In a society that pushes conformity, how can you courageously choose to be who you really are—with yourself, in your relationships, and at work—despite the fear of judgment? In The Authenticity Principle, award-winning leadership and diversity expert Ritu Bhasin gives you the tools to make this happen. Combining the latest neuroscience, leadership, diversity, and mindfulness research with a wealth of practical exercises, Bhasin unveils a cutting-edge framework for living and leading more authentically. She also reveals inspiring insights from a range of leaders who have overcome barriers to being authentic – including her own personal journey from lawyer to entrepreneur. Developed after years of working with global leaders and organizations, the book has at its core the transformational concept of the Three Selves. This new way of understanding authenticity will empower you to fearlessly and strategically choose how and when to show up as your Authentic Self and your Adapted Self, leaving behind your Performing Self. Ritu Bhasinshows that choosing to live authentically is the most important step you can take to thrive in your personal life, your relationships, and your career. More than just a call to “be yourself,” The Authenticity Principle is a rallying cry to disrupt the status quo, bring your differences into the light, and help others do the same.

About the Author

Ritu Bhasin didn't always feel empowered to be an unapologetic, fiercely authentic leader. While she was highly successful and living the "corporate dream" in her early career, Ritu had a startling realization: the person she was in her day-to-day life bore little resemblance to her true self. Because of her experiences with racism and bullying, she found herself minimizing racial, religious, gender, and class-based aspects of her identity to "fit in" among circles where she felt she didn't belong. And in doing this, she was profoundly unhappy. After much soul-searching, Ritu decided to transform her life. She completed her MBA, left her corporate job, launched her own business, became a mindfulness practitioner and teacher, and dedicated her life to helping others become more empowered and inclusive. Most importantly, she committed to living as authentically as possible in all that she did going forward. In 2010, Ritu launched bhasin consulting inc., a diversity and inclusion-focused consulting firm, and has since gained a global reputation for her work in leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and women's advancement. Through her work, Ritu is committed to disrupting the status quo to build a world in which each of us celebrates our own differences and the differences of others. She has delivered talks to thousands, inspiring leaders to be more inclusive, and encouraging those who have experienced oppression to be more empowered. Ritu has won numerous awards for her work, including the City of Toronto's William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations. Ritu lives in Toronto, Canada, but travels all over the world to eat, swim, hike, dance, and work.

Ritu Bhasin, LL.B. MBA, is an award-winning speaker, author, and expert in belonging, equity, leadership, and empowerment, and is the CEO of bhasin consulting inc., a renowned DEI consulting firm that has worked with hundreds of organizations internationally.

A passionate advocate for living and leading authentically, Ritu has presented to hundreds of thousands globally and coached over a thousand professionals to cultivate and claim belonging. She’s living proof of what can happen when you stand in your power while fighting the hate and hardships in your way.

But Ritu didn’t always feel empowered to be an unapologetic, fiercely authentic person. Born in Toronto, Canada, to Sikh Punjabi immigrant parents, Ritu experienced the constant sting of racist bullying growing up, while also struggling with cultural tension about her identities. She carried her childhood trauma into adulthood, where she felt constant pressure to mask her authentic self across most of her relationships and in her work life, first as a lawyer and then as an HR leader at a global law firm.

While trying to convince herself that she was living the “dream,” Ritu had a startling realization: because of relentless experiences with hate and life hardships, she was minimizing her authenticity to “fit in” among circles where she felt she didn’t belong. And in doing so, she was profoundly unhappy.

Looking to transform her life through the power of healing, Ritu left her corporate job, launched her global DEI consulting firm, became a yoga and mindfulness practitioner and teacher, studied trauma and wellness healing practices, wrote the bestselling book The Authenticity Principle, and dedicated her life to empowering others. Most importantly, she committed to living as authentically as possible to claim belonging for herself and others.

Ritu’s mission in life is to help create a more empowered, inclusive, and inspired world by unlocking belonging for all. She wants everyone to experience the magic that comes with living their truth.

Ritu still lives in Toronto but travels the world to eat, swim, dance, hike, and work.

Included many thoughts to ponder during self assessment and formulating plan of action to become my best most authentic self. I just retired, (injured/disabled at 70) after being a workaholic registered nurse for 45 years. I was at a crossroads and stumbled upon this book on Amazon. So glad I did. Really helped me put things in perspective as I redesign my life plan going forward. I highly recommend it. Just remember to take it suggestion, not bible.

When we become aware of this within our consciousness, life becomes much more fulfilling and our value system is open to creating a powerful momentum towards maximizing our potential as a unique individual. She’s writes effortlessly in a meaningful and empowering way. Highly recommended for those seeking to maximize their inner potential.

I’m so happy I got to see Ritu give her presentation on The Authenticity Principle over the summer. This is a must read!

Ritu Bhasin's book, The Authenticity Principle, is a must-read and I'm not just saying that because Ritu is in my "brain trust!" While authenticity may be a buzz word these days, Ritu does an incredible job connecting it to inclusion, which is something I tremendously value as a diversity and inclusion strategist. As she so astutely says, "Authenticity is the antidote to exclusion and the key ingredient for building a more inclusive work environment." Whether you're an individual seeking to bring more of your authentic self to your interactions or if you're an organization strategizing about how to foster a more inclusive workplace, this book is for you! It was incredibly impactful to think about authenticity using Ritu's Three Selves concept and to remember that there is power in choosing how authentic you want to be in a given situation. I was recently invited to speak at Ciena, a telecommunications company headquartered in MD, about bringing one's authentic self to work and my references to Ritu and her book were very positively received. Thank you, Ritu, for writing this book and for all that you do to make the world a better place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read and practical

Wow. My head is still spinning from all of the “a has” this book has given me. A must read for all, but especially those of us who struggle to be “seen” and accepted in our workplaces and more broadly in society due to our differences. Very easy to read and practical. I actually feel like I am walking away with a concrete set of tools that I can apply to my daily life that will help me be more content and effective at work and in my relationships, and also just within myself. This is a really really good read. Well done.

Written in highly readable, relatable prose, and weaving in the author's personal stories with practical solutions, this is a must-read for anyone who has ever felt pressure to be someone other than themselves. This book will empower you to push back against the people and institutions who don't want to accept you as you are.
