Seven Pillars of Wisdom is one of the major statements about the fighting experience of the First World War'. Lawrence's younger brothers, Frank and Will, had been killed on the Western Front in 1915. Seven Pillars of Wisdom, written between 1919 and 1926, tells of the vastly different campaign against the Turks in the Middle East - one which encompasses gross acts of cruelty and revenge and ends in a welter of stink and corpses in the disgusting 'hospital' in Damascus. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is no 'Boys Own Paper' tale of Imperial triumph, but a complex work of high literary aspiration which stands in the tradition of Melville and Dostoevsky, and alongside the writings of Yeats, Eliot and Joyce.

After reading some of the reviews I was not at all sure how this read would turn out but I very much enjoyed T.E. Lawrence as an author. I generally found this a very interesting insight into what was going on during the Arab Revolt, something I have been curious about ever since seeing 'the movie'. I am contemplating going to Jordan to visit 'Lawrence' sites so this is on the reading list and I am glad to have read it. I could scarcely put this book down, however, for an American, it is a little difficult at times deciphering the British style verbiage of 100 years ago. An American dictionary is not always of help given Lawrence's 'turn-of-phrase' every now and again, but this is part of the charm of T.E. Lawrence I suppose. The intelligence and both mental and physical toughness of the man comes through very powerfully in his writing. I regard this as one of the most interesting and important books I have ever read and can easily understand why it continues in print.

In an interview, actor Peter O'Toole, who played Lawrence of Arabia in the 1962 epic film, recommended T.E. Lawrence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" which the actor reread years after starring in the movie. O'Toole suggested Lawrence's mastery of the English language was masterful. O'Toole said he had read the book before the film, and reread it years later and viewed the writing from en entirely new perspective As young person, I also started the "Seven Pillars" right after the film premiered, but lost interest. I had not lived enough life to grasp the power of the story. Coming back to it some sixty years later, I have to agree with O'Toole that the writing is riveting, raw, and unexpectedly fine. Historians take some exception to Lawrence's recollections and embellishments as historians are wont to do, but it does not take away from the craft of Lawrence's writing. After all, he was there and this is his take on the events.

Seven pillars of wisdom is by far the best written book I have ever read. This is an account of T.E Lawrence, and his experiences in the air revolt during World War I. This book is wonderfully written and very detailed. You really can feel what it must’ve been like to live among the Bedouin and live in a harsh desert environment. It is a story of every day survival adventure, war, death, and political intrigue. I’ve read and reread this book many times, and always focus on something new that I had read over previously I take this on trips, on my mini camping trips that I take and often read a passage or two during my trips and reflect on a man who really came into his own as a master tactician, a master politician, and a Great warrior.

I read this over the course of Christmas break, and was astonished at the skill with which Lawrence writes. A true master at prose, and a wonderful storyteller--I actually laughed a few times at funny moments. Very informative, too, with regards to all that was occurring in the Middle East at the time.

Colonel T.E. Lawrence, aka, “Lawrence of Arabia,” narrates his adventures in organizing and fighting Arab guerilla force that battled the Turks in World War I. In so doing he met and overcame many obstacles that ultimately enabled his unit to effectively support General Allenby’s conventional attack that defeated both the Turks and their German allies. His is a little-known story that deserves to be told.
To accomplish his task Lawrence first had to assimilate himself into the tribal culture that was Arabia of 1916-1918. He learned to speak Arabic, rode a camel, wore Arab garb and ate Arab cuisine. By doing so he convinced the tribes to put away their centuries old feuds and unite to fight a common enemy, the Turks.
Next, he battled overwhelming obstacles such as the vast, inhospitable terrain that was Arabia where supplies such as weapons, food and that most precious of all commodities, water were scarce. Taking all these factors into consideration he made use of all of them and effectively used them to his advantage against the enemy. His campaign against Turkish supply lines serves as a textbook for unconventional warfare today!
The mission of U.S. Army Special Forces is to recruit and train indigenous forces and, on occasion conduct direct action missions. British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill organized his Commando units for that purpose in World War II. President John F. Kennedy did likewise in Vietnam. Conceivably Lawrence was the inspiration for them both. He could rightfully be called the first Commando and/or the first Green Beret!
The campaign in Middle East is a little-known chapter of the first world war. Seven Pillars shows how guerilla forces can greatly assist conventional units. Recent conflicts in the Middle East have spurred renewed interest this coordination that began over a century ago. His is a great read that has great historical significance and contains valuable lessons for today!

T.E. Lawrence was a visionary and did his best to bring his vision to fruition. His insight into the Arab cultures and differences had many lessons. Many of these went unheeded and a different history of these lands and people has played out in a sad way. A great book I have given away about 9 copies.

This book reads like travel log a personnel view of the Arab Revolt and full of thought-provoking ideas. While reading it one feels the heat of the desert and the lifestyles of the Bedouin. Lawrnce bears his soul for all to see.

Would just like to lead off with absolutely amazed at the speed this delivery has came, did not expect til late this week and came today (the next day) a pleasant surprise and added to the excitement of reading. First things first, I am 26 years of age and have read military books and memoirs from all sorts of foreign nations and military figures through history because I was never truly taught a lot about the wars in my normal schooling however additional to this is the fact that the UK will only address in everyday schooling is what it was like in trenches during ww1 and maybe touch into the poems that were written to go alongside it, so to say my education is being taught a complete different side of a war that pretty much shaped modern Europe and I knew nothing about it upsets me completely because the true fact is I just thought "Lawrence of Arabia" was a film about an Englishman helping the Arabians with the ottomans being an issue to their country, NOT the actual fictional man and planning he did to rebel against the ottomans trying to take over the country for it's economical gems. Additionally the fact this man is such a controversial issue in this country and that people are not being taught about him and what he did is a serious let down in modern schooling. This all being said the book gives a true insight as best he can remember about he journey and the battles he fought, the military planning etc. Everything you'd expect from an officer of the British military and the education he possessed, credit where credit is due the man states on the very first page that most is done via memory and what he can't fully recall is a slight twist on fiction. Not too far into this and I already feel immersed in the time and experiences he's describing. It would definitely be a book I'd recommended mainly because memoirs tend to be worth a read and even if there is a twist of fiction with each one, but if you want to get to know more about the man behind the legend of Lawrence of Arabia pick it up.
