- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2018The Muvipix.com Guide to Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018: The tools in Adobe's amazing photo editing program and how to use them
If memory serves, it was 1996 when I discovered Photoshop 4 LE among the free software that was included with my newly-purchased scanner. I’d purchased the hardware because of its ability, in combination with OCR software, to convert pages of print into editable text that I could then paste as long quotations into a book that I was writing with Word. I was utterly amazed by this capability.
Upon reading the scanner’s documentation, I learned that the hardware was also capable of digitizing photos and transparencies, which is why Adobe’s software was included. And upon reading Adobe’s documentation, I learned for the first time that software exists that can edit the digital photos that are produced by digital cameras.
“Why would anyone want to produce digital photos?” I asked myself, when they can produce breathtaking transparencies that can be projected onto movie screens. Ten years would pass before I would see the light (pun intended).
According to Adobe’s web site, my first purchase of Adobe Photoshop Elements (Version 4.0) occurred in January 2006. This acquisition was followed by the purchase of Adobe Premiere Elements (Version 3.0) in October of that same year. By 2008, I had become sufficiently interested in producing videos in addition to still photos that I began searching the internet for guidance. The happy result was my discovery of Muvipix, a website for videographers that Steve Grisetti had co-founded in 2006.
A few years later, after installing a PRE/PSE/Organizer 7 bundle on my Win 7 machine, I was so utterly happy with their performance that I was certain they would be my last purchase of Elements software. But subsequently, in October 2012, PSE 11 was published with some new “must-have” features that PSE 7 lacked, so I acquired it for editing photos but continued to produce my videos with PRE7. At that point I was more certain than ever that I had all the software I could ever need for the type of creations that I produce.
Wrong!
By January 2018, two events had taken place: a) Adobe had published the PRE/PSE/ORG 2018 bundle (aka Version 16) b) Grisetti had published expository books to cover them (I always wait for his books to be published before acquiring Elements software).
IMO, Adobe’s Elements software and Steve go together like a racehorse and its jockey: the software “racehorse” is powerful and full of potential to achieve great things but the best possible outcomes require an experienced jockey.
How experienced is Steve? The answer is that he has been writing books about Elements software since their initial releases. No one has more experience with the Elements racehorses. And as his latest books prove, he has mastered the art of expository writing. For the most recent evidence of that statement, let’s take a look at the elegant method that he uses to assemble the book Photoshop Elements 2018, which he’s divided into six parts.
Part I is entitled “Photoshop Elements Basics.” It consists of two chapters.
Chapter 1, “Things You Need to Know”, subtitled “Principles of photo and graphics editing,” discusses each of these fundamental topics: Pixels, Resolution, Raster v. Vector graphics, Image Size v. Canvas Size, Selections, Layers, Alpha, RGB Color, and the Tool Options Bin. The final section asks and then answers the question: What is a native PSD file?
Chapter 2, “Get to Know Photoshop Elements 2018,” subtitled “What’s what and what it does,” introduces the following: Elements Live (eLive), The Welcome Screen, The Editor Workspace, The Photo Bin, What’s new in Photoshop Elements 2018, and asks the question, Need some Basic Training? (See below for further discussion of eLive.)
Regarding the section on Basic Training, consider this: Steve Grisetti is inviting his readers to visit his site, Muvipix, for all sorts of freebies, including an eight-part series of tutorials on Photoshop Elements — PLUS free tutorials for other software AND he is also inviting folks to log on to the site to ask questions of the Muvipix community! (However, although he will often personally respond, Steve does request that questions in the site’s Community Forum be directed to the community as a whole, rather than to him specifically, so that other members of the community will feel free to participate.)
Part II, “Quick and Guided Photo Editing,” consists of two chapters, one dedicated to each of those workspaces. Like his entire book, Part II is lavishly illustrated.
Chapter 3, “Quick Fixes,” subtitled “Easy way to touch up photos,” discusses the relevant methods with both text and multiple helpful illustrations.
Chapter 4, “Guided Effects,” subtitled “Photo adjustments and cool tricks, one step at a time,” leads the reader — step-by-illustrated-step — through each of the techniques, including demonstrations on eLive for readers who are online. An acquaintance has stated that this one chapter alone is worth the price of the entire book!
Part III, “The Expert Photo Editing Workspace,” consists of six chapters.
Chapter 5, “Get to Know the Photoshop Elements Toolbox,” is subtitled, “Your main photo editing toolkit.” It discusses the dozens of different editing tools that are available in the program.
Chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 discuss the following in detail: Isolating (“Selecting”) Areas in Your Photos, Resizing Your Images, Correcting Color and Lighting, Working with Layers, Creating and Editing Text, Adding Photo Effects and Filters.
Part IV, “Advanced Photo Editing,” consists of three chapters with the following titles.
Chapter 12, “Photoshop Elements Tricks.”
Chapter 13, “Advanced Photo Editing Tools.”
Chapter 14, “Learn About Your Photoshop Elements File.”
Part V is devoted to the all-important “Elements 2018 Organizer,” which actually can do so much more than organize your media. The organization feature is fully discussed in Chapter 15.
Chapter 16 discusses in both text and illustrations how the Organizer can be used “create fun pieces,” including: Slideshows, Photo Prints, Photo Books, Greeting Cards, Calendars, Collages, Instant Movies, Video Stories, DVDs with Menus, Facebook Covers, CD Jackets, DVD Jackets, CD/DVD Labels and a Facebook Cover Page.
Chapter 17, entitled “Share Your Photos and Videos,” discusses how to share your creations with any of the following: Facebook, via email, on Flickr, on Twitter, on Vimeo, on YouTube, as a Video DVD, as a PDF Slide Show.
What else can the Organizer do?
The answer is lots more. Yesterday, for example, I sharpened over 1600 still photos in about ten minutes with the Organizer, by making use of its Instant Fix feature called Clarity. Here are three other Instant Fix choices: Flip Photo Horizontal, Crop, Red-Eye Removal. While those three work with only one slide at a time, the following will work with either one or a group of slides (hundreds): Effects/FX ( choose from the program library’s dozens of effects), Smart Fix (supplies instant brightness, color and sharpness effects), Light (supplies previews of lighting adjustments), Color (supplies previews of instant color adjustments).
What, according to Steve, is the outcome that readers can expect if they read this book and, if they wish, join the Muvipix community?
“I think you’ll find that, once you learn the basics, making movies on your home computer is a lot more fun than you ever imagined! And you may even amaze yourself with the results in the process.” (This statement is quoted from an un-numbered page in the front matter of the book.)

- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2017I utilize this book as a user's manual. Although the book is over 250 pages long, it's easy to find what you need help with because of its detailed table of contents in the beginning and a complete index in the back.
