The founder of The Story Prize, Julie Lindsey, and its director, Larry Dark, created The Story Prize to address the lack of awards specifically for short story collections. Together they choose 3 finalists from the previous year’s publications, which are sent to 3 judges—an author, a bookseller or librarian, and a critic or editor—who, independently of one another, relay their choices.
The prize is then presented at an annual celebration in New York, where the finalists read from their books and then discuss their work. Excerpts from these interviews—or, in a few cases, the judges’ citations—introduce each story featured in in this landmark short story anthology.

"You don’t often get collections, or even anthologies where every story knocks you out, but I’ve been bewildered in the best way over each one [in The Story Prize] so far." —Lillian Li, author of Number One Chinese Restaurant
"Skillful distillations . . . A pleasure for students of the genre." —Kirkus Reviews
"A beautiful celebration of works from the famous and celebrated . . . to newer voices . . . Absorbing and contextualizing the strength of these stories takes time and effort and will reap great rewards." —Christopher John Stephens, PopMatters

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020I'm an avid short story reader and have read the Pen compilation, the annual Best collection and others. These were far and away the best I've read of late. Diverse points of view and styles, but all tired together by the quality of the writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2019This collection of stories is very uneven, which is the usual case in volumes such as this one. Most of the stories are average, a couple are virtually unreadable, and two or three are so good you will never forget them.
"The Postman's Cottage" is a very long story with a stunning development near the end which makes the journey of reading it well worthwhile.
I think "Nirvana is the best story in the book. It poses the question of what people would do if they lost a beloved president to a tragic death and found that he had seemingly returned to life. What if, Elvis-like, he was sighted in supermarkets, on street corners, or standing next to one person or another on a bridge, or in an open car or some other public place? What if he could still give inspirational speeches because he had somehow been reanimated with all his faculties intact?
"How She Remembers It" is a sad story about the possibility of redemption. It relates a twelve-year-old girl's last road trip with her dying father, and contains many poignant and memorable passages. In one, which has a similar sentiment to Keats' Grecian Urn poem, Lilly and her father have arrived at a small carnival too late for any of the rides, but not too late for some cotton candy. As they drive away, she reflects (p.328): "And it was enough, was more than enough, to have the pink cotton candy, and to be driving on, and to simply imagine, rather than really remember, what it would have been like, riding the Ferris wheel around and around, with the whole carnival to themselves."
There is also a portrait of a woman in the deepest grip of alcoholism. Lilly and her father find her sitting by the roadside next to her disabled vehicle, "clutching a nasty, rat-colored Chihuahua" (p.329) and working her way down a half-empty bottle of vodka. After that, we learn a lot more about the woman and none of it is positive or hopeful.
I recommend this book primarily for the few outstanding stories in it and for the acquaintance they offer with writers like Patrick O'Keeffe, Adam Johnson and Rick Bass.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2020The Story Prize: 15 Years of Great Short Fiction edited by Larry Dark is a celebration of the dazzling achievement of the short story form. Difficult to pick personal favorites but Jim Shepard's "The Zero Meter Diving Team," Danniyal Mueenudin's "Saleema," and Adam Johnson's "Nirvana" are simply beyond amazing.
