Ritu Bhasin didn't always feel empowered to be an unapologetic, fiercely authentic leader. While she was highly successful and living the "corporate dream" in her early career, Ritu had a startling realization: the person she was in her day-to-day life bore little resemblance to her true self. Because of her experiences with racism and bullying, she found herself minimizing racial, religious, gender, and class-based aspects of her identity to "fit in" among circles where she felt she didn't belong. And in doing this, she was profoundly unhappy. After much soul-searching, Ritu decided to transform her life. She completed her MBA, left her corporate job, launched her own business, became a mindfulness practitioner and teacher, and dedicated her life to helping others become more empowered and inclusive. Most importantly, she committed to living as authentically as possible in all that she did going forward. In 2010, Ritu launched bhasin consulting inc., a diversity and inclusion-focused consulting firm, and has since gained a global reputation for her work in leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and women's advancement. Through her work, Ritu is committed to disrupting the status quo to build a world in which each of us celebrates our own differences and the differences of others. But Ritu didn’t always feel empowered to be an unapologetic, fiercely authentic person. Born in Toronto, Canada, to Sikh Punjabi immigrant parents, Ritu experienced the constant sting of racist bullying growing up, while also struggling with cultural tension about her identities. She carried her childhood trauma into adulthood, where she felt constant pressure to mask her authentic self across most of her relationships and in her work life, first as a lawyer and then as an HR leader at a global law firm.

And in doing so, she was profoundly unhappy.

Looking to transform her life through the power of healing, Ritu left her corporate job, launched her global DEI consulting firm, became a yoga and mindfulness practitioner and teacher, studied trauma and wellness healing practices, wrote the bestselling book The Authenticity Principle, and dedicated her life to empowering others. Most importantly, she committed to living as authentically as possible to claim belonging for herself and others.

    Ritu Bhasin's book, The Authenticity Principle, is a must-read and I'm not just saying that because Ritu is in my "brain trust!" While authenticity may be a buzz word these days, Ritu does an incredible job connecting it to inclusion, which is something I tremendously value as a diversity and inclusion strategist. As she so astutely says, "Authenticity is the antidote to exclusion and the key ingredient for building a more inclusive work environment." Whether you're an individual seeking to bring more of your authentic self to your interactions or if you're an organization strategizing about how to foster a more inclusive workplace, this book is for you! It was incredibly impactful to think about authenticity using Ritu's Three Selves concept and to remember that there is power in choosing how authentic you want to be in a given situation. I was recently invited to speak at Ciena, a telecommunications company headquartered in MD, about bringing one's authentic self to work and my references to Ritu and her book were very positively received.
