A Grand Illusion: How Progressive Christianity Undermines Biblical Faith Paperback – March 12, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
A GUIDE FOR EMBRACING BIBLICAL FAITH IN THE FACE OF AMERICAN PROGRESSIVISM
North American Christianity stands at a major crossroads. Hundreds of thousands of believers have begun to lose interest in apostolic Christianity: the faith of the Scriptures, the great witnesses and teachers of the faith, and the major creeds and confessions of Christianity.
The challenge? Theological progressivism.
A Grand Illusion exposes the dangers and contradictions of theological progressivism, revealing its North American, secular and elitist assumptions. It offers a full throttle defense of authentic Christianity. And it exposes the dim future of progressivism.
If you are tempted by progressivism, if your church or family members are starting to lean progressive, or if you simply need reassurance that apostolic faith is the real deal, read this book.
DAVID YOUNG is a senior pastor, author, speaker, television host, and a former teacher and visiting professor. He holds advanced degrees in religion, including a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He and his family live near Nashville, Tennessee.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2020I come from a traditional religious background, but it's important for me to examine my beliefs about Scripture and practice to ensure I am trusting and living as God wants. I appreciated David Young's discussion of authority of Scripture, cultural conformity in the church, and the preaching of sin, or lack thereof, in current-day pulpits. I'm unsure if there is an accurate, acceptable definition of Progressivism, but I appreciated reading David Young's ideas. I rewrote the Chapter 7 title in pencil in my book as "Holy Disciples and Social Activists?" wondering if that would be an acceptable replacement. I liked his Final Reflections chapter on how to respond to Progressivism. I finished the book still thinking that hermeneutics and interpretation of Scripture are the tough issues Christians must face. There was not much interpretation of Scripture in this book, but I am glad I read it and would highly recommend it to others.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2020This is a well-written book in which the author seeks to stall the slide of some evangelical churches into progressivism. He makes very well thought ought arguments on why Christians cannot pick and choose what parts of the Bible they will believe and obey. He also shows that a move towards evangelical progressivism is really just a gateway to leaving the faith altogether. He does not gloss over the difficulties that living a life faithful to God’s word will entail in modern America, but reminds us that Jesus promised His followers that the world would hate them, as the world hates Him.
I would highly recommend this book to any Christian struggling to balance a life dedicated to Christ against a life dedicated to social justice.
“Obedience is the best hermeneutic when it comes to the Bible.”

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2019One of the most needed books out today. A powerful book that confronts the false Christianity of the progressives. And makes clear the only message that can truly save us, by changing our hearts...The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2022A grand correction of the misguided definition of love the world tries to program people with. God sets that definition and other standards.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2024David Young is right on target in the early stages of the book, championing Orthodox Christianity over the modern-day, feel-good, make-it-up-as-you-go-along morals of Western progressive religiosity.
Indeed, throughout the first 120-130 pages I went mad with my highlighter, focusing on some of the bold, thoughtful statements:
"social justice theories often let individuals off the hook for individual sins"
"The scripture calls us not to simply be nice to each other, to tweet celebrity causes, or to protest disfavored public policies. Rather the Scripture calls for us to believe personally that Jesus is both Lord and Savior and to swear allegiance to him as King"
In the "Future of Progressive Christianity" chapter, he strays quite a bit, making the following statement
"there are cases where we must admit that progressivism was often more biblical than biblical Christianity"
Want to know what "cases" he specifically is referring too? You guessed it-Black Grievance. He goes on to state that we must "make amends for such past wrongs." He then goes on to condemn millions of Bible believing Christians throughout history for perceived racism, without evidence, based more on modern progressive morality than true Biblical theology.
In so doing, he becomes a mini-progressive himself, with more in common to BLM and Race/Black Grievance, whose beliefs are defined by critics of RGI(Race Grievance Industry) as:
"The RGI’s sole purpose is to profit from racial strife under the guise of pursuing racial peace. Its modus operandi is rooted in a lie that refuses to die: blacks are permanent victims of racism and no amount of effort will overcome it."
Unfortunately, Prof. Young wants us to buy into the progressive narrative that all Whites are somewhat racist and all blacks are victims. He would probably vehemently disagree with such a statement, but then why champion progressives as somehow “in the know” on racial causes throughout history. Is that really the true historical record? I don’t think so.
In the same chapter, Prof. Young takes a rather obvious shot at Donald Trump(!) and his supporters. Good grief! I am sure he is aware that there is no more hated group among Progressive Christians than Donald Trump and his supporters. What’s the point of this? If he wanted to show his objectivity, he could have done it without taking cheap shots.
Prof. Young runs a good race in exposing the dangers of Progressive Christianity. I’m just not sure if he ever crossed the finish line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone concerned about the state of evangelicalism in the 21st century.
This book clearly articulates the threat posed by so-called ‘Progressive Christianity’ for Biblical Christianity. A timely book for our age.
