There are instructions on setting up your studio and how to produce the detailed drawings.

The book covers every aspect of painting modern botanical-style portraits of flowers, from tips on gathering your references to Anna's six stage watercolour process.

Step-by-step instructions to create beautiful flower portraits, including:

Clematis

Cosmos

Shown from a side-on angle, this bright summer annual provides a great opportunity to create three-dimensional effects through tone.

viola

Viola

This little wintertime gem is a beautiful blue. As an exercise it allows us to focus on creating patterns and using the stippling brush technique to achieve rough visual texture on the petals.

clematis

Clematis

This clematis is dark and bright, so this is an exercise in achieving strong depth of colour with plenty of variation in hue while still retaining some light tones so that the flower does not look flat.

DAhlia

Dahlia

This glistening dahlia, is quite a challenge and I am including it for you to stretch yourself, and also for you to see that the seemingly different elements in it are all tackled in the exact same way as the other paintings in this book.

This is a fantastic guide that will inspire and challenge the experienced watercolour artist, while drawing in and reassuring the complete beginner.

Kindle Version is a Nearly Unusable Format
This book is not formatted properly for Kindle. It is nearly unreadable in this condition. This author must be tremendously disappointed to see her work so poorly presented. The sentences and paragraphs are so jumbled it makes the context very difficult to follow. Anna Mason is a talented artist and her printed book must surely much better than this. I like to paint along with the instructions and use my tablet or PC. I have tried this Kindle version on every piece of electronics I own. It does not display correctly. There are typos and odd spacing which I can overlook. But, inexcusable is the sentence structure that has been cut and pasted incorrectly. Sentences are fragmented and continue elsewhere, sometimes on a different page even, mixed with titles and image descriptions. It is impossible to make sense of some paragraphs. Single images are spliced onto several pages into such small fragments there is no value whatsoever. Other images are so light you cannot make out the form at all. This is a pathetic attempt at reproduction and should be immediately corrected. Anyone that has purchased this Kindle version is due a correctly formatted replacement.

if you have ever wanted to do fine watercoloring of flowers this is a book for you. I have always wanted to do this. I never had the skill. this delightful woman is so encouraging and a wonderful teacher (she gives wonderful advice on how to choose your paper and tools) i'm going into this slowly. I had started to do some watercoloring for a few years. I had started to improve, but it was a "hot mess" a lot of the time. it turns out, your paper and brushes and watercolors all make a huge difference in getting success. there are many styles of painting and this is just one of them. I have had very little training (except some online card classes and watching really good you tube videos - Sandy Allnock, Kristina Werner, Jennifer McGuire, Debbie Hughes, Kathy Racoosin are some of my favorites (they are cardmakers, but you can use their techniques for other kinds of painting) Have fun and enjoy!

Having just returned to watercolor painting, I've purchased various books to use as guides for reestablishing. This book, The Modern Flower painter is the best book I've read so far. Anna Mason is an expert on realism in watercolor painting. Her methods are excellent. I highly recommend this book.

I like Anna's painting style although mine is a bit different. I wish she had included the photographs of the projects in the book, although you can find some on her website if you join for the tutorials. You might not need the book if you joined as a member, but I ordered it before I joined. It is still a very nice reference book if you are interested in botanical painting. I actually discovered Anna from a Craftsy class. I have painted in oils forever but avoided watercolor due to it's unpredictability. I never felt I could control it. Between Anna's style and Billy Showell, I have learned how to use this medium and it is becoming a favorite. Oils are fun but take forever to dry. As an impatient person, I get immediate gratification using the glazing method with watercolor. For anyone who is a beginner my best advice is buy professional grade watercolors, decent synthetic brushes and good paper.

The information in the book (that which I could read) was informative and interesting; however, the editing leaves a lot to be desired. Words are separated, sentences and paragraphs are jumbled, random numbers appear and the list goes on. A good editing of this material would probably result in a very good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars vorbildliches Ebook & toller Inhalt
Reviewed in Germany on July 23, 2016
    Besonders gelungen:

Besonders malerisch: Susan Harrison-Tustain "Glorious Garden Flowers"

This book is great if someone is looking to make realistic flowers. I saw Anna's free youtube videos online and went for her book. I wanted to paint realistically in watercolour (which is v.hard) and this book helped me to achieve it mostly flowers-pink rose, clemantis, viola, cosmos, tulips, oriental poppy and dahlia with her detailed instructions. My painting has improved by following her method. However, leaves, dew-drops, stems are not discussed in this book..Her style is not fluid, but is perfect for building textures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful book and valuable learning resource
Reviewed in Canada on June 17, 2024
I held off on buying this book for a long time as I thought I really didn't need another step by step watercolour book. It is so stunning though that I couldn't resist, and I'm really glad I have it. The colours are incredibly beautiful, notably including her table of greens. The book is very visual and demonstrates clearly how to create those gorgeous colours on the paper through layering. lt's like some important elements of Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie made super easy to understand and follow. Same with creating hue and tone. It's very visual and explains things really well. So even if detailed watercolour isn't your preferred style, there is much to learn and practice about creating very beautiful colours with layering. Very well done.
