s nutritional ideas and have incorporated many of them in healing my hypothyroidism. This book gives basic easy to follow information on how to heal. It’s a process and with gradual lifestyle changes you can heal your hypothyroidism and other things as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent on Ray peat and thyroid
This is a very good introduction. I am very interested in thyroid issues as they relate to a whole host of other matters, such as stress, and I think Ray Peat was a genius about these and other matters, and this book does a great job bringing the 2 together. Easy to understand. Recommended

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacks substance
I am familiar with Dr Peats work, I bought this to learn more about the thyroid aspect. This book is very basic and offers nothing of any substance. There is no step by step guides, just a few words about the subject. Some of the pages have just a paragraph of text. Disappointed in this book.
