About the author

Stant Litore is the author of the nonfiction titles Lives of Unstoppable Hope, Lives of Unforgetting, Write Characters Your Readers Won’t Forget, Write Worlds Your Readers Won’t Forget, and the fiction titles Ansible, The Zombie Bible, Nyota’s Tyrannosaur, and Dante’s Heart. Best known for his weird fiction, alternate history, and science fiction, he holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Denver (as Daniel Fusch). His fiction has been acclaimed by NPR, has served as the topic for scholarly work in Relegere and Weird Fiction Review, and he has been hailed as “SF’s premier poet of loneliness.” He is fascinated by ancient languages, history, and religious studies. He does not currently own a starship or a time machine but would rather like to. He lives in Colorado with his three children and hides from visitors in the basement library beneath a heap of toy dinosaurs, tattered novels, comic books, incomprehensibly scribbled drafts, and antique tomes. He is working on his next novel, or several.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2019This book has little in the way of revolutionary new ideas on characters however what it does do better than almost all of the resources I've come across in my years of creating literature is outline specific unique practice exercises that will assist even the most veteran novelist in understanding and creating emotionally resonant characters. If you're the type that see's "here's something to try at home" in a book and immediately flips the page leave this one on the shelf. However, if you are one who enjoys writing prompts and critically thinking through writing problems and puzzles this is a fantastic guide to help you really pull back the curtains on your characters and give them that slightly more human element.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2022I've read tons of books on the craft of writing, and THIS is the one you need. So many craft books give vague advice on "getting into your character's head" but fail to really detail how to do that. Litore clearly explains how you can build complex, meaningful characterization that truly drives your stories. His writing techniques and exercises are fun and challenging and have transformed my stories.
Highly recommend it—especially for experienced writers who want to dig deeper into their stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2017Don't let the small page count fool you. This book may be pithy, but it's powerful. I found myself nodding along on almost every page, and when I wasn't, it was only because I was floored. (Especially at the part about making your character's greatest strength their greatest weakness.) I may come back and give this the final star once I've had the time to try a few more of the exercises, but for now, I'm looking forward to doing them once I'm finished with editing the current work-in-progress.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017This book is great! When I was making a buying decision, I wasn’t sure what to expect with 90 pages of information but what I found was 90 pages of pure knowledge after reading it from cover to cover. The exercises will definitely get your characters up to speed.
I gained valuable insights and knowledge not realized before I read the book in the following areas:
Dialogue and subtext, describing settings with verbs not adjectives, character details, idiosyncrasies character arcs and more. The exercises are fun and gets your imagination up and running.
I appreciate Stant Litore taking the time to share his knowledge and experience by writing and making his book available. Thank you Stant.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2016This book is everything, I seriously doubted it would help but then I read it and it's like finding the Holy Grail of writing characters information. Exercises include everything you need to do to help your character, and examples are as frequent as they are elaborate and helpful. I can't say enough for how this book changed the way I write and think about writing. I think my once well-rounded characters are now human in every way possible. Read for how to make your characters as complex as possible from a master on the subject. I really feel people will not just read my character but will feel with them too. This teacher really knows how to teach! Can't wait to use this book more!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2017Start makes a lot of demands, but if you meet even half of them you will have a very, very good yarn. Follow every suggestion and you may come up with something a little, or a lot, overwrought. Kind of like saying "In the long run you're either dead right or you're dead. Right?!" Stant has passion, and you will b well advised to read this book because it will show you where yours could use some, or it's passion is flimsy. This is a must-read and a must re-read book, because while every author's work is unique, almost every author needs to understand what passion is in a person or situation, and needs to tune his level. Usually up a notch.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2017Very informative. I filled pages front and back with ideas for my own WIP as I read this book. The only drawback was that it's only 90 pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2018I bought this book to help me polish the characters in my novel, and I enjoyed both Stant's tips and his exercises. There are lots of books on writing, but not a lot that get to the important basics so well, or provide such interesting, stimulating assignments. I'm looking forward to reading Write Worlds Your Readers Won't Forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and practical
This writing book is full of simple clear guidance, with lots of exercises to help you get a feel for what he is saying. The exercises add so much to this book guiding the want-to-be author to a deeper understanding of their characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenging and fascinating resource
I bought this as part of a class on writing characters, and it blew me away. It's brief, very well written, and includes writing exercises that are challenging, interesting, and educational. It may be too hard (and less useful) for complete beginners at fiction writing, but for people looking to expand their skills, it's fantastic.
