- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2018Mr Larson is a gifted writer. I think I an earlier review I might have compared him to the more famous, but not necessarily better, writer Lee Child. I can safely say there isn't a book he has written that I don't like.
So, enough of the gratuitous praise.
Blood world is another of a series of books featuring McGill, an overaged adolescent in an intriguing future where death is a painful inconvenience for the armed forces of Earth. You do not need to read any of the predecessor books to be able to understand this one but it does help you love the characters more and appreciate their motivation.
McGill is now at the rank of Centurion. Yes, old Roman military titles are in use, however this is not a throwback to an alternate timeline in which the Roman civilisation survived.
And with the greater responsibility thrust on him McGill is dealing with more mature issues such as a daughter, the problems associated with shagging anything that shows even minor interest and the fate, once again, of humanity.
If this all sounds like one of those dreary sci fi pieces most reminiscent of The Bold and the Beautiful or whatever passes for a daytime soap these days, then cease your thoughts of boredom. For this is not that awful thing. This is funny and quirky and certainly worthy of your time.
It is however an unfinished tome. But the author needs to fund his next widescreen tv or vacation to the Maldives and a sequel (or a ninth-quell?) satisfies t
his need and also mine to find out where McGill us going to be and who he's going to do... errrr I mean what... I think.
Try it out. It's a fun read and great for the bus, train or a quiet corner.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2017Not the best novel in the Undying Mercenaries series in my opinion, but the adventures of "James McGill" continue to deliver!
On the downside, this story was a little too repetitive... McGill fights a battle, returns to pursue his romantic interests, fights the next day, then chases women again, over and over... OK, OK, I get it, that's James McGill, but it was all getting a little too tiring and predictable for me.
Even so, there's plenty of twists and turns in the story, and all of the series memorable characters return which made putting the novel down - without reading it all the way through almost irresistible.
I noticed that B.V. Lawrence spent more time telling us about Etta, McGill's daughter, in this novel. Can we expect to see more of her in the future stories of this saga? I hope so. Imagine what the "Undying Mercenary" universe would be like with, not one - but two (!) McGill's running around?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2017Another wonderful entry into the Undying Mercenary series. McGill once again finds himself in the middle of a military mission which is just the tip of the iceberg for a bunch of political machinations. And once McGill masterfully navigates these treacherous waters. **Small Spoiler: It was funny to see McGill's lecherous tendencies used against him, although in the end the negative results for himself were minimal.** It was really nice to see a lot of the old characters back in action. There were a few new characters introduced, who, though were not bad, I did not find as compelling as McGill's usual crew.
A few notes to Mr. Larson:
1. I'm a big fan of Floramel. I really like her combination of intelligence and naivete. I know McGill is nowhere near ready to settle down, and his dealings with the various women characters are part of what makes these books so fun to read. However, I humbly request you keep Floramel a part of McGill's life and experiences.
2. I also appreciate those father-daughter scenes with Etta. She is another terrific character, and I'd love to see her grow up in the series. Shoot, maybe she could have her own series when she is old enough!
Please do what you have to do to keep this terrific series going!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2017Love the series. James McGill is a great character. The unlikely hero who somehow, advertently or inadvertently always manages to find the right solution to a problem, usually involving some violence. His wry wit and perspective on things, the way he wrangles out of trouble and his way with the ladies is all very entertaining. You won't regret reading this book and the whole series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2018Good, as all in this series.
However, for sanity's sake, would just one treasonous snake committing high treason get treated as all high treason committing snakes should - by getting their treasonous head chipped off - for good?
I can only take so many times- here it seems like 30 or so - of the same multiple characters committing multiple acts of treason, and getting caught, then showing up in the next book in the series, usually still in charge, or at least in a position of command over our poor protagonist.
C'mon B.V., give us some accountability, then dream up an even more absurd antagonist.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2018I initially started started this book series through the Kindle Lenders Library, but quickly managed to purchase at least 6 of the novels. Once you get started the story quickly unfolds. I would suggest reading the entire series in order and I am glad I purchased many of the books since I have gone back at least once to re-read the series. As far as the content this is science fiction without too much detail in the technology of the book's environment. Plenty of action throughout the series with character continuation and development in each book. Where would I like James McGill to venture next? Maybe Earth to see if there is any rebel activity left......

5.0 out of 5 stars Great action, great language and soo much fun to read
I simply love the story of James McGill. He is insane, he is ruthless, he is a a liar and a killer - but he is also honest, brave, loyal and funny. Tarantino meets space. Nothing better in this category in the market. Must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars L'histoire sans fin de James Mc Guill

5.0 out of 5 stars Old school space opera
Another cracking volume in the undying mercenaries series. It's a simple narrative, carried off with verve and no small degree of panache. I really enjoy this series, it's good, old fashioned story telling and I've not yet failed to finish a volume in a single sitting on the day I bought it. Cracking stuff, pacey, brutal, a tiny bit silly and a lot of fun. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A twist on the story
This eighth novel of the “Undying Mercenaries “ series starts to get more political, as our hero rises in rank and starts to become involved in the plots and intrigues of the highest levels of the earth’s government. Still lots of fighting and dying.
