The Book of the Order of Chivalry Paperback – July 18, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Ramon Llull (1232-1316) composed The Book of the Order of Chivalry between 1274 and 1276 as both an instrument of reform and an agent for change. His aim was to create and codify the rules for a unilateral Order of Chivalry. Loyalty to the Order, coupled with common sense, religious faith, education, and martial prowess, were in his view the keys to victory in the Holy Land and the Reconquista. The book was an immediate success and widely disseminated across Europe, eventually reaching a medieval English audience, though through a fanciful translation of a translation by William Caxton, in which most of the stylistic nuances of the Catalan original were lost.
This new translation is directly from the original Catalan, so capturing for the first time in English the concise, austere style that characterises Llull's prose; it is presented with introduction and notes. It will be essential reading for all scholars and enthusiasts of medieval chivalric culture.
Noel Fallows is Associate Dean and Professor of Spanish at the University of Georgia, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Fallow's translation will make it possible for students to read and digest this critical treatise. To describe Fallow's translation as merely accessible and thus suited only for students, however, is to overlook what is a rigorous and scholarly translation. Indeed, Fallows succeeds in providing a translation that stays true to the original work and recaptures the essence of the author's original prose. ― THE MEDIEVAL REVIEW
Fallows has done a fine job in this edition. The prose is straightforward and plain-spoken, easily understandable to a modern reader impatient with period flourishes. ... It's an accessible and valuable scholarly resource for fields as diverse as medieval philosophy and military history. ― COMITATUS
[Provides] valuable insight into the mindset of the late Medieval knight and the expectations of Chivalric society. ― HISTORY OF WAR.ORG
Over the centuries that it was read this brief book retained its relevance but how that applied must have changed and so Llull has provided even the modern reader with a lens through which to view the medieval world. We must thank Professor Fallows for polishing up this lens and making it available for viewing. ― HOBILAR

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2014An excellent resource to search out and contemplate the development of the sacred interior life as the overarching code of moral virtue imbued in the ethos of the soldiers of Christ and the protectors of Mother Church. As well, an excellent applicative philosophy of character and purpose to assume and assimilate in the interior life of modern-day Christians.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2016Great book, and good translation. This book is an excellent guide for men to conduct themselves in the non-monastic life, with time tested and cherished virtue.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2017It provides a strong insight into the martial ethics of Western Europe during the Middle Ages.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2020I was really excited to read this book because of Blessed Llull's reputation as an influencer. I was told his writings greatly inspired St. Junipero Serra among others. I also love books on chivalry, so I was excited to learn more.
What a disappointment this book was! Llull mostly talks about basic ideas, but makes the discussion lengthy and tedious. For example, he talks about the virtues that squires (potential knights) should have. Most of it could be regarded as common sense. One interesting section though, is the symbolism of weapons, most particularly how a sword is specifically designed in the shape of the cross. For some reason, that had never occurred to me before. He also explains the symbolism of other handheld medieval weapons. There are a couple other good tidbits but they are few and far in between.
The book is also quite small for its list price of $29.95. Only 120 pages. Of those, the first 31 pages are introductory from the translator, then only 45 pages are of Llull's actual writings, then 20 pages of supplementary notes and resources. The current Kindle price of $22 for the ebook version is also exorbitant.
