Georgian Jewellery 1714-1830 Paperback – October 8, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
- A thoroughly researched look at the jewellery of the time, offering good basic knowledge for the beginner and new facts for the expert
- New and/or little-known facts about the techniques, styles and materials of the age
- The only book solely on the Georgian period, and the largest ever catalogue of the diverse range of eighteenth century jewellery
- Interesting portraits of characters of the period and their influence on the jewels of the time, with some contemporary gossip, outrageous cartoons and period fashion tips
- Emphasis on jewellery that has been on the open market in recent years, rather than just unobtainable museum pieces Georgian Jewellery is a celebration of the style and excellence of the eighteenth century, and of the ingenuity that produced such a wealth of fabulous jewelry
Heavy academic tomes have already been written about the period, but this book examines it in a more colorful and accessible way. The book aims to show that Georgian jewelry is not only the stuff of museums and safe boxes, but that it can be worn as elegantly and fashionably today as it was 200 years ago.
Much disparate information about the jewelry has been gathered together and the period is brought alive by portraits and character sketches of famous Georgians in their finery, fashion tips, gossip, and some rather outrageous cartoons of the time, as well as fascinating recently discovered facts. With information on how to identify, buy and repair pieces, this sumptuously illustrated volume contains the largest single catalogue of 18th Century jewelry.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2011I ordered this book on little information to go by, and am thrilled with it. Though it spanned over 100 years, most books blip right past the Georgian era. It's extra heavenly therefore to have a whole book devoted to the subject, and one that is well written and beautifully photographed as well. Many/most images are color - including portraits and archival illustrations. I'd consider it a reference work, as it is more than just pretty photos. The authors are jewelry dealers and experts - I think their research on that subject can be trusted. I was really pleased with the amount and quality of the information provided in that regard, especially as so many jewelry books focus on being price guides (which this is not) and include little or no text. While the entire period is covered, I'd say the emphasis is on the latter half, the Regency-George IV's rule in particular - which is the time period I am most interested in. The chapters cover daytime jewelry; evening jewelry; romantic jewelry (including the fascinating eye portraits, or "lover's eye" jewelry, hair jewelry, acrostic jewelry, including those lovely "regard" rings, and other types of sentimental jewelry); and mourning jewelry. In the final chapter, they discuss tips and pitfalls of collecting Georgian jewelry (and I learned that if I want a Georgian "regard" ring that I'll only too likely forget to take off when showering/gardening, etc., I had better get a reproduction). The photos are simply wonderful, and dates are provided for most of the pieces, which I appreciate. I can't stop looking at it.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2012This book does have beautiful illustrations, but it lacks the depth of description that I would have liked to see. It also seems not to address the types of items that I have seen available to the average collector. However, it does provide a comprehensive review of the styles that were prevalent during this time period. I do highly recommend it for the anyone because of the photographs, but I would hope that there are other publications that the serious collector would consider to supplement it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024needed this for my trip to Bath and the Jane Austen Festival. Lo and behold, many pieces of my jewelry will work for this time period.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2014I bought this because I saw it referred to on an ebay listing I was considering and I'm so glad that I did. It is the most wonderful resource. If you love Georgian jewelry you simply must treat yourself to this lovely book. It is simply full of pictures of beautiful jewelry which Americans, like myself, simply never get to see. The cover alone is so beautiful--I keep it on my bedside table just to look at the beautiful cover.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2023Enjoyed reading it over and over again
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2020An honest title would be “Late Georgian Jewellery: 1780-1830” for it was a good reference guide to that period (the only reason I give it 4 stars) however, even the authors stated they favoured the later pieces and thought them to be the “apex” so most of what was featured would be “the last fifty” years (p. 26). I found this arbitrary judgment to be a) highly subjective, and b) dishonest (regarding the title and explicitly stated date range beginning in 1714) and c) frankly lazy. If you want to write about a period, you need to cover the entire period that you claim you will with impartiality, not make arbitrary judgments and leave those interested in other areas in the dark. Alternatively one should title the work appropriately. I should also add that châtelaines, seals, and fobs were briefly mentioned but hardly pictured despite being a major jewellery form of the era and one that the average collector can find in antique shops and markets; a more thorough mention would surely have been helpful as they are also little discussed in books on watches.
I would encourage the authors to apply their excellent research skills on the areas they were interested in toward a second, expanded edition that builds upon the strengths of this work to form a more complete compendium on Georgian Jewellery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Georgian jewellery
This is a good introduction to and overview of Georgian jewellery. The book illustrates mostly English jewellery though it also dips into French and German pieces. Most of the items shown are from the mid and late Georgian period. The majority of items illustrated were for women but it also includes a few examples of male jewellery. The book features colour photography throughout with plenty of full and half page pictures as well as many smaller pictures. The text is knowledgeable but not academic so the book suits general readers looking for a book to browse through. I liked that the book covers the sort of jewellery that middling folk might have possessed as well as royal and elite pieces.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great mix of images and text, enjoyable and informative
I really enjoyed this book - it's more of an intro to the major styles of the Georgian period. I did want something that also covered how jewelry was made, cutting techniques etc - this book didn't cover these and might have been even better for it. It's engagingly written and has good stories and insights. Well worth a flick through as the pictures are gorgeous and well described.
