Editorial Reviews

Review

“An empathetic read in dealing with anxiety, fear of failure, and constructive (or not so constructive) criticism. (Entrepreneurs, startup founders, young professionals, and creative professionals would be wise to pick this book up.)”
Fortune

“A creativity guide that positively vibrates with [Day’s] bubbly comedic sensibility. . . . She writes, ‘Playfulness is the root of all creation.’ Her book delights in manifesting that idea.”
BookPage

Praise for You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost):

“Felicia is a lot of fun, and so is her book.”
—George R.R. Martin

“Smart, funny, endearing, nerdy, and maybe also a little bit brave—in other words, very much like its author.”
—John Scalzi, Hugo Award-winning author of Redshirts

“Felicia Day gives us an achingly funny, honest, open look at being 'situationally famous,' (I love that phrase), plus the vital art of finding your creative joy, and weathering the storms that follow. It's a wonderful book. Buy it before I grab
all the copies.”
—Rachel Caine, author of The Morganville Vampires

“[An] inspirational comic memoir . . . to set alongside Tina Fey's
Bossypants, Amy Poehler's Yes Please, Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Lena Dunham's Not That Kind of Girl and Sarah Silverman's The Bedwetter. Young people of both sexes and every gender should find much to empower them. (Older people, too, for that matter.)”
Los Angeles Times

“Written in her engaging and often hilarious voice, it's just downright fun to read.”
USA Today (3.5 out of 4 stars)

“At last,
You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) reveals the secret origin story of everyone’s favorite geek super heroine! Felicia Day’s memoir is honest, hopeful, and hysterical. It’s the story of a girl who grew up lost and lonely—then became a self-made internet rock star. Reading it will make you feel like you can take on the whole Empire yourself.”
—Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One

“Relentlessly funny and surprisingly inspirational to anyone who grew up a geek and continually doubts themselves to this day. That’s a pretty wide audience, if I had to guess. . . . Day’s fans will obviously like the memoir, but it has more than niche appeal. It’s not meant to be a self-help book, but I found that’s the effect it had on me all the same.”
—Forbes.com

“Quirky, uplifting and full of stories about embracing your inner nerd. Day has proven herself to be as talented in front of the camera as she is behind it. It's evident that she's a brilliant businesswoman whose avatar has secured a residence in digital media past, present and future.”
Associated Press

"Charming and funny."
Marie Claire

“Day writes charmingly. . . . [She] is delightfully good company and has an interesting story to tell.”
Kirkus Reviews

“A super (and superquirky) memoir.”
Booklist

“Day’s writing is warm and charming. Fans of her work will gobble this up, but anyone who has ever despaired of finding their passions would benefit from a read as well.”
Library Journal

“An illuminating, frank look at the commercial realities, injustices and insecurities that everyone trying to earn a living online must confront. . . . Day's unflinching look at the traps she fell into as a ‘success’ are a welcome addition to the canon of ‘how I made it’ stories, and a reminder that we live our own blooper reels and experience other people's highlight reels. . . . It’s a must-read.”
BoingBoing

“Whether you nerd out on video games, makeup, or musical theater, you'll find it an entertaining source of personal inspiration.”
Refinery29

“Throughout the entire book, Day offers up all kinds of amazing life advice that will truly impact others, especially young girls, women, those who don't feel accepted, and those who are struggling in life.”
Bustle

“Reading Felicia Day’s memoir is like going on a road trip with an old friend you never knew you had. This is the perfect book to prove you aren't the only misfit in the world, and to remind you that that's a very good thing.”
Jenny Lawson, author of Let's Pretend This Never Happened

“Smart, brave, emotionally raw, and hysterically funny. This is one of the best books ever written about what it's like to be a human being on the Internet.”
—Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians

“Everything Felicia creates seems to succeed. This book should be no different. It’s a great read—far from ‘horrible’ and worth every ‘Penny.’ See what I did there? It’s a play on . . . never mind.”
—Neil Patrick Harris, author of Choose Your Own Autobiography and Day's costar in Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is exactly like Felicia herself: intriguing, funny, vulnerable, and uniquely cool. If you’ve ever been awkward, ever doubted yourself, ever second-guessed who you are, this book is for you. Reading it is like having the quirkiest, most hilarious, most brilliant person you’ve ever met grab you by the shirtfront and say, ‘HEY. IT’S OKAY TO BE YOU.’”
—Deanna Raybourn, Rita Award-winning author of The Dark Enquiry

“Math nerd defies physics! Felicia Day, who is woven from moonbeams, has written a book that seems lighter than air, but that ends up punching you firmly in the emotions. Felicia lays out a hilarious tale of how her unique upbringing, eclectic skill set, and killer work ethic led to
The Guild, one of the pioneering works of online creativity. In the process, she pulls you inside her delicate skull, so that the final moving chapters aren’t as much read as they are experienced. An excellent book.”
—Jane Espenson, writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Once Upon a Time, and Husbands

"
You're Never Weird on the Internet is fun, hilarious, and impossible to put down. Reading it is like getting a mega-shot of courage -- to be exactly who you are and no one else, to pursue your dreams fearlessly, to embrace your weirdness and wield it like a superpower. If you want to live a life true to yourself and not what others expect of you, you won't find better inspiration than Felicia Day. If you're not one of Felicia's millions of fans yet -- you will be."
—Jane McGonigal, author of Superbetter and Reality is Broken

"I came for the delightful snark, I stayed for the disarming frankness and the hard-won insights about the Internet -- Felicia Day uses the Internet to distribute entertainment, but she understands that it's really there to be the nervous system of the twenty-first century."
—Cory Doctorow, co-editor of Boing Boing and author of Little Brother

Best of its kind!
I've tried other workbooks and not cared much for them, but this one IS. GREAT. It does a wonderful job of walking the line between humorous, serious, and helpful! It feels like hanging out with an encouraging friend! Some of the insights really surprised me given how silly the book can be! As a 30-something I really enjoy it, but I also want to buy it for every young creative ever. It's probably going to be gifted to a bunch of people this christmas!

I love this book, it's definitely one of my favorites I've ever read!
It shares different ways to be creative, explore yourself, embrace making mistakes, and try new things with an open mind.
The author is very unapologetically herself, even through text, which makes it enjoyable to read and not dry and hard to follow like a lot of other, more formulaic or wishy-washy books.
10/10 - everyone who considers themselves creative or wants to embrace themselves a little more.

“Embrace Your weird” is more than just another book you can read. Right from the start, author Felicia Day invites us to us it as a creativity workbook, coloring, doodling, writing wherever there is available space. Don’t worry, even though you are asked to write down your thoughts, the quirky Felicia Day from “You’re Never Weird On The Internet (Almost)” shows up and graces every page with the wit and humor she showered us with that first time. “Embrace Your Weird” is not another memoir book, as she cheerfully jumps from her life into ours. Ms. Day’s goal? Convince each one of us that we have incredible talents to share with the world.

In order to accomplish this task, the author shares her own devices for victory over the mind-numbing monsters that threaten to crush our creativity and force us to hide under our personal bushel baskets. This book is loaded with power, and here’s why. The person writing it is not some highly educated professor with a wall full of degrees and awards, nor is it someone who has identified a niche of psychological barriers and written a well-thought tome of rules and procedures to follow. Ms. Day shares how she worked to overcome her demons, sharing her knowledge and wisdom in an entertaining manner. She is encouraging and down-to-earth, urging us to break out of our shells but cautioning us to remember that our goals should be based on our own power and not the choices of others. Sage advice, indeed.

The combination of the author’s thoughts and writing/drawing exercises for us to complete combine to form a fun/amusing/educational/awesome book that, by the end, should have morphed from something Ms. Day created to something that also contains our personal inventions, and thus a part of us. Growth CAN be fun! Five stars.

I can't put into words how extraordinarily fun, insightful, and entertaining this book was. I'm so glad I ordered the physical copy, because you can't get the same fun from the Kindle copy.

It took me some time to complete this book, as I wanted to absorb the messages and complete every task with clarity and precision. Felicia Day has many exercises in this, and there's not a single one that's not worth doing.

Felicia encourages each and every one of us to embrace our weird, and to not shy away from our creative endeavors. Mine is writing. I took a lot of her lessons very personally and applied as much as I could to my writing and my view on writing. Before reading this book, I was struggling to write a book I'd been stuck on for nearly five years. Now, as I write this review immediately after finishing this amazing book, I can proudly say I have finished my novel! I think Felicia would be mad at me if I gave too much credit to her book, as I'm the one who put in the effort. my Hero-Self came through, and I accomplished my creative goal, just as she showed me how to do in this book.

All in all, I cannot recommend this book enough to everyone. Whether you're having problems starting/finishing your creative project, or you just want a boost in confidence with your creativity, Felicia Day's EMBRACE YOUR WEIRD is the book for you!

This book really shook up my stagnant mind and helped me to re-accept my inner creative wild child. It was filled with the quirky humor I’ve come to associate with Felicia Day, while still having some really solid advice and guidance.

First, I probably wouldn’t recommend this via kindle. I’m a kindle lover and audiobooker, but I think that paper is probably the way to go here. There’s lots of drawing and writing involved, so it will just slow you down if you’re digital. It starts simply enough, with some creative exercises, but gets really deep fast. It’s amazing how opening one door can lead to so many others. My primary field is not super creative, but my husband is photographer, so I immediately bought the book for him to check out, too! It applies to everyone, so there’s no real age group or demographic I could see this targeting (unless it’s just me – is it me?).

If you’re looking for something to truly shake you up – this is the book! It’s fun, weird, and super creative. I’m tired of the boring helpful books and am happy to have discovered this one!

Felicia has long been a superhero of creativity. From her web series The Guild, to the numerous shows she created at her media company Geek & Sundry, to her many writing and producing projects, she has always had several creative irons in the fire. So it’s exciting to have her devote a book to creativity itself!

The book is full of engaging exercises and practical techniques for nurturing your own unique, creative voice. I found the chapter on enemies to creativity particularly useful. It helps work past those obstacles — internal and external — that prevent us from getting our ideas out. Whether your medium is writing, painting, dancing, playing an instrument, or anything else, this book gets at the basic force of wanting to express ourselves that underlies all creative efforts.

The writing is funny and full of energy, and the illustrations add to the book’s fun spirit. The creativity put into every page of the book may inspire you all by itself!

If you want to get better at coming up with creative ideas and be able to bring them to life, you owe it to yourself to read this book!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2019
I'm currently only a quarter way through but by the end of the first chapter Felicia nails what I am going through once again. She makes everything so relatable and like she is your friend sat next to you mentoring you through a dark time... or maybe not dark for you. This is really life affirming stuff and things I should of been taught as a child. Can't recommend this book enough.

I admit I was terrified to write in this book to begin to start with as it seems like it's her book and to doodle in it seems rude. But after writing and drawing all over this book, it's more like a platform and we are having this conversation across time and space. Every now and again I write a retort to one of her statements and sometime's I even disagree. YES. Disagree with Felicia Day. How dare I! I must know though. Why does cat disdain me? What did I do? Is it my lack of a six pack?

If you are indoctrinated to be nothing more than a can opener or a spoon and who's real nature is to be an artist of any kind please use this book and don't be afraid to scribble everywhere in it. Despite how school makes you feel about yourself YOU INHERENTLY HAVE VALUE and YOU HAVE THINGS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS WORLD. PEOPLE WANT TO SEE AND HEAR YOU AND WILL LOVE YOU for your creativity. You may just not know it yet. The most important thing is to begin and not let anyone to deter you from your natural destiny.

It’s great to have on you to fill in a page when things get a bit tough and you need a bit of grounding and escapism.
