Tree: A Life Story Paperback – August 7, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
The story of a single tree, from the moment the seed is released from its cone until, more than five hundred years later, it lies on the forest floor as a nurse log, giving life to ferns, mosses, and hemlocks, even as its own life is ending.
In this unique biography, David Suzuki and Wayne Grady tell story that spans a millennium and includes a cast of millions but focuses on a single tree, a Douglas fir, Tree describes in poetic detail the organism’s modest origins that begin with a dramatic burst of millions of microscopic grains of pollen. The authors recount the amazing characteristics of the species, how they reproduce and how they receive from and offer nourishment to generations of other plants and animals. The tree’s pivotal role in making life possible for the creatures around it — including human beings — is lovingly explored. The richly detailed text and Robert Bateman’s original art pay tribute to this ubiquitous organism that is too often taken for granted.
Revised edition with a foreword by Peter Wohlleben, author of The Hidden Life of Trees.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2009I wasn't sure what to expect when I spotted this book about trees at the local library. As curious as any future-environmentalist/botanist, I couldn't help but peruse the asthetically-pleasing book cover. The artwork and simple quote on the back cover conveyed this aura of mystery and reverance for it's subject that did not go unnoticed. I sensed that this was going to be far more than a bland book about trees. Intrigued, I borrowed it from the library.
After the assimilation of the very first chapter, I was hooked. I did not have within my capacity the strength to put the book down. Within mere hours, I devoured the entirety of the text, completely unaware that there was a world around me. It was so beautifully-written and in language that did not require a Ph.D in botany. This book opened up a world I never really had ever given much thought to. I can honestly say, that after reading this text, I will never be able perceive trees as these inanimate objects, fixed passively on this Earth.
This book is a must-read for everyone. It brings to light the magnificent power of nature whilst conveying this indescribable humility.
Seriously, read it. This book has definitely earned a place within my personal library.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2013David Suzuki has always been one of my favorite documentarians, and he has excelled in this book. I have little time to read any longer, but bought it because I noticed, in addition, that the sketches were done by Robert Bateman, an exceptionally talented artist specializing in dramatic, gorgeous and technically exquisite paintings and art. So now I am doubly hooked, for this book is as delightful as any of Suzuki's other works. The concept is creative, and the two chapters I have managed since it was delivered were his usual caliber.
My thanks to the company I bought it from. Other than a little sticky dirt on the back where a tag was removed, it was in mint condition, and even included, to my delight, a hand-signed card from Dr. Suzuki. I am totally content with quality of book and quality of seller, and look forward to stolen moments to read and reread this lovely volume.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2014I fell in love with this book. David Suzuki has a way with words and nature and has blended the two beautifully. The story of life....all life is what I found when reading about our trees...the trees that care about one another and provide such life sustaining elements to all that are near and far. This book helped awaken a deep sense of gratefulness within me....and so I now touch trees and thank them for the gifts they give so abundantly. Muir Woods in Northern California is my all time favorite place to be with them.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2020But this story shows a life as intense as a human's. Suzuki and Grady make this a highly accessible science narrative. Some may wish to skim the technical and breathe in the poetical. Lay arborists and ecologists will get a fine intro to forest processes and fully engage with the lifespan of a single Douglas fir.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2019As a fan of the outdoors, and trees, I've read quite a few books about trees. This one has a very unique viewpoint and for that reason it stands out. This book follows the life of a single tree and shows that trees are much more vital and important than we might have thought. For hundreds of years a big tree impacts the landscape in so many ways, as the author shows. Very interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2023Excellent.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2013My great interest in the subject lead me to buy this, I'd seen it quoted in other books. Now I find that David Suzuki has a wealth of information on the natural world. I'm reading Tree: A life story for the second time. Lots and lots of detail, and yet an overview of The Tree in it's place in the natural world.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2012This is an excellent book that actually explains how a tree works - an explanation that is not easy to find. It is beatifully written and not too technical. I bought two extra copies for gifts. Informative and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Baumgeschichte
