Murder at the Nightwood Bar (A Kate Delafield Mystery Series, 2) Paperback – January 1, 2011
Purchase options and add-ons
The investigation is far from a simple matter. Kate uncovers shocking facts about the brief life of the murdered young lesbian. She finds her road to the killer obstructed by Dory’s uncooperative, judgmental parents, the waning interest of her own partner, and most frustrating of all, the open hostility of women who should be her allies―the lesbians who frequent the Nightwood Bar. Kate’s emotional equilibrium is further disturbed by her powerful attraction to one of those women, the enigmatic Andrea Ross.
Who killed Dory Quillin? And why? Accompany Kate Delafield on her electrifying, emotional journey to the answer, an answer you will never forget.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2009This was a very well written crime novel. It has the interesting detective and a murder with a great many questions. The personal details of our lead character, are kept to a good minimum, allowing us to pursue the killer and not become entangled in the Dr. Phil problems of the lead characters (which is often the price we pay when indulging in the lesbian detective novel, or any female detective novel for that matter). This quality of crime novel is not easy to find among the Dectives of this genre. There are those of us who crave good crime novels and it would seem that many authors labor under the delusion that we are also looking to indulge in the psychological angst and the romantic prowess of the characters. I personally outgrew romance novels when I got my driver's license. Thanks to this author for a very well orchestrated mystery.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2015I hated AMATEUR CITY, I wanted to score this one 5 stars but its not all the way there, as good as it is. That said, I probly wont read any other books by this writer. I get her bent. This is a group hug, hugs are swell but I want noire. Forrest has talent but needed to put a leash on the hugs.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2019Great story with several interesting characters. Excellent insight into police work and being a lesbian. The ending really pulls at your emotions, so much so that i was in tears. The revelation of how special the victim was, the emotion of the killer and the surprises for Kate. I look forward to the next books in the series and hope that Kate will find someone special to share her life with in a meaningful way. Like real life, it doesn't happen quickly.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2013The second Kate Delafield mystery shaped up even better than the first one. I'm just a little groaning inwardly when Kate has one of her few self-deprecating moments, admonishing herself for not seeing some "obvious" clue that totally was not obvious to anyone, reader included; otherwise I feel this is a very fluid, coherent work of literature. I'm eager to dive into the rest of them. I liked the description of the pride parade at the end of this book... I felt very much the same the first time I experienced the singular emotion of belonging only a crowd of many like minded people can provide. Very impressed.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2014I read this book before I read the first book in the kate delafield mystery series, amateur city, and for that I'm bummed. Regardless, this was a wonderful surprise. It led me to read all but two in the series in one weekend, I've just began Hancock Park. A very rich mystery, made all the more amazing because of its lesbian lead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once again
Once again, Katherine V Forrest has given us a book with a plot that holds the attention and weaves in the lesbian strand without it dominating or detracting from the story.
Kate Delafield is a great character and her needs as a woman are not allowed to dominate the plot. I look forward to meeting her again. I am surprised she is not " out " as she is such a strong woman. Maybe next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the series.
I have read the whole series, and own all of them except this one, so I got it, and reread the books up to this one.
The series holds up well. Kate Delafield is a great character and the Nightwood Bar is a safe hangout for the lesbian crowd.
A 19 year old is living in a Volkswagen camper and is murdered. In order to solve the case, Kate has to get accepted as a regular at the bar, where the women are very suspicious of cops.
A good mystery with really good, believable characters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit naff.
There are a lot of mediocre novels out there for gay women, but usually either they have a bit of sizzle or a half decent plot. For me, unfortunately, this had neither. There are much better easy reads to pass the time.
