About the Author

This is a Spanish translation from the original Catalan. I am reading it to improve my facility. Nonetheless there also are good English translations (The Time of the Doves) which are well worth the effort. This is the story of a young Catalan woman living through the Spanish Civil War. It is equally relevant today--the action and hardships could as easily have taken place now in Syria,, Lebanon, or Afghanistan.
The narrator's voice is authentic. The narrative begins slowly and almost gently and accelerates to a crescendo of horrors (similar in pacing to Aharon Applefeld). In so doing it moves from simple description to greater poetry. It reminds me also of Goya's Desastres de la Guerra.
This is one of the great and unappreciated works from the Spanish posguerra period.

In 2008 I visited La Plaza del Diamante in Barcelona Spain, the setting for the novel of the same name by Mercé Rodoreda ("Time of the Doves" in English). I had previously read the Spanish version in a university class, and vowed to locate the Plaza. Once there (I stopped at a book store along the way and bought another copy), I discovered a very unusual, unsigned sculpture of the literary character, Natalia, from the book. While it seemed new and fresh to me, it had probably been there at least 20 years. No one I talked to seemed to know who she was. The doves in the sculpture gave it away, with a young girl breaking through a barrier of some sort. An old man on a park bench in the main city plaza told me how to get there, a 20 minute walk off of Via de Gracia. It's on the city map. A book and a place you will never forget!

I challenge readers not to pause, think, at a certain point in this book.

What would you do? Would you wonder how you got to that point?

Would you look at yourself before making a very . . . no spoilers.

Usually the "good" condition books that I get have highlights, are old, maybe some water damage but this is the first time that "good" condition means 17 pages missing at the top of everything.

I heard Elena Poniatowska recommend this book in a lecture. She described it is a "brilliant book about the Spanish civil war that never mentions the Spanish civil war."

I would prefer a book with larger print. When looking on Amazon for other books I have searched for a choice in print size, to no avail. There is no way of knowing the size of the print. I do not necessarily need a large print book - just not so small. Something that would be more comfortable to read. There does not appear to be a kindle version to enlarge the print. However this book was specified for a language class and a paper book is better for that purpose.
The service from the seller was excellent.
