Star Trek: Discovery: Dead Endless (6) Paperback – December 17, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
The U.S.S. Discovery’s specialty is using its spore-based hub drive to jump great distances faster than any warp-faring vessel in Starfleet. To do this, Lieutenant Paul Stamets navigates the ship through the recently revealed mycelial network, a subspace domain Discovery can briefly transit but in which it cannot remain. After responding to a startling distress call originating from within the network, the Discovery crew find themselves trapped in an inescapable realm where they will surely perish unless their missing mycelial fuel is found or restored. Is the seemingly human man found alone and alive inside the network the Starfleet officer he claims to be, or an impostor created by alien intruders who hope to extract themselves from the mycelial plane at the expense of all lives aboard Discovery?

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020It's hard to talk specifics about this book because so much of it hinges around surprise and spoilers. I genuinely enjoyed the story and the character interactions were great, very true to the series.
But like all the other Discovery books, they seem to be doing everything possible not to be a traditional tie-in book for an ongoing series. Books set long before or after the action of the core show, or sometimes to the side of the action. This book takes a different route entirely that is pretty clever. But still, it's a strange choice they have been taking in this series, as it often means that everything I love about Discovery doesn't quite show up in the books.
That doesn't take away from the quality of the books, they are all still very well written and entertaining, just not quite what I was expecting based on other tie-in series, including Star Trek.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2020A very good and different kind of novel, I won't say much because it will be spoiling the plot point, but this novel explores the part in the series where Hugh Culber "dies", and this explains how he got revived and got in contact again with Paul Stammets.
The novel revolves about them and a new being, a tardigrade called "Ephraim", who acts as the go-between in the physical and the mycellial network. The Discovery crew has been stranded on the mycellial network and they must find a solution to go back to the real space before the ship slowly disintegrates by the outside forces, but they are also threatened by an invasion of aliens.
I can't say much due to the heavy spoiler-filled plot, but this is a very good exploration of some of the unusual characters in the series.
Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2019I finished "Dead Endless" this afternoon, and I have to say it's probably my favorite "Star Trek: Discovery" novels to date! From the interesting plot twist that keeps you guessing until roughly a third of the way through, to the PERFECT capture of the characters' voices (some of which you don't get to hear much from in the course of a typical episode), this is an EXCELLENT read if you're a fan of Discovery in general and Stamets/Culber in particular!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019The author does a very, very good job of capturing the voices of the characters here, from Culber to Stamets to Tilly. He's really got their characters well. And we get a view into the Culber and Stamets relationship that we only get a glimpse of in Season 1 of Discovery. The writing is strong, and the story really keeps your attention. If you enjoy Culber and Stamets, I highly recommend this book. And Tilly! She's fabulous here.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2020Like all the other Discovery novels this one is meant to be canon and be part of the Discovery universe. It's an interesting story that revolves around Stamets and Huber. My biggest complaint is that it's just too long. This could have easily been a long short story or a novella, but CBS has decided that all the Discovery novels be about the same length. So this one just dragged on. If you're a huge Discovery fan then add this book to your collection, but like all the other Discovery novels if you miss this one you're not really missing much and you'll still be able to follow the adventures of Michael Burnham and she lectures and cries her way through time and space.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2019I'm not sure what I expected but I very much enjoyed this book. It was an easy read and fun way to be back in season one DSC and not be at the same time. The author seems to really 'hear' the characters of Paul Stamets & Hugh Culber. I could almost see the actors in my mind's eye and hear them too as I read the book. He also does a good job of giving us a little bit of the other members of Discovery. A little bit of background for them here and there that just seems to fit. I just listened to an interview of the author on the podcast Literary Treks (#292) where he mentioned that he's watched every episode 5-6 times and I think it shows in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020Really fun story. It’s worth reading if you’re a fan of the show. There are some truly laugh out loud Ensign Tilly moments and the story adds a lot of depth to the Staments Culber relationship.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2023Completely absorbing, I couldn't put it down. (I went to check what other books the author has written, and am sad to learn this is his last one, because he died not long after this was published.)

5.0 out of 5 stars well, that was excellent.
Well, that was excellent. Building on established episodes, filling in some gaps, opening up entire new possibilities and a gradual slow build to what’s really going on that was just right in how it was slightly wrong. Can’t say more without spoilers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and clever story
The sixth novel based on Star Trek: Discovery takes us on an interesting journey following the relationship between Stamens and Culber, focussed on a period that lightly intersects with events depicted in the second season - it’s important I think to have watched season two (as well as season one) before reading.
As with other novels in the series, the author has worked to avoid doing too much that could later be contradicted by the canon, but Galanter has taken an interesting direction with this, which I won’t talk too much about. Suffice it to say that it’s genius.
It’s a clever plot, shows the characters emotional depth, builds up slowly, like a mystery peeling back layers on what’s going on at the perfect pace for the reader to keep just one step ahead, hinting slightly more before finally reaching somewhere unexpectedly delightful.
I’ve been really impressed with the Discovery novels so far, and this has to be one of the best. A great tale well told.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing
The beginning of the story is hard to understand and still doesn't make a lot of sense in the end.
