Purchase options and add-ons
This book can wake up your inner explorer; tap into your curiosity and help you to discover all five boroughs like a roaming detective; a seeker of stories and collector of local secrets. Over the past decade, Grall's distinct style and curation has already helped inspire and guide over a million monthly readers on Messy Nessy Chic, the cult online magazine that became a bona fide lifeline for the internet's most curious minds. Guidebooks are often organized by borough, or by the times of day, or categorized by activities that tourists are expected to do. But as you'll start to realize, Messy Nessy Chic doesn't travel by the rules. These chapters are created around a person's mood and the cards that life has dealt us on any given day. Because when you wake up in New York City, a new adventure awaits... Also available: Don't be a Tourist in Paris ISBN 9781916430921

About the author

I’m often asked, how do you find these places? The truth is, I’m a bit of an escapist. I don’t walk past an intriguing door without checking if a real-life Narnia isn’t hiding on the other side.
Seven years ago, I packed up my life in London and never looked back. Paris became my muse, my mentor, a source of nostalgia for eras I had never lived through. This city has inspired me to curate what has become a cult online destination today, acknowledged, featured and followed by major media entities and international brands.
Apparently, I have an eye for the off-beat, the unique and the chic, but Paris? I guess you could say I developed a sixth sense for Paris.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020I normally wouldn’t review a travel guide but this was just so good and fun to read. I am a Californian who has enjoyed visiting New York for the last 25 years. I have made an effort to find hidden gems in food, shopping, and experiences. I was hoping this book would provide interesting things I had not heard of and it exceeded expectations. There are many ideas in here that I look forward to experiencing and many that weren’t for me but interesting nonetheless. I will definitely be reading the Paris book next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2020It’s fun to spend time with this book even , even if you don’t have imminent plans to visit the city, but even better if you are there. So many cool, interesting and out of the way spots, and tidbits of culture and history. I only wish it had an app for in the go inspirations. It’s definitely not a pocket guide!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024I have at least 10 books about New York, and this one is the best, full of great places and hidden gems.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2019Very nice, there are many places that I did mot know in NewYork
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2020It was a present for my daughter for Christmas. She asked for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2020I bought the first book on Paris on a trip there for the first time. While some of the information was a bit dated even 2 years after publishing, we did get a couple good cafes and tips out of it and I liked the layout and semi-simplicity of the organization. Also the size of the book was nice because it wasn't a hassle to carry around the city.
The NY edition came out and as a more frequent NYC traveler, I decided to buy it. Kind of dissapointing ... LOTS more infornation packed into the NYC book but a lot of it reads more like Atlas Obscura than a usable guidebook. Kind of tidbits of odd travia and facts. The book is much thicker and more awkward and heavy to carry, so we did not really bring it with us the way we did with the Paris edition. It's also so full of so-so info. that we found it a lot worse organized and it was harder to find information on the areas we were in than the other book. The neighborhood guide is nice but only a page and a half on Greenwich Village and Hardly any info. on Soho but much more on Brooklyn.
We are 35 years old and felt this book was more geared towards a 22 year old hipster who was living in NYC for the summer than someone who was visiting or older than 30. There were less pictures as well, which was kind of a bummer because you can't really see what you are getting and cross referencing places by pulling them up on a website kind of defeats the purpose of a hard copy book.
There was a lot of info. in the book on spots I'd never go ... one page talked about what seemed to be male prostitution designed for a female customer and then all the little pop up parties and stuff will likely be outdated, like the Paris book. Some of the sites are unaccessible to people and are included more as a factoid ... not sure how knowing that something is there hidden away is helpful to me. Again, this book is half travel guide and half Atlas Obscura book.
If you are into countless tea shops, second hand boutiques, antique shopping and curious facts ... and are a 23 year old female living in NYC for the first time, you might really enjoy this. If you are a 30+ year old someone vistining the city and looking to go off the beaten path but not likely to want to eat dinner in a stranger's kitchen with a group of people ... maybe not for you.
I did three stars because its hard to be a writer/content creator in this day and age. Honestly though, after reading through the book once, I gave it to someone as it was 90% useless for our needs. Hopefully the next city guide book created by the author will be more in the style of the DBT Paris with less 'oddity factoid' info. and more travel content and more pictures.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2019This is the best guidebook I have ever read (and my first review I have been spired to write) for my favorite city in the world! Unlike other guides it isn’t split up geographically but instead it is “created around a person’s mood and the cards life has dealt us on any given day.” Chapter 5 is titled “I’m not a hipster but...” and includes places to shop to look like a New Yorker and social clubs. Many entries are written almost as a personal biography of the city itself, which is perfect for a city that never sleeps and feels very much alive. My favorite entries include hidden entrances, unadvertised event locations and secret code words to get into exclusive places. You cannot skip a line of the text as you may miss the most interesting part. Check out page 272 regarding the Jet Blue terminal at La Guardia but read all of it or you will miss the best part. My mom ordered this for my birthday straight from the author and I left for NYC two weeks later. My daughter and I are having so much fun finding all of the puzzle pieces. I may need to move here for a few years to experience all of it, seriously considering it. I mean look at all the post it’s and I am still two chapters from finishing it.
