From the Inside Out: Harrowing Escapes from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center Paperback – July 3, 2018

4.7 out of 5 stars 1,185 ratings

Erik Ronningen was on the 71st floor of the North Tower on September 11, 2001 when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building. After an incredible, near miraculous journey down through the acrid, smoke-filled building, Erik tried to get to the Security Command Center in the South Tower. Unable to do so, he was the last person to make it out of the South Tower alive. Here is the story of his harrowing escape interwoven with the accounts of fourteen others who were lucky enough to be able to recount them.Altogether, these accounts document the bravery and heroism, selflessness and generosity demonstrated by hundreds of people when their normal everyday lives were suddenly plunged into a fiery scramble for survival. The astonishing photograph on the cover of this book was taken by survivor Jim Usher as he lay on the concrete outside the WTC losing consciousness, so his family could see what he saw during what he thought were the last moments of his life. And yes, that flag was really there! This photograph has never before been made public.

This is such an interesting story, an incredible, near miraculous journey of the last person to make it out of the South Tower alive on September 11. The bravery and heroism of hundreds of people plugged into darkness, scrambling for their lives amid the chaos and harrowing escape. I have to keep reminding myself that this really happened. This is a story that belongs on the priority list of books in the Pantheon of history. I have to keep reminding myself that this really happened.

From the Inside Out is a collection of stories of people, including the author, who were at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and survived the events of the day. Many of the stories are from people who have not had their stories told in other books or documentaries about 9/11. The book is relatively short, just over 150 pages, and tells each person's story basically from the time they got up that day, to when they finally got home.

Some interesting takeaways I had was that, while many people inside the tower did not have any idea what happened, there were definitely some who knew (or highly suspected) what did, and those who were engineers were definitely afraid that the buildings might fall. One of the people included in the book was probably one of the few people who were not killed who actually saw American 11 coming toward the building. In fact, the plane was initially at his eye level before it climbed a bit just before crashing he ended up being below the impact zone and was able to get out. But he was close enough to see the silhouettes of people in the plane before it hit. One of the saddest stories is that of a Port Authority Officer who worked with a K9 unit to detect bombs and thought that he had missed a bomb and ended up in the only portion of the stairwell in the north tower that survived the collapse. His K9 partner was in the basement of the south tower when it collapsed in his kennel and given full honors when his remains were discovered months later. Probably the hardest thing to reading the accounts of the survivors seeing people falling and jumping from the building and just how bloody it was around the towers.

Those of us who lived through that day will always remember it, but this book really hammers home the fact that those of us who were watching on TV from the safety of an office or living room knew what it was really like in the middle of everything. Interestingly, however, more than one of the people whose story is told in the book did not realize how bad what they survived was until they got home and watched the news footage. I definitely put this book int he category of a must-read.

I would recommend this book to anyone that is too young to fully remember the victims of 9/11 (the survivors AND the ones who didn't make it), and want to hear the harrowing stories of a number of folks who lived through the terrorist attacks. This book will help to remind you of the courage, bravery, and mental fortitude that was on full display that day.
I didn't think that I would be a huge fan of the many different mini stories from a number of people that were there that day, and the way that each person's experience was kind of written in a back and forth style, from one story to the another. I quickly got used to the authors style of wiring, though I ultimately found this book to be an excellent short read. Recommended!

Not a glamorous newscast onslaught of thoughtless questions, but a solid account of personal struggles. I would recommend reading this, long after 9/11/2001.

Like the book and movie “Unbroken”, about the plight of American pilot Louis Zamperini in WWII, this book by Erik O. Ronningen reveals the hidden strength that the human mind, body and spirit can endure when faced with insurmountable odds. Anybody facing life problems can take strength and will power from reading the true accounts of the valiant contributors whose lives were altered forever on that unforeseeable tragedy the morning of the 9th September 2001.

Simply put, it took a lot to get the book finished, reliving in detail the unthinkable horrors endured, but it should be acknowledged as a huge self help for readers facing problems with their lives.

YOU CAN WALK THROUGH HELL AND COME OUT INTO THE LIGHT.

This book tells the incredible stories of over a dozen workers describing their harrowing experiences escaping the doomed towers of the WTC on September 11th, 2001. Though about 6 hours away from the area myself, like most others I remember where I was that morning when I heard the news. I remember being thankful I was not near there while feeling incredible sadness for those that WERE there and had to fight to survive. The people in this book and also the author, are just that, survivors!
Well written, detailed accounting of these folks who got up and went to work one seemingly ordinary beautiful day and ended up living a nightmare. We will never forget!

It was good to read what happened to some of the survivors of the Twin Towers and hear their harrowing stories of what they witnessed and how they escaped. I did not think it was great writing or a masterpiece as so many were raving about, but many stories were quite horrific experiences to go through, and it reminds you how fragile life is. Good book.

A book about 911 I'd been looking for for years. The stories just keep coming and little things they say give fuel for thought of what really happened on that fateful September morning back in 2001.
If your a newby to facts on this event this could be quite shocking but if like me youv'e read and seen much about it and have a deep interest in what it was all about, this is an integral part of your reading matter and quite a learning curve.
Absolutely excellent, could not put it down. Its now gonna be hard to find something as informative and interesting on the subject to top it.My heart goes out to all of these people who put their experiences of the WTC collapses in this book and also all those who also lived to tell the tale elsewhere.
We should hope that no other selfish, greedy governments ever pull off one of these events on their people again!

September 11th will always be the day THAT tragedy happened. This book brings you directly inside the offices, elevators, and stairwells of the Twin Towers.

Given the many books I've read about the events of this tragic day I was expecting another I was here story. How wrong I was. From start to finish it's a roller coaster ride of emotions. You get the full horror and confusion of the events laid before you. The book was literally one I had to read again straight away to fully take it all in. Thank you Mr Ronningen for sharing this outstanding work with us.
