Gr 2–5—Following Smart About Sharks and Mad About Monkeys, Davey now lends his signature style to the world of cats, large and small. Davey's illustrations and design are phenomenal. Stylized images, done in a color palette of oranges and greens on heavy matte paper, evoke a chic, retro vibe. The artwork is so engaging that the text almost seems secondary, but in fact, a surprising amount of information is stuffed into 40 pages. Davey begins with introductory data such as what cats eat (anything with meat, even turtles and snakes) and basic feline anatomy (this section includes a clever diagram of retracted cat claws). Information gets more detailed and species-specific further on in the book. One memorable spread features a scale diagram of a human next to eight different cats (tigers are huge!). An index provides species nomenclature and world region. The only information that is slightly confusing is a chart of cat lineage. Readers looking for an accurate evolutionary tree may come to the conclusion that pumas are descended from modern tigers because of the layout. Overall, this book is a strong introduction to the cat family that can also serve as a great jumping-off point for further investigation about lesser-known types such as the caracal and jaguarundi. Colorful, fact-filled, fun book about cats.
Crazy About Cats is a book that's perfect for any child that loves felines. It has a unique art style that's a bit cartoony, but still very detailed and covers all kinds of topics, from their biology, behaviours and diversity to their dietary choices (nothing held back here), weird facts and their place in world mythology. There's a bit of randomness to it really, but it's all about cats, so that holds it all together. The book itself is beautifully illustrated, although the text is probably a bit too advanced to very young children, so this is probably one you'll want to read to them. This really reminds me of a library book I would have checked-out as a child (that is actually high-praise). The large format, page feel, even the smell has a library-like quality to it. It's truly a wonderful book for any child who wants to learn more about cats (in general).

    This book is beautiful. However, it does have one major issue and I want to address that first. It is listed for children ages 5-10. Most 10 year olds could not read this book on their own, not to mention 5 year olds (for the record I am a teacher that works with children everyday including 10 year olds). The vocabulary is just too difficult. "Sweltering, desolate, obligate, domesticated, versatile and athleticism" are just a few of the words found in the first half of the book.

    With that being said, this is still a fantastic and extremely educational book. If your child is 5-10, you could read this book along with them and it would be extremely beneficial. For independent reading, I would say the age range is more 10-12+.

    The book has fantastic art work that includes different types of cats, a diagram of the evolution of cats and even a scale that compares the size of different cats and the size of a human. The content also includes mythology, which cat has the best "...." (loudest roar, longest jump,etc.), anatomy, what cats eat, lineage, and so much more. It basically has everything you could possibly want to know about cats.

    The book is very well done and very educational. Despite the age range being off in my opinion, it is a book that is worth reading. It could even be an interesting table book for adults. I highly recommend this book!
