About the Author

Author Tom Givens has more than four decades of experience as a firearms instructor, has carried a gun professionally in one form or another for 50 years, and spent 25 years in various aspects of law enforcement and specialized security work, with stints in street patrol and investigations. Givens also owned and operated a firing range and training center for more than 18 years. During that time, he oversaw the firing of about 1.5 million handgun rounds each year, with all types of handguns. He trained about 2,500 students each year, including private citizens, security personnel and police officers, military police, intelligence units and Special Forces detachments. He has been involved in armed confrontations both as a police officer and as a private citizen, and has seen firsthand how decent people, with proper training, can fight back and overcome criminal attacks.

I'm a super-new Firearms Instructor. When I started teaching, I was surprised to see just how many would flood our classes for the state-mandated Permit Classes, but how few would be available for follow-on training. Even something as simple as a free gun-cleaning clinic would only net maybe 5 or 6 students. After asking our students why they haven't booked a class, you get the usual responses. Usually a lack of spare time or spare money.

It's not even about making money. This is really a part-time gig, and I have a day job that does very well. I became a firearms instructor because if it wasn't for my instructors, I wouldn't have as much fun with firearms as I do now. The skills they taught me allow me to really enjoy shooting, and I get great satisfaction that my passion can save the life of a loved one or myself. You can't buy that kind of confidence!

Well, maybe now you can.

"Concealed Carry Class" by Mr. Givens does in print, what those gateway instructors did for me in person. It explained the complicated concepts and techniques in a way that's easy to understand and hard to forget.

So after I trained with Mr. Givens, I so trusted his experience and research, I gifted this book to my mother and aunt when they bought guns. You may ask yourself, "You're a firearms instructor. Why don't you train them yourself?" Because they changed my diapers, and so, they never listen to a word I say.

This book allows them to learn how to be responsible gun owners, at a low cost, at their own pace. Is it as good as live instruction? Nope. Is it better than nothing? You bet. Hopefully, they seek out live instruction after they finish the book. But even if they don't, it's a solid foundation, rooted in Mr. Givens' experience and research. It's actually geared toward the brand new gun owner. It answers questions that they never knew they had, and introduces them to the concepts and techniques they need to master in order to defend life with a handgun.

If you have always wanted to attend one of Tom Givens’ classes but didn’t have the time or the money to attend a class, then this book is an excellent and thorough review of what you would have gotten in one of his classes. And at a fraction of the cost.

If you have attended one of Tom’s classes, then I am sure you can hear him saying what is in this book. It is in Tom’s words and mannerisms and reflects his profound and extensive knowledge about concealed carry and handguns.

If you have never heard of Tom Givens, and especially if you are a new gun owner, then this book is the resource that you want to use to gain the knowledge to safely and effectively carry a concealed handgun.

This book provides an excellent background about both the hardware side of concealed carry (like guns, holsters, and ammunition) and maybe more importantly, about the “software” side of concealed carry. The “software” side of concealed carry is the mindset that you need to have to protect yourself and your loved ones. And that is what concealed carry is truly all about, protecting yourself and your loved ones.

Google guns, or firearm tactics, or best technique, or can I shoot someone if... and you will have several hundred thousand results. Unfortunately 99% of that info is not prefaced with " I am not a subject matter expert so you should probably not listen to my uninformed opinion." While there is a significant amount of reliable info available on the interwebs by true SMEs, how does the uninformed sort the BS from the material that not only will actually help one survive an event that requires the use of a defensive tool, but equally if not more importantly do so in a legal and moral way? I know the difficulty, because I was that person in the not to distant past. Tom Givens is at the top tier of experts on the topic of citizen self defense. If you are expecting a Red Dawn or zombiepocalypse type defensive scenario, I'm sure there are better resources out there than this book. However, if you fall in the category of the guy or gal who owns a weapon for defense of self, there are few better resources than this book. It is a great overview of all the aspects of owning and/or carrying a weapon as a private citizen. Including, but not limited to, mindset, legalities, tactics, and least importantly of all, gear. Tom's knowledge of the subject at hand is not only from his decades in law enforcement and teaching hundreds of classes, but also his commitment to being a life long student who is continuing to learn and refine this material on a continual basis from the other top minds on the subject.
