About the Author

Javier Marías nació en Madrid en 1951. Ha publicado quince novelas, entre las que se encuentran Los enamoramientos y Así empieza lo malo, así como tres colecciones de cuentos y varios volúmenes de ensayos. Sus obras han sido traducidas a cuarenta y cuatro lenguas y ha sido galardonado con innumerables premios literarios internacionales, incluído el IMPAC Dublin Literary Award por Corazón tan blanco. Es también un experto traductor del inglés de autores como Joseph Conrad, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Thomas Browne y Lawrence Stern. Ha sido profesor en España, en Estados Unidos y en Gran Bretaña, donde fue profesor visitante de Literatura española en la Universidad de Oxford.

Javier Marías is an award-winning Spanish novelist. He is also a translator and columnist, as well as the current king of Redonda. He was born in Madrid in 1951 and published his first novel at the age of nineteen. He has held academic posts in Spain, the US (he was a visiting professor at Wellesley College) and Britain, as a lecturer in Spanish Literature at Oxford University. He has been translated into 34 languages, and more than six million copies of his books have been sold worldwide. In 1997 he won the Nelly Sachs Award; the Comunidad de Madrid award in 1998; in 2000 the Grinzane Cavour Award, the Alberto Moravia Prize, and the Dublin IMPAC Award. He also won the Spanish National Translation Award in 1979 for his translation of Tristram Shandy in 1979. He was a professor at Oxford University and the Complutense of Madrid. He currently lives in Madrid.

    I have really enjoyed many books by this author, but this one is truly outstanding. His use of the Spanish language is so elegant and informative. This novel contains a stunning surprise for the reader (not to mention for the character!) My level of comprehension of Spanish is not so great that I can get through a whole novel without recourse to an English translation here and there.. so I borrow an English version from the library to have at hand. Nonetheless the original Spanish is substantially better.

    Este libro tiene una historia interesante y un desarrollo muy bueno. Sin embargo siento que el autor divaga y se extiende en su filosofía un poco más de la cuenta. Tiene sus altos y sus bajos. En general, diría que me gustó mucho y que no la olvidaré tan fácilmente por su excelente redacción y su perspectiva única del espionaje y sus consecuencias.

    Berta Isla es una mujer que desde joven se enamora y escoge a la persona con la que decide pasar el resto de su vida. Este es Thomas Nevison, mitad inglés, mitad español que es reclutado para ser espía para el gobierno Ingles. La relación entre ellos, con sus hijos, sus padres y el resto del mundo se nubla por acciones que no pueden relatarse y por consecuencia dudas y resentimientos, ligados por ese amor y fidelidad hasta la edad madura.

    Historia compleja y que hace reflexionar. Muy bien lograda.

    He leído algunos libros de este autor y este me continúa buena parte del transcurso de la trama ir metiendome en ella ,acostumbrarme de nuevo a su lenguaje,tal vez me cansa su uso a veces exagerado de sinónimos,para algunas puede encontrar hasta siete,eso revela un vocabulario amplísimo del que hace gala repetidas veces.También la ambigüedad de algunos hechos:son y no son,están pero no están,sucedieron o no.Un autor muy inteligente por supuesto,que no facilita su lectura pero finalmente compensa el esfuerzo de leerlo,va atrapando al lector en mi caso. poco a poco y llega un momento en que no lo solté hasta terminarlo,deja un pequeño sabor amargo,tal vez como la vida misma,nada es tan bueno o tan malo y los náufragos de esta historia se aferran a la esperanza de que rescataran algo de sus vidas tan complejas,eso hace que además valga la pena para que uno como lector no quede sumido en la amargura,de que piense que todo sacrificio valió la pena .Estamos vivos y eso importa para ellos en la ficción y para nosotros también.

    Excellent addition to Javier Marias' oeuvre. Everything one expects: Oxford, spies, secrets, long, tense, lovingly described scenes pregnant with menace. And something one doesn't expect: a principal female character, the wife of a reluctant spy.

    A few issues: About 2/3 of the book is first-person narrative by the title character, but the other third is omniscient third-person narrative that switches points-of-view. They don't alternate much; there are hundreds of pages of one then hundreds of pages of the other. That's not entirely successful. The main character sometimes feels like a male fantasy. She is decidedly un-liberated, which may be appropriate to her generation (born in the early 50s in Madrid), but sometimes rings not true. And there's a plot twist so glaringly obvious from the outset it hardly qualifies as a twist. It's more like waiting for the gun hung ostentatiously over the mantel in Act I to be discharged later in the play.

    This won't replace Tu Rostro Manana as the centerpiece of Marias' career, but it's enjoyable and thought-provoking nonetheless.

    A finales de año escuché en una emisora una tertulia entre críticos literarios. Opinaban sobre cuáles para ellos habían sido los mejores libros escritos a lo largo del año en habla hispana. En cuanto escuché nombrar a su autor me quedé con el título: “Berta Isla”.
    Probablemente porque conocía ya algo de la obra de Javier Marías tuve la seguridad de que me gustaría también, así que decidí comprarlo para disfrutarlo.
    Javier Marías conoce muy bien al ser humano, lo que le conmueve, lo que le remueve, sabe de sus complicadas relaciones.
    Tiene mucha imaginación cuando crea y recrea una historia. Qué magistralmente define, cómo hila, qué riqueza de ideas, de expresiones, de reflexiones, de citas … es un premio leerle, es muy gratificante, es más que un entretenimiento. Para releer más de una frase y de un párrafo por su abundante contenido.
    Como cualquier novela, esta, teje una historia y lo que hace Marías, y que creo que marca su estilo, su tónica, es centrarla en la complejidad del "yo" (es lo más íntimo, lo más interno de uno) consigo mismo y con respecto "al otro". Son historias con mucho fondo, las dota de mucho peso.
    Al margen de los hechos, de lo que acontece a los protagonistas de esta historia (que no creo que sea lo más a tener en cuenta), que es el discurrir de unos años que van desde la juventud hasta la madurez de una pareja en la que ella no lo sabe todo de él, no lo puede saber y debe elegir qué hacer ante esto, qué decisión tomar, se pregunta muchas cosas, al igual que él, y esto, diría que es realmente la esencia del libro, lo que hace deliciosa su lectura. Lo que más me ha provocado y seducido son la infinitud de reflexiones que se hacen ambos, y que claramente cualquier lector puede trasladar a su propia historia, a su vida personal, porque todos tenemos una. Nadie puede vivir nuestra historia como si fuera nosotros mismos. El lugar donde naces, la familia que te toca, sus tradiciones, costumbres, el entorno, … todo influye, pero si hablamos de sentimientos, de actitudes, en este mundo “del corazón” no hay barreras porque este es intrínseco al ser humano, este es universal, y cuando habla sobre ellos, cualquiera puede entender a qué se refiere..
    Los actos que uno realiza cada día, cualquier decisión que toma por banal que sea puede llegar a tener un alcance inimaginable, puede cambiar toda su historia de vida (es el motor de la historia) y con ello afectar a quienes le rodean. Al final, cada uno es dueño de sus secretos, está sólo consigo.
    Con la situación del relato en tiempo contemporáneo, con el desarrollo de una historia intrigante, con la búsqueda de respuestas a actitudes inexplicables. Con absoluto dominio del lenguaje, utilizando una curiosa estructura de forma, presentando diálogos e intercalándolos con el narrador en el mismo párrafo, con conocimiento del idioma, con abundancia de citas en inglés (qué pena desconocer esta lengua), con riqueza de calificativos, de sinónimos, con profusión de verbos, Javier Marías atrapa al lector hasta el final del libro.
    Profundiza en el yo de ella y en el yo de él, cada uno de ellos como primera y como tercera persona. Relata las vicisitudes por las que atraviesan, las decisiones más o menos acertadas que toman, sus respuestas, y sobre todo y lo que más me ha gustado, sus profundas reflexiones, porque, por lo menos a mí, me ha conducido a hacérmelas
    Del último poema "Little Gidding", de Thomas Stearns Eliot publicado en 1942, estos dos versos, aunque cita muchos más:
    -“lo que llamamos principio a menudo es el fin”
    -“Porque las palabras del año pasado pertenecen al lenguaje del año pasado y las palabras del año que viene esperan una voz distinta”

    Berta Isla è il 15 romanzo di Marìas. I primi 14 sono, stupendi, questo ancor di più. Forse perché lo sto leggendo in lingua originale per cui si riescono a cogliere tutte le sfumature della sua scrittura, tanto libera quanto raffinata, ricercata, rara nelle singoli espressioni, parole, aggettivi , così come nelle frasi lunghissime, che non finiscono mai e che il lettore vuole che non finiscano mai. Marias riesce a imprimere in chi legge una sintonia pressoché totale con il suo modo di raccontare. e non ci si può fermare, non si può non desiderare che i suoi incisi, le sue parentesi, le sue soste o deviazioni dall'argomento da cui è partito, continuino e continuino per tutto il tempo che lui ha stabilito, perché è un tempo necessitato. Le sue storie, che potrebbero sembrare a una lettura veloce frutto di tanti grovigli -e si può fare una lettura veloce, perché la sua prosa è talmente prensile, che è difficile rallentare- in realtà ne raccontano una soltanto, la più difficile: quella della nostra vita, sentimenti, emozioni, malvagità, nevrosi, sogni o misteri che attraversano la quotidianità e forse l'essenza di ognuno di noi. Anche loro compagni di viaggio, come i protagonisti di tutti i suoi romanzi.
    In Berta Isla c'è anche di più, ci sono ritorni anche alla sua prima maniera di narrare e a personaggi o situazioni che abbiamo incontrato altre volte nei suoi romanzi, una sorta di palinsesto, le cui stratificazioni tuttavia sono mutevoli, mai stabili. Così come mutano nel tempo e nello spazio le vite di tutti noi e non sapremo mai cosa ci aspetta domani, consapevoli come siamo quasi soltanto del nostro essere hic et nunc.
    Un romanzo geniale, dunque, che consiglio a tutti coloro che hanno voglia di misurarsi con se stessi senza paura di rivelarsi, né a sé né agli altri.

    Javier Marias ist wie immer Meister im kreieren von Charakteren uns sie einem nahe zu bringen. Auch in diesem Roman, der von der ersten Seite an fesselt, leidet man mit Berta und ist gespannt auf den Ausgang der Geschichte. Fabelhaft!
