Textile Landscape: Painting with Cloth in Mixed Media Hardcover – October 2, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Renowned author Cas Holmes brings together the world of the stitcher and that of the painter as she demonstrates her technique known as “stitch-sketching” and shows how to develop your approach to textile art. Focusing on the common language between the two forms, she begins with basic advice on keeping a sketchbook, stitching on paper and fabric, and working digitally. Cas then looks at both urban and intimate spaces, capturing the changing seasons, the technical aspects of painting and dying cloth, experimenting with photos, creating stitchscapes, attaining inspiration from found objects, and so much more.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2025I love everything about this book. Techniques, color theory, examples of current artist works. I’d recommend to anyone who works with fabrics to make their art.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2018The first thing you’ll notice is the texture of the cover. It feels like cloth. It’s beautiful. My advice is to first just page through the entire book and just soak in the visual aspects of the photograhs. They are a fabulous representation of textile art. Then go back through again and read the details about each photograh. Then delve into the text. You’ll notice that the “how to” sections like screen printing, for example, have intructions and suggestions listed. There are not a bunch of photos showing each step so from that standpoint it’s not an instruction manual. But there’s plenty of written instruction. Holmes’ descriptions of her own creative processes and those of other artists are fascinating, well written and readable. Even if you never actually do any of the art techniques, this book is a great addition to any crafting library. Enjoy!!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2018This isn't really a "how to" book. It isn't simply eye candy either. It's a generous look into this artist's process. Her observations and treatment of landscapes are superb. I recommend this book for textile and mixed-media artists. The binding and paper are beautiful, photographs and text are clear. The text is inspirational. I admit that I am biased. I am a Batsford fan!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2022This is a gorgeous book. And I'm more of a dyer than a fabric painter. But the book has a lovely ideas in it which I will definitely try.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2018The book is so well presented, beautifully illustrated. A real treat for the eyes and the imagination. Explaining the different forms of printmaking, how to apply these to cloth, utilizing different mediums that are “cloth” friendly. Pretreatments are explained and how to apply, easy to understand. With the different art featured with each design element , holds my interest and makes me want to work through the book, page by page. Well done, and worth every penny.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2019This book has lively text and excellent inspirational photos for moving from the landscape to textile. Good use of color and stitch. A number of artists are included so that many styles and techniques are illustrated. A solid buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirant et exaltant!
