The War of the Copper Kings: Greed, Power, and Politics Paperback – September 15, 2002
Purchase options and add-ons
Sound familiar? That was the great battle for Butte, Montana, at the dawn of the 20th century when it was the richest hill on earth. Copper was the treasure, eagerly sought for wiring the modern world, and the hard rock below Butte was riddled with thick veins of the precious metal. Those who controlled the copper could make billions of dollars, the fortune sought by three men who fought for Butte’s mineral wealth with greed and generosity, cruelty and compassion, cowardice and courage.
In this astonishing battle, they used their fabulous wealth to buy courts, newspapers, politicians, banks, police, and anything and anyone that could help them and hinder their opponents. To get what they wanted, their money flowed like snowmelt through the mile-high city and eventually reached the nation’s capital. All the while the miners toiled thousands of feet below ground in tunnels dug with blasting powder, picks, and shovels. And sometimes, backed by rival copper kings, they also battled, with fists and dynamite, either on the streets of Butte or far below the surface.
At this time, Butte was the largest city between Minneapolis and Portland, and it was a wide-open town, born only recently in the rugged Rocky Mountains. Illustrated by rare historical photos, this book tells the story of Butte and the copper kings, a story of raw human drama and timeless historical significance.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2011Having grown up in Montana, I have always wanted to read this book because I wanted to see how the Anaconda Co. took possesion of the copper mine in Butte. My parents had read it when we moved to Montana, but wouldn't let me read it due to my age at the time. This book captivates you from the start and it is hard to put down. It really grasps the West at that time and how hard it was back then. This is one book I will keep and read again.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2012I always wondered about the origin of western movies bent for violence. The War of the Copper Kings provides an excellent insite into the real wild old West. Within the opening chapters of the book, the author tells of bad guys taking over the town and then the local folks deciding they have had enough of the bad guys, forming a vigilance committee, arresting the bad guys, trying them and then hanging them. That's the wild west of the movies.
The book never lets up on tales of conflict between the good guys, the bad guys and the filthy rich guys. The book is easy reading and very intersting. I decided to read the book after a couple of visits to Butte. I had no reference into why there would be so many head frames in one location until reading the book and realizing what a wild and whooly place Butte was in its hey day. The Butte of 2012 really is ghost of its former glory.
The book was originally written while many of the actual characters of the mining camp days were still living, albiet, as elderly gentlemen with vivid memories of wilder days. The author does an outstanding job of making the conflicts between the three wealthiest Butte developers, Daly, Clark and Heinze come alive.
If you are looking for an interesting history of making wealth in the gilded age, this is an excellent book on a small part of the wealth of America at the beginning of the 20th century. This book also ties into the greed and dark history of the Standard Oil Company. For more on the tycoons of this era, I would also reccommend "The Tycoons" by Charles Morris who briefly touches on some of the relationships of the tycoons and Butte's history. The Tycoons: How Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J. P. Morgan Invented the American Supereconomy
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020This is a great book to learn and understand termination of Montana. I think the recent movement of people should read this to gauge how Montana's are built and made. I think it could actually help resolve many of the issues Montana sees today.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2023Have one mine in AZ once owned by William Clark. Heard he was a scoundrel and others say he was a hero this book helps clears that up in the context of the times.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2014I saw a reference to this book on a Maverick episode. I looked it up and it seemed interesting. I was pleasantly surprised it was in Kindle. It was only a couple of dollars and I bought it. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read and very informative. It was part history and part biographical and just a very compelling read. One story in the book made me laugh so hard I nearly ruptured myself. That alone was worth the two dollars or so.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2017I grew up in Butte, and learned my local history from this book when I was young. It's a perfect young adult history, even with its distortions and flaws. If you're a scholar there are better works, but if you're just curious about a wild period in Montana history, this is a book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2022Too much rambling on about trivial stuff. Author orobable did not know all the facts and had to fill up pages just to sell it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2017Visited Butte about two weeks ago and wanted to follow up by learning more. This book will do that! Fast paced, exciting, but mostly you will walk away with a firm understanding of who the people were and the hardships they endured. Great read.
