Anxiety among Catholic mothers is sky high. How do we teach our sons to be chaste when a sex-obsessed culture is ready to drag our boys into the pit at every turn? All we want to do is protect the innocence of our little ones and the honor of our teens, yet the snares of ubiquitous porn, hook-up sex, the LGBTQ juggernaut, and the devaluing of true manhood appear unavoidable. What’s a mother to do?
"With the candor of a close friend and the wisdom of an experienced mother, Leila Miller demystifies a subject that is overwhelming to many people."--Jennifer Fulwiler (best-selling author, host of The Jennifer Fulwiler Show on SiriusXM)

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2019This book is written from a mom to a mom but is full of inspiring words on how to navigate our boys through todays society. Theres even input from boys and young adults on what they would tell others who struggle with chastity today. I'm so glad this book exists and adheres to catholic doctrine. It doesnt water down the realities our boys face or how to talk about it with them. Very straightforward book that's easy to read!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2019Loved the ease of reading this book and the very practical suggestions. Also liked the answers from the boys of different ages. A must read for all moms of boys.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2019Love Leila's work. This book is so needed today!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018Not a bad book, but comes very much from the female perspective. Males reading this would pick this up immediately.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019In today’s highly sexualized world, is it possible to raise chaste Catholic men? Leila Miller argues that it is. While nothing is guaranteed in parenting due to our children’s free will, Miller offers no-nonsense advice for moms in the second edition of Raising Chaste Catholic Men: Practical Advice, Mom to Mom.
In the foreword, Fr. Dwight Longenecker argues that young men need a firm foundation in catechesis, self-discipline, and chastity. This book helps “young men navigate the perils of popular culture, pornography, gender confusion, and the complicated adventure of becoming strong, vital, and dynamic men.”
Miller is the mother of six sons and two daughters. In these pages she shares what she has learned on the journey. She wants you to know that “God has adequately equipped you to be an effective and fruitful parent. He has given you all the tools you need, and, with His grace, you can help your boys to be who He created them to be.”
This book is designed for Catholic mothers who take their faith seriously, love God, are faithful to the teachings of the Magisterium, and accept the full Deposit of Faith. Miller maintains there are three keys to raising morally responsible kids: 1) Moral formation is the top priority; 2) What parents teach must make sense; and 3) Nothing is off limits for discussion.
Parents have a duty and obligation to teach their children about sex. If we don’t do it, the world will. We need to have strong relationships with our children so that they will feel comfortable discussing uncomfortable topics with us.
Miller offers good logically-based answers to questions our children might raise about sex, chastity, birth control, abortion, masturbation, same-sex relationships, and transgenderism. She emphasizes our need to raise our sons as boys. They should not be raised the same as their sisters. Boys and young men need battles to win. They need to “play the hero warrior, fight to protect the innocent, and defeat the bad guy.” We also need to encourage their God-given desire to marry and have children.
Miller’s take on pop culture is refreshing. So many Catholic parents work to protect their children from all aspects of popular culture. While Miller acknowledges that her approach may not resonate with all readers, she does allow her children access to popular music, movies, and video games. Instead of banning all these items, she has conversations about them and encourages their responsible use. She argues that we need to be “in the world, not of it” and that popular culture is part of that world.
There is also a section in the book with advice from young men who are working to be chaste in our world and an afterward by Anthony Esolen directed toward young men struggling with same-sex attraction.
And what if, despite your best efforts, your sons make poor choices? Miller advises that you “continue to show affection and love to your child, no matter what he has done” without “accepting, condoning, enabling, or encouraging his sins.” Your job is to pray for your children and work on your own holiness.
Raising Chaste Catholic Men should be on the reading list of every Catholic mom bringing up boys. It tackles some of parenting’s toughest topics with wisdom, understanding, and practical suggestions.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2019Sometimes you read a book that is not only a page turner, but you feel compelled to highlight, star, circle and underline not just sentences, but one paragraph after another. Then you can’t contain your excitement with just making line art in the book so you wake your husband from his restful sleep (very) late at night by poking him in his side and politely ask/ demand that he listen to just one more paragraph.
Raising Chaste Catholic Men: Practical Advice, Mom to Mom by popular Catholic blogger, Leila Miller, got my pen moving, kept my eyes open during late night readings and filled my heart and soul with truth and gratitude. I am so grateful Miller took on this project about issues that are so counter cultural and I’m happy to share my thoughts on it.
Miller’s book will bring truth, clarity and guidance to parents who seek to raise chaste, virtuous, masculine men so our young men will be equipped to put on their armor to fight the spiritual battle that rages against them in our secular world. But, don’t let the title fool you. This book is not just for mothers, but also fathers, priests, religious, youth ministers, grandparents and realistically anyone who raises boys or teaches them can benefit from the wealth of information and solid advice that Miller gives succinctly and charitably.
Miller informs and encourages the reader with wisdom and sincerity and as a mother, I felt her book gave the boost of confidence I needed to continue the long journey of raising a chaste Catholic son. Reading Miller’s book will give you the encouragement you need even when things go wrong and the young men in your life make choices that are contrary to what God and your heart and soul desires. If this does happen, Miller’s Rule #1 is “Do not freak out!” I love this rule because there’s a lot to freak out about when raising chaste Catholic men. Miller’s book will leave you with less and less freak out sessions and much more confidence to tackle subject areas that Miller herself has faced as she and her husband have successfully raised some of their own chaste Catholic men.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2021This is a fantastic book. An easy read and felt like having a conversation with a friend over coffee. Leila covers a wide variety of topics and provided gems of wisdom to share with our sons. I bought this book a while ago and I am so glad I finally picked it up. Perfect info and just the right time for my family and me. I also really liked the quotes from the young men, toward the back of the book. Valuable insight. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2019This book reads very much like a conversation between moms. I was especially interested in the chapter where she had the responses from chaste Catholic men in their teens and twenties. I think I will have my teen sons read that chapter, as it had lots of practical advice directed toward the young men. The rest of the book is directed toward the moms, and how to dialogue with your children about sex and God's beautiful plan for chaste living. It's a quick read about conversations parents and children need to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, light read
I enjoyed reading this book and thought it was a great, simple, encouraging guide to talking to developing young men about chastity. I did find it a bit annoying that Miller would throw in political messages about Trump, Obama, etc. but it doesn't ruin the book.
