About the authors
Jeff Strand's bio was funnier when he talked about losing the Bram Stoker Award four times, but he's now a Bram Stoker Award WINNER!
His novels are usually classified as horror, but they're really all over the place, almost always with a great big dose of humor. He's written five young adult novels that all fall into the "really goofy comedy" category.
Several of his books are in development as motion pictures, and he's mostly not allowed to blab any details, which he finds MADDENING.
He currently lives in sunny, warm Duluth, Minnesota with author Bridgett Nelson.
“James A. Moore is the new prince of grimdark fantasy. His work is full of dark philosophy and savage violence, desperate warriors and capricious gods. This is fantasy for people who like to wander nighttime forests and scream at the moon. Exhilarating as hell."
—Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of SNOWBLIND and ARARAT
“Gripping, horrific, and unique, James Moore continues to be a winner, whatever genre he’s writing in. Well worth your time.”
– Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of the InCryptid and Toby Daye series
James A. Moore’s, The Last Sacrifice, the 1st book in The Tides of War series, delivers on every level. A pulse quickening dark fantasy ripe with fascinating, multifaceted heroes and villains, and a vein of the horrific that barely hides, squirming just below the surface of it all. I can’t wait to see where this goes in Book 2.
Thomas E. Sniegoski – New York Times Best Selling author of The Fallen series, and the Remy Chandler books.
"You emerge from any Moore novel feeling like you've spent some time in that world––traumatised, beaten up, bloodied from battle––and The Last Sacrifice is no exception. Brilliantly imaginative, intricately drawn, this is a novel and an experience you won't forget in a hurry." - Tim Lebbon, author of The Silence and Relics
“THE LAST SACRIFICE is brilliant, devious, dark and compelling. This is epic fantasy at its very best. Highly recommended!” –Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of KILL SWITCH and MARS ONE
JAMES A. MOORE is the author of over forty novels, including the critically acclaimed Fireworks, Under The Overtree, Blood Red, Blood Harvest, the Serenity Falls trilogy (featuring his recurring anti-hero, Jonathan Crowley) Cherry Hill, Alien: Sea of Sorrows and the Seven Forges series of novels. He has twice been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award and spent three years as an officer in the Horror Writers Association, first as Secretary and later as Vice President.
Never one to stay in one genre for too long, James has recently written epic fantasy novels in the series SEVEN FORGES (Seven Forges, the Blasted Lands, City of Wonders and The Silent Army). He is working on a new series called The Tides Of War. The first book in the series The Last Sacrifice, came out this last January and the sequel, Fallen Gods, is due out in late December. Pending novels also include A Hell Within (a Griffin & Price Novel) co-written with Charles R. Rutledge and an apocalyptic Sci-Fi novel tentatively called Spores. Why be normal?
Being a confirmed Luddite, he is working up the nerve to plunge completely into the electronic publications age.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2024Christopher’s mom won tickets to the H.F Enterprises Halloween Haunted Forest Tour. Where they get to ride through the Forest. It was supposed to be a safe trip so they were told. They didn’t expect the Tram to break down. They didn’t expect to be left out in the dark with a bunch of monsters. Will they survive the haunted forest or become the monsters’ dinner?
This was a fun and spooky book. It pulled me out of a severe reading funk. It has good characters, humor, story arc and flow. It was easy to read and quickly pulled me into it from the beginning. The epilogue was quick and simple and did not drag the book longer than it should have been.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2025"The Haunted Forest Tour by James A. Moore is a wildly entertaining, high-octane thrill ride that blends horror, humor, and adventure into a unique and unforgettable reading experience. From the very first page, the book plunges you into its imaginative and chaotic world, where a once-ordinary forest has become home to every nightmare creature imaginable—and the setting for a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction.
The premise is delightfully absurd: visitors board armored trams for a guided tour through the Haunted Forest, a place teeming with monsters so terrifying and bizarre they sound like something out of your wildest (or worst) dreams. While the company behind the tours promises a safe and thrilling experience, things quickly spiral into chaos when a special Halloween route takes the trams deeper into the forest than ever before. What begins as a spooky spectacle soon becomes a fight for survival.
Moore masterfully uses multiple perspectives to weave together the story’s timeline. Each character’s viewpoint adds a unique layer to the unfolding disaster, creating a fast-paced narrative that keeps you on edge. From scientists and tour operators to tourists with varying motivations, the cast of characters is diverse and well-rounded, lending a sense of realism to this fantastical setup. Their interactions and reactions feel believable, and their mix of bravery, humor, and desperation makes it easy to stay invested in their fates.
The monsters are undoubtedly the stars of the show, and Moore doesn’t hold back when it comes to creativity. From classic creatures like werewolves and ghosts to horrifyingly unique abominations, the haunted forest is brimming with nightmares brought to life. Each encounter is vividly described, capturing both the terror and the awe that come with facing such deadly adversaries.
What sets this book apart is its balance of horror and humor. While there’s plenty of gore and suspense, the humor provides a much-needed counterweight, ensuring the story never takes itself too seriously. The concept itself is outlandish, and Moore leans into it, embracing the absurdity in a way that makes the story all the more fun.
The only minor drawback is that the relentless pace leaves little room for deeper exploration of some characters or the forest’s origins. However, the sheer excitement and imaginative storytelling more than make up for it.
Overall, "The Haunted Forest Tour" is a must-read for fans of creature features, dark humor, and roller-coaster horror. It’s a book that knows exactly what it wants to be—pure, unadulterated fun—and delivers on every promise. Whether you’re in it for the scares, the laughs, or the action, this tour is worth the price of admission.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2021I have read several of Jeff Strand's novels, but none from James Moore. These two created a hybrid of fantasy, horror, science fiction and action with this book.
I enjoyed the first half of this story, it doesn't waste much time getting right into the gory deaths and monster slaying. Speaking of which, the two authors got pretty creative with the different creatures; Things from classical fantasy, mythology and horror and original ghoulies that led to some genuinely gruesome kills.
But I felt the second half was kind of disappointing and ventured too far into cartoonish territory, particularly with the main bad guy. The explanation given for the supernatural occurrences was not explained in very much detail, only a generic and rather easy trope was used. And the human characters do not have much depth to them, and they tend do things that are flat out unbelievable and go down the path of horror movie stupidity. And none have any qualities that make you care for any of them.
The ending also felt rushed and abrupt, it wasn't terrible it just felt like the authors didn't know what else to do and just axed it.
If you are looking for a book equivalent of a B-Movie gore fest I recommend, just be sure to suspend your disbelief before opening the cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great and easy read!
This book is quite a treat. It's easy reading and the plot is pretty original. The characters are likable, even the evil one. The end comes fast, and then it's over. Lots of people dying in gruesome ways, done read if you cannot handle that.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Be Monsters As Far As The Eye Can See!
You know when you see a book that looks great, and sounds exactly like the kind of read that you love, that you want to grab it and read it right away? That was my reaction when I heard about this one. I took one look at that great cover, the intriguing title and that tour guide blurb and I just had to read it. Once I had it, then I worried in case I ended up disappointed by it, but I'm glad to say that I loved it!
The book starts with a fascinating quick introduction to how the Haunted Forest came to exist in the first place and it throws you right into the adventure. It is followed by the story going forward 4 years to the established tour company getting ready for the next trip, an introduction to the staff who work on the tours and a bit about some of the passengers about to embark on this special Halloween trip. Instead of following the rails around the edge of the forest, this new trip is going to take the thrillseekers into the very centre of the forest for the first time ever, to get a chance at seeing all the monsters. It is, of course, perfectly safe.
"Nobody has ever been eaten on one of our tours and nobody ever will!"
Eddie is the driver of the tram with tour guide Barbara for company, both very experienced at their jobs. Amongst the passengers are monster fans and skeptics, the curious and the downright scared. As the tram creeps along on the rails, the darkness of the forest surrounds them and they start to see movement amongst the trees. The tension level builds quickly as the shocked passengers see things that they never believe existed, a a few start to fear what could happen if the monsters were to attack their transport. Then the unthinkable happens and their tram loses all power, stranding it in the middle of the forest, in the dark with the monsters starting to creep closer. Fear turns to panic as they notice that the second tram is coming up behind them at full speed, unaware that they are currently stuck...
So it begins! With two damaged trams unable to move and the monsters closing it, there seems to be little choice left to the passengers and crew-stay and vainly hope that these monsters won't break into the trams before a rescue comes or flee into the woods and try to run for the safety outside the forest. Whichever choice they make, they are dealing with a wide range of hungry monsters that are determined to feed, everything from giant spiders and ogres to flying things and demons. The tour promised that they would see amazing and deadly things. They are going to get their money's worth before they start to die...
I'm not going to say any more about the actual plot as I don't want to spoil the book for everyone who wants to read it. I liked that we found out how the forest and monsters came to be there before we join the adventurers going in. There was enough information about the main characters to have us get to know them and why they were there, but not enough to start getting bogged down in unnecessary stuff. We get a bit about the people on the trams as they move into the forest but then the focus switches to what they see. I'm happy with the level of character detail-it's the right amount for me to give a damn about them without the need for every detail of their life.
The monsters were just awesome. It starts with fleeting shadows moving between the trees and glowing eyes staring at the passengers, which starts to get a few of them freaked out. They start to realise just how big and scary some of these things are and the heart-rate of both passenger and reader may well start to increase. Initially it is that 'what IS that out there' feeling but then it becomes clearer what some of the things are and it gets scary. The passengers are already getting nervous and scared by the time the power cuts out. I found it very easy to feel their fear and imagine what would happen if I was sitting on that tram with power gone. Change of underwear for starters!
From the moment the power goes out it becomes a fast paced creature feature monster buffet as passengers become appetisers. The death toll is huge and it is one scary ride as we follow the fates of the passengers as they try to survive, hide and run. Monster after monster swoops in from every direction and causes utter carnage. I loved this part of the book so much, like the twisted horror fan that I am! I particularly loved the ogres! No character is safe as this section of the book shoots along at rapid speed, and the writing is great. It really did grab me and I didn't want to stop reading! The book also covers why this is happening which I found equally interesting and there are a couple of interesting twists as we go along.
There is nothing I love more than reading about monsters and this is one of the best ones I've read for that. My dad also loved this one. If you like fast paced creature feature books with high body counts, a splattering of gore and an interesting story, then I would recommend this book. It is not for the faint hearted or those who don't like real horror. I would love to see this as a film and a sequel would be nice, perhaps in a jungle setting or tropical island! I originally gave this four stars but on reflection and book comparisons, I have bumped it up to five stars for sheer scary entertainment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Super
