- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024You can never go wrong with a Pardey book, but this one is particularly gripping. The case for heaving-to is alive and well in these pages with many many stories and anecdotes. A very fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2013I've been intending to read this for years. Finally did, thanks to it being on Kindle.
I've heard and read many discussions of their techniques, but reading it first hand made their techniques much more clear to me. Heaving-to and lying-to on a sea anchor are often thought of as different techniques, but their preferred technique, of heaving-to and using a sea anchor to reduce drift rate and fore-reaching, combines the two methods. And, their thousands of sea miles are a testament to its practical effectiveness.
As a sailing instructor, I also strongly agree with them that heaving-to should be taught as a basic sailing skill. I'm surprised by the number of experienced sailors I meet who do not know how to heave-to. Not only is it convenient for when you just need to stop and have lunch (...or take a nap, or tuck in/shake out a reef, or...), but it could save your life in a storm (I've ridden out a number of full-on storms and many intense squalls hove-to).
While hove-to for lunch, not a storm, on a J-26 recently, I found myself watching the slick and thinking about the Pardey's techniques. The fin keeled J-26 was slowly fore-reaching out of it's turbulence slick. No big deal in the calm conditions we were in, but would have been interesting to deploy a make-shift sea anchor and see how she behaved .... definitely have to experiment with that soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2010I have raced and cruised the lower St-Lawrence and the Great Lakes, but never in REALLY heavy weather. Knowing this WILL happen, I have always felt unprepared (with all due respect to Adelard Cole) and uncertain as to what I would do, beyond shortening sail, and battening things down.
The tactics, equipment, and techniques in this book are clear, easy to understand, and executable by people who have not spent their entire lives on the water circumnavigating, and who do not have a full race crew aboard. A revelation which answered most of my fears and questions about my boat's strengths and weaknesses, what equipment to have, where to get it, how to install/rig it, and when and how to use and adjust it.
It also has great tips about what my crew and I will undergo in terms of fatigue, sleep, food, morale, & watch-keeping, to survive extreme conditions and maybe still love sailing.
This book is well-written, well-illustrated, and easy to read - in my view a must for anyone going beyond day-sailing. Available through AMAZON.com it has given me the confidence to believe I can be a better, safer sailor in any weather.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2024I got this for my then boyfriend at the time who is into sailing. When talking with him I assessed that he really needed to learn more safety especially when it came to storms. I researched the best books about storm safety and this came up. I skimmed the book and read some good information that would be really helpful. The then boyfriend liked the book because it was about sailing so it was a win.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024If you have a sailboat and are worried about handling it when Mother Nature comes out to play, this is a book you need to have.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2010When reading "Storm Tactics" one understands how much the subject of heaving to is neglected in most of the press and books about weathering storms. The Pardeys use a remarkably approachable tone, and even though they pack an impressive list of references - including Sir Peter Blake- they never try to impress you: they simply want you to learn, not gawk.
The knowledge they transmit with such talent is also quite mind blowing and despite decades of sailing I can not wait to go try the techniques they recommend.
Thank you, Lin and Larry, this is an outstanding work that belongs to any well equipped sailboat's book shelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2013The Pardeys have been sailing around the World for a long time. And they have a lot of friends and acquaintances that also have an extensive sailing experience.
Although you might never find yourself sailing in the wide open ocean, or braving a tropical hurricane, the tactics discussed and explained her can help you make the most of a sudden squall, or a cold front, that might catch you while sailing close to home.
This third edition has been completely updated and enhanced. This book is alive and improving with each edition.
If you're into serious sailing, this is a must read, and learn, and practice. Heaving-to is a maneuver not usually taught or practiced in these times of "modern" boats and weather predictions. Yet still you'll need these skills.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2023Great book in details and great pictures and so clear to read.

Very informative and very useful strom management infos. The experiences of the authors make it absolutely sufficient information source. If I bought it again, I would choose the classic, not the kindle version.
