Renowned guitarist Steve Howe tells his own story in his own words, often unflinchingly as he recounts times of triumph and torment amidst the cream of the UK's prog rock bands. Best known for his work with Yes, a group prone to sudden upheavals, and AOR supergroup Asia, Steve Howe's passage through these and other bands is a roller-coaster ride of constant touring, tense recording sessions, and frequent trips to all corners of the globe. A workaholic, he soon realised that the temptations of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle weren't for him and instead dedicated his life to excellence in musicianship. Born in North London in 1947, Steve got his first guitar at the age of 12 and thereafter devoted himself passionately to mastering its intricacies. After spells in psychedelic bands of the late sixties, he was invited to join Yes in 1970, thus finding himself in a spotlight that shines to this day. In the meantime he raised a family, adopted vegetarianism as a lifestyle, and watched as many of his peers succumbed to the impulses he managed to avoid. As well as Yes and Asia, Steve has led bands of his own, released numerous solo recordings in many different musical styles and amassed a legendary collection of priceless stringed instruments.

As a devoted admirer of this man's guitar accomplishments and legacy, showcased brilliantly by his arrival in YES in 1970, I found this book to be a treasure trove of interesting details and insights that one could only glean from the words of the player himself. Steve Howe is a guitarist's-guitarist as is so clearly exemplified in his life-time achievements and accolades throughout the music industry and beyond. I appreciated very much the honesty and frankness within these pages and can readily understand the view point as seen thru the eyes of one very dedicated and serious artist. From what I have witnessed over the decades, he is equally demanding of himself as he is of others, and that perfectionism shows clearly in his live performances, solo endeavors, and expansive body of work. To play Clap and a plethora of other equally tricky pieces flawlessly, night after night, is no small stroll in the park! Doing so for decades affirms the hours and commitment this guitarist has applied to his craft. The gem I enjoyed most about this book (besides the detailed insights into childhood and upbringing) was being able to go back title by title and pull up the songs that he was referencing from the past (both online and in my own collection) and re-explore the vast array of compositions and styles that have spanned his 60 years of dedication to "all things guitar"...! I sincerely appreciate this endeavor to share his story and respect unfailingly the efforts and sacrifices he has made in doing so. I know of no one more faithful to the instrument, in all its facets. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and intend to get a printed copy for my bookshelf collection as soon as it is released...

I've been eagerly awaiting this release for the past few months and downloaded it here in the US in April 2020 since the hardcover for some reason won't be available until this September. Howe is hands down my favorite guitarist and I'm a huge Yes fan but also a fan of his solo work, Asia, and collaborations with others. The most enjoyable part of All My Yesterdays is probably the first half where Howe talks about his upbringing, which as a fan for 30 years, I did not recall knowing much about. It was interesting to get insight into the home life of Howe when he was a child, his attitude towards school, his family, and his music. Taking the reader through his time in his early bands like Tomorrow and Bodast before joining Yes is really interesting as he vividly portrays what it must've been like at this time for him as a young guitarist learning the ropes of recording, performing live, and being part of a band.

His early days in Yes are also covered very well, though most of this information has been cited obviously over the years in thousands of interviews, books, and various specials. If you're looking for inside gossip, there is some here and there (most of his thoughts concentrating on some of Rick Wakeman's behavior, from the Tales era to the infamous Paris sessions to as recent as the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony), but nothing too inflammatory other than clearly the two did not get on very well at times.

When speaking throughout about his love of family and music (early influences as well as new discoveries), the book is truly joyous to read. The one negative critique I will have is that about 3/4 of the way through (the book flows chronologically for the most part, so this is about the 1989-1991 time period), it starts to read more like Howe just reciting journal entries he must've kept along the way. Entire paragraphs seem to just a listing of tour start and end dates (with some geographical errors in places), or accounting for what projects he was working on at the time. Some of these details pause for a moment for reflection or an interesting story, but some pages just come across as a strict listing of details that after a while do not really offer anything interesting other than just showcasing how busy Howe has been over the past 20+ years.

The surprise to me of this book--and maybe as a long-time follower of Yes I shouldn't have been that surprised--is that it really seems that Yes has functioned as a very unhappy unit ever since ABWH/Union. Some passages as written by Howe just made me feel bad that he was even putting up with being a part of the group at moments such as the early 00s when he recounts substance abuse problems affecting the band's performance, the making-of Fly From Here as being particularly unhappy dealing with Chris Squire, and as recent as the recording of Heaven & Earth with its comical production process (mixing by Skype!?!?!). I think at one point around this time, Howe himself even exclaims to the reader around this time period, "How stupid are we?!?!" So, that is a bit of a bummer and in retrospect confirms what I've thought since about 2008 is that Howe may be happier and better off just focusing on his solo career and collaborations than continuing with Yes in its various incarnations but seemingly consistent dysfunction. However, this is not up to me and I respect Howe if he continues to think it's worthwhile to tour with the current version.

This is a must read for Howe & Yes fans. Howe has been involved in so many projects over the course of his career that it's inevitable that readers like me will wish he focused on one particular era or project more than he did, but overall this is a very good book and an easy, enjoyable read.

While occasionally getting caught up in the details, this is an easy and enjoyable read that provides a fascinating insight into Steve Howe’s professional and personal life. It’s amazing to me to read the insights that Steve has developed over his years in the music industry as well as his personal experiences as a performer.

I was at My Father’s Place in Roslyn when he joined Steve Morse on stage and it was an amazing experience that made me a fan ever since. Seeing that mentioned struck a chord - if you’ll pardon the pun. I’m sure others will similarly enjoy aligning their experiences seeing him perform with Steve’s descriptions of these tours!

As a fan who grew up with Asia and Yes, reading about the evolution of both bands over the years was equally enjoyable. If you love music and want to get an insider’s view this is also the book for you. Thoroughly enjoyable book.

Steve Howe is by far my favorite guitarist of all times, but i have been warned by other readers and it took me quite a while to get my eyes upon it. A one of a kind of a book, but in the wrong side. Merely a long and boring list of tour dates, endless list of mikes used on each track. And nothing, or so little, on the human side of this incredible journey. One line, when Tony Kaye, Bill Bruford or Patrick Moraz left Yes. Nothing on the interaction and musical merits of his long term bandmates. All in all, pointless, and by far the worst biography by a musician, and i have read many of them.
