The Ghost Army: Conning the Third Reich (Sirius Military History) Paperback – Illustrated, May 20, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Our story is about the genesis and evolution of these phantoms and men-who-never-were, these artists and magicians at the front line who operated in stealth and secrecy.
Throughout the course of World War II, Allied forces engaged in elaborate deceptions to fool Hitler's armies. A ragtag group of Bohemian artists and creatives were assembled to devise these strategies, including rubber dummy tanks, faux railway lines and falsified wireless intelligence. They made armies appear out of thin air, baffling German forces and ensuring Allied success in battle. For fifty years, information on the Ghost Army strategies was classified. It is only recently that details of their heroic actions have come to light.
This book includes details of SHAEF command centre who organised many of the deceptions, the First US Army Group (the so-called 'Ghost Army'), the 23rd Camouflage Engineers, and accounts of the double cross agents who risked their lives and freedom to mislead Nazi High Command. Featuring never-before-seen information from veteran interviews, The Ghost Army brings to life the fascinating story of the men and women who conned Adolf Hitler.

From the Publisher

Read about the warrior wizards and master illusionists of World War II who used camouflage and deception as the ultimate stealth weapon.
In a world of satellite imaging technology, computed-generated global communications and stealth weapons, the artifice and camouflage of the Ghost Army seem like quaint historical facts. But today’s digital wizardry stands on the shoulders of selected Tommies and GIs. The imagination and skills of these creatively gifted soldiers and academic boffins confounded Nazi troops and saved thousands of lives during the course of World War II.
Gerry and Janet Souter bring the story of the Ghost Army to life, narrating these extraordinary tales of deception with information gleaned from recently declassified military records, the unit diary of Frederic Fox, and an exclusive interview with Ghost Army veteran Bernie Burnstein.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2025While books are personal tastes, this is a "must read". It tells of deceptions that made the Nazis think the Allys had huge armies, when we had very little. Amazing, true and Ingenius.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024The authors had access to the soldiers who were charged with perpetrating the deception operations that preceded the Normandy invasion, as well as others. Truth is strange than fiction, and the authors have done an excellent job of telling what really happened, and what were the outcomes.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2019Gerry and Janet Souter bring the story of the Ghost Army to life in this fascinating book. Their extensive research and stellar story telling skills make this book a must read for anyone interested in military history, tactics and especially WWII. I so appreciated the background they provided in other distract and deflect actions in fooling the Nazis. I have seen a documentary regarding the Ghost Army, and read other mentions, but The Souters' provided more insight and revelations than anything else I've seen or read. I would love to see a film based on this book, but at the very least it would make a superb book discussion selection.
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019There are a few books out on this unit, and most are not very good. This one appears to be a pretty thin compilation of material from those books that have come before, sometimes with almost no altering of the words. In places, it makes inexcusable errors that indicate the authors really do not know the subject and are just trying to cash in on other’s work and the recent popularity of this subject. The never before seen interviews are quite frankly, not at all interesting and fall into the "yes, we were in the war" superficial category . If you want to really know about the military aspects of the 23rd, the main book to read is “Ghosts of the ETO” by Gawne. If you want to know about the artistic work by the men then read “The Ghost Army of WWII” by Beyer.
