Cricket Hunters Paperback โ€“ August 30, 2019

4.2 out of 5 stars 65 ratings

Celia (Garcia) Lundy was fifteen in the fall of 1998 when Abby Powell, one of her five friends who called themselves the Cricket Hunters, disappeared without a trace. Cops scoured the central Texas town of Oak Mott searching for Abby. Interviewed everyone. Brought in the Texas Rangers to assist. Three key suspects emerged and were focused on, but no evidence was found. Eventually, the case went cold, and the passage of time buried the truth of Abby Powellโ€™s fate.Fifteen years later, as the anniversary of Abbyโ€™s disappearance approaches, Celโ€™s life is upended when her husband Parker, also once a Cricket Hunter, goes missing. When bizarre clues surface that point to a link between Parkerโ€™s and Abbyโ€™s disappearances, Cel is forced to delve back into the past in order to navigate the present. With the help of her abuela, a self-proclaimed bruja, she embarks on a tumultuous journey fraught with confrontation and trickery, spells and spirits, theft and murder, in order to find out what happened to her husband, and why.

Coming-of-age - but darker than you're used to!

Coming-of-age - but darker than you're used to!
This is hands down one of the BEST books Iโ€™ve read in all of 2019, and I canโ€™t recommend it highly enough. If youโ€™re the type of person that doesnโ€™t need to read a full review of something to want to buy or read it โ€“ GO NOW! ORDER IT! You wonโ€™t regret it! In the story, weโ€™re introduced to a central cast of characters that we follow through a timespan of 15 years. I loved the transitions between past and present โ€“ this isnโ€™t always done well in books, but Hepler handled it perfectly, making it feel fluid and smooth rather than disjointed or clunky. While there are some great horror elements to CRICKET HUNTERS, itโ€™s also an amazing coming-of-age tale, especially in the parts from when Cel and her friends were young kids. I loved how real the depiction of childhood was, from their imaginative games to their neighborhood adventures. Woven together with Celโ€™s grandmotherโ€™s spells and superstitions, all of the chapters taking place in the 1990s felt really magical and enchanting to me. In the present-day, the story felt more like a thriller โ€“ which I loved. Trying to solve the mystery in the present, while the mystery from the past unfolds alongside the main story, was a completely absorbing experience. I was swept away, and couldnโ€™t put the book down โ€“ I honestly only stopped reading for the half hour it took me to drive home that day! This was my first book by the author, so I didnโ€™t know what to expect at all writing-wise โ€“ and I loved it all! Heplerโ€™s writing is engaging and accessible while remaining completely original, from the twist ending to the beautiful blend of cultures and languages. This could easily be adapted into a movie, and I hope that someday it is, because the story is amazing and itโ€™d be incredible on screen โ€“ although Iโ€™m not positive that any director could capture the atmosphere and ambiance to Heplerโ€™s writing. Overall, if I could give this 6 stars, I would. It will absolutely be in my Top Books of 2019 recap (coming soon!), and itโ€™s one Iโ€™ll probably read again in the future. The publisher, Silver Shamrock Publishing, is putting some great stuff out recently โ€“ keep an eye on both Silver Shamrock & Jeremy Heplerโ€˜s books!

I read this because it was a recommendation in my book club and I didn't know what to expect. I really enjoyed it. It's more of a twisted whodunit than a supernatural book, which I thought it was going to be about. But I liked it enough to check out other books by the same author.

This book is about a group of friends who have known each other since childhood. One of the friends isn't as good as they seem and this cause conflict within them leading to a tragic ending for multiple people. It's not your traditional happy ending.

This is the first novel I've read by Jeremy Hepler, and I was absolutely enchanted from beginning to end! I love stories with witchcraft/ancestral/folk magic, and this story blends that element so well right from the beginning. And what a beginning... I had a feeling I was in for a wild ride, but wow, this was even cooler than I imagined.

Cel and Parker have a troubled marriage. Right off the bat, we're plunged into a painfully tense situation, made all the worse because it felt so real. I kinda thought we'd be mostly following that present day story, but oh did it expand in the best way.

I don't want to give out spoilers, but something completely unexpected happens to batter Cel and Parker's already fragile relationship. Cel thankfully has her abuela, Yesenia, as an ally and support--easily my favorite character in the book. Yesenia is no stranger to the darker side of magic, losing loved ones in the past to it but also weaponizing it to protect her remaining loved ones. And with what's coming, the ladies need all the tools in their arsenal.

There's also a dual storyline, a coming of age series of recollections from Cel and Parker as teens, during one crazy summer in the late '90s. These flashbacks are so important, each one revealing much about the characters and an old mystery, keeping the reader on their toes.

I waffled between loving or hating Cel and Parker (in the best ways!) most of the book, but I stayed fully invested and even empathized at times with some of their issues and insecurities. The characters are all wonderfully gray, not always likeable but always believable and compelling, which is what matters.

By the time the ending came, I was ready for something spectacular, and I got it. Such a great story from beginning to end. I recommend this to any horror fan.

Fantastic coming-of-age story, mix with two time lines. In the late 1990's as teenagers and later in 2010 as adults.

I couldn't get emotionally invested in the characters, but the plot itself grabbed me until the end. This was such an incredible story and definitely recommend this one. Be warn there is some violence on animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunt This Great Title Down
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2019
I thoroughly enjoyed Jeremy Helper's Bram Stoker Award nominated debut novel, The Boulevard Monster, so I'd been looking forward to reading Cricket Hunters for a while, and I'm pleased to say that this was another absorbing and satisfying read.
Cricket Hunters has a two timelines: 1998 and 2013. What impressed me is that the narratives in both timelines are equally compelling. In 1998 there is always a sense of dread - you can tell that it's building to something - especially when we learn from the 2013 narrative that one of the Cricket Hunters, Abby, went missing. There are multiple threads that could all end up in resulting in her appearance, and I enjoyed exploring those threads. When the truth was revealed, I was genuinely surprised.
The 2013 narrative is well linked to the past too. It's well plotted and the two narratives are nicely balanced allowing both parts of the story to develop.
The characters too are interesting and well-developed, if not all wholly likeable. Cel in particular comes across well. Even if you don't buy into her beliefs in witchcraft, the fact that she does is convincing throughout.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for future releases by Jeremy Helper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age thrill ride!
Reviewed in Canada on February 12, 2020
This story hooked my right from the beginning. I enjoyed the authors writing style and thought the transitioning from past to present flowed well. The twists and turns made me second guess what I thought was actually happening and who did what multiple times. Was there witchcraft involved? Paranormal events? Was it a murder/mystery? I guess you will just have to read it to find out ๐Ÿ˜.

Then there was the ending ๐Ÿ˜ณ. The ending of this book crept up behind me, tapped me on the shoulder and yelled BOO when I turned around! It surprised the heck out of me and I had to take a minute to just sit and ponder how clever it really was. Bravo Mr. Hepler ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘.

Hepler does a good job blending buldungsroman and horror here. Unravelling an awesome mystery from the past, he uses his now grown protagonists to tell an awesome - and seriously spooky - story!
