- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2016I am a Thai and a born Theravada Buddhist. I know other Pali grammar books but they are utterly dry and are not designed to develop a learner's reading skill in the Holy Text of Tipitaka. Pali-grammar books in Thailand are designed for monks or very serious laymen; and they are too old-school, overly scholarly in terms of grammatical details. Students are expected to develop their reading faculty elsewhere, such as in prayer books - which are difficult, because they assume a mastery of the grammar. So "A New Course in Reading Pali" is, in my opinion, the best Pali textbook for a complete beginner. However, there are still complaints that this is not actually for beginners. I must say I disagree with such criticism.
Pali, like Sanskrit, is a classical Indo-European language. To study Pali, it would be very helpful if you already know either Latin or Ancient Greek, so you'd know what to expect. As for me, I speak Thai. And the Thai language, over many centuries, has assimilated thousands of Pali words into it. So I got thrilled to discover so many etymological roots of words I use everyday; guessing them is such a fun and epiphany experience (this is gonna improve my Thai). Anyway if you have already studied Buddhism for some time, have memorized some prayers in Pali (like most cultural Buddhists), - in short if Pali expressions are not entirely alien to you - you will have fun learning and guessing from this book too. Furthermore, as I said earlier, knowing Latin or Greek helps with the grammar. I know a bit ancient Greek (and can read Homer in the original) and I know it helps a great deal with the structure of conjugation. Pali is such an ancient language that there are even more forms to conjugate compared to Greek. So yeah if you remember your Latin grammar, it can really help. But in my opinion, this book is just about right in the information it tries to give you and to enable you to read Pali.
Overall, a really enjoyable and manageable learning experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024I really enjoyed the Pali selections which were used to assist in the teaching. Buddhist writings go from very basic to extreme complexity, a feature which the book utilizes, nicely, to grow the learner in step by step growth.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2020The book content is good but I have to return the book. I just can not read it, small text, no place to make my own note, A5 format (half size of a normal statement letter we usually receive from the bank a.s.o...)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2021There is a free audio lecture series available online of Bhikkhu Bodhi (The preeminent Pali-English translator in the world) going through this book chapter by chapter, line by line. He slowly pronounces every single word and phrase, and offers many alternative translations that he prefers of the ones in the text. I recommend doing the translations on your own, then listening to the lecture with your work and book.
I am just about finished with chapter 1. It may not sound like much, but probably represents 40 hours or so hard work(actively memorizing etc) . The selections are very enjoyable. I love their approach of selecting repetitive readings; it really drills things in (I highly recommend actually writing them all out).
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2015I think it's not a good manual for begginers, but it's fit to them, which learn classical languages and are used to read for learning (like ancient egyptian, sanskrit, greek etc.). Of course that pali contains most of difficults we find in some languages: declinations, complex verbal conjugations, a lot of particles and so on. But this book measures these difficulties in a gradual way of learning. At same time we can increase the knowledge of pali and learn more about the theravada tradition of buddhism. It is worth !
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2024I ordered this book for my upcoming class, received today and quite disappointed by the fact that I ordered hardcover, but it is NOT. What really bothers me is that the font is so small and no line space either. Need to see if there is any other edition that is more readable.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2019Love book, however the paperback cover was cut terribly, so it's crooked. Good thing I don't want to sell it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2011This is a great textbook to learn Pali with. All of the grammar explanations are concise and yet clear. The reading sections are long enough to enjoy, and follow the grammar and vocabulary of the lessons very well. There is plenty of vocabulary introduced in each lesson. There's a lot packed into this small book.
As far as the one reviewer's complaint with missing words, I've yet to find a word that isn't in the vocabularies or glossary.
I think this is an very needed addition to Pali studies. This book will give you a great start in this important language of Buddhism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have done the lesson 1 already and I recoomend it to poeple wanting to learn pali using Buddha's words rather then abstract sentences.
This book is complemented by Bikkhu Bodhi's lectures available online, where he explains the sentences in the book in more detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful.
While I lacked the incentive to study the whole book, the initial chapters I learned were very easy to follow & learn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, great service from the seller.
The book is very useful if one wants to learn how to read Pali texts. It supplies basic and progressive information with many examples. The explanation of the examples are not very detailed, but I find this useful, as you have to make your own reasonings and discoveries to penetrate the complexity and exceptions of grammar rules, as well to develop that "intuition" which comes from experience. At the same time, you're never left completely clueless.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Product. Very highly Recommended
An Amazing product.
This book combined with Bhikkhu Bodhi's 12 audio lessons will go a long way in improving your Pāli skills.
On it's own as well it's a terrific effort on part of its authors.
Very highly recommended.
