Purchase options and add-ons

First published as a Monumenta Nipponica monograph in 1971, this impressive study chronicles the Hōgen Incident of 1156, the abortive coup d'état that marked the emergence of the military class as a political power in Japan. After being unavailable for years, this photo-reprint of the original edition contains not only the complete English translation of the work, but also virtually all that is needed for fully understanding it: footnotes, essays on the subject matter, appendices with references to other chronicles and histories, and a table of episodes from the various texts.

A rare first-hand explanation of the events that led to the War of the Heike. The prose is not too archaic to shun newcomers to medieval Japanese history. It is helpful to have some background knowledge of Minamoto/Genji and Taira/Heike before jumping into this but if you're perusing this book then you probably already do.

The Hogen Monogatari is a prequel to the Heike Monogatari (Tale of the Heike), a Japanese classic of world literature. More correctly, it is the prequel to the prequel. Like its epic counterparts in the West, the Heike Monogatari starts en medias res. Reading the Hogen Monogatari along with its 'continuation', the Heiji Monogatari, gives ample background to the characters and the political situation of the Heike Monogatari.

Though not the classic that the Heike Monogatari is, the Hogen Monogatari is an enjoyable, even memorable, read. As much legend as history, it fades from the semi-historical to the anecdotal and back again. It tends more toward the confucian than the more Buddhist HM, and so is more didactic than profound, but never painfully so.
