Review
--Elizabeth, a patient with lupus
"This is a book that I wholeheartedly recommend for fellow sufferers of a chronic disease. It takes the reader on a journey that covers many of the concerns a person with a chronic disease has; such as how you can handle your illness, how to interact with doctors, how to handle other people's responses to your illness, and how others can help. I will use this as a guide in my journey with my chronic disease."
--Lisa, a patient with dermatomyositis
"You can feel the pain of his maladies and yet the author's powerful commitment to not allow it to affect the responsibilities of a father, a husband, or an educator. Most of all, I was moved by his heart in honestly sharing the journey that it might offer encouragement to those who find themselves similarly afflicted when there is no cure. This book should be required reading by every medical student."
--Edward Langston, MD, family physician (retired) and former chairman of the Board of Trustees for the American Medical Association
"This book touched my heart. It is filled with practical advice and hope for patients and healthcare providers. Very pertinent and encompassing, it is filled with pearls of wisdom. This book should be on the reading list of all who care for, live with, or know individuals with chronic suffering. His journey and acquired wisdom are a reminder that people can thrive despite a chronic disorder and that indeed 'life is more than good health.'"
--Charles E. Sanders, Jr.,MD, FACP, FACR, rheumatologist and former vice president of medical education and research, Mount Carmel Health System

- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2020What a gift this book has been! In addition to being very well written and proofread (I couldn’t find one single typo, which is so rare these days), it contains such a helpful combination of personal experience, heartfelt advice, and practical steps for living with a chronic illness. Once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. The book is structured in such a way that that you are easily led from validation to actionable steps. Although there were times when I found myself disagreeing the author on a few minor points, the feeling I had was that I was in conversation with him, which was very constructive to me. The icing on the cake is the author’s ability to bring his own hardships into the narrative in a way that enriches all of this practical advice and opinions on various topics related to living with a chronic illness. I’m in awe of how the author has been able to not only live with, but truly thrive and help others in spite of all his physical and emotional pain. If you’re facing a chronic illness and you’re looking for a book that will help you navigate this difficult terrain, this is the best I have found so far (and I’m so grateful that I did!).
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2019Conceived out of the depths of personal experience, Dr. Svensson has developed this book as a practical guide for those afflicted with physically debilitating issues, including those associated with unexplained symptoms, for which curative or even palliative treatments are either nonexistent or generally unsatisfactory. Each chapter opens with a narrative describing his own encounter with a particular facet of an incapacitating ailment, the sense of frustration he has faced, and how his approach to meeting its impact has evolved over time, enabling him to thrive in his personal and professional life as a leading educator and academic administrator in the face of physical trials. This very skillfully written book meets a need not currently found in existing self-help books and is highly recommended for patients, as well as their loved ones and caregivers.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019The title caught my attention, especially the word thrive. Then, I opened this book and by the time I read just part of the introduction, I was hooked. Words like "story", "matter of the heart", and "invite" just drew me in. I reluctantly put it down, but within a week a book I didn’t think I had time to read was finished. When There Is No Cure is packed with practical and insightful recommendations beautifully woven with Dr. Svensson's chronic illness journey.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2019The author was able to effectively blend his extensive real world experience of being a patient with life altering chronic illnesses with his extensive experience as a healthcare provider, teacher, researcher, and leader. The narration of this unique blend of experiences helps to create a holistic view of the humanistic issues that are infrequently discussed when trying to deal with chronic illnesses. The book is a valuable resource for patients, families, and providers who are trying to assist patients and loved ones with managing the many aspects of chronic illness.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022This book offers much mechanical advice for dealing with doctors when you’re chronically ill and being kind to others who suffer. All good. Until the last chapter when you’re back handed by the preaching about Jesus Christ and that the enemy is death. Guess what? We all die! There are other ways to peace while living with illness without the brainwashing and propaganda. Christian values and beliefs hurt people and cause suffering. I’ve been a victim. Don’t fall for it. There are other much more helpful books on Amazon that are truly emotionally supportive with practical advice for actually coping with chronic illness while you are living instead of a false hope for a better life when you’re dead.
