5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, sanity-saving publication with lots of information and extra resources!
Planning my family's trip to China without a travel agent or guide was proving to be a stressful nightmare until I discovered Josh Summers' book online. Relief is the first thing I felt when I saw the online table of contents and when I finally got the book in my hands I was, well, overjoyed! There are plenty of resources out there on what to do and see but very little on HOW to do it.
Before getting the book I was depending on information that I found on the internet and the advice of other travelers and expats which, to say the least, was generally conflicting and confusing which is natural since their advice was based solely on their visit and their experiences which introduces so many variables. It was enough to make me crazy.
Josh's book includes just about anything you need to know and has links to other online resources on his website and other sites. AND, if you have a question his book doesn't answer, you can email him and he will get back to you. How's that for top-notch customer service and satisfaction? I also bought the digital version of the book so that I can easily read it on my Kindle app and click on the links that are right in the book. I'm going into the trip knowing that I've done my due diligence with the best information available by using this book and accompanying resources (which are free!).
I do have one disclaimer for my review. Since we won't take our trip for another few weeks, I can't comment on how accurate or reliable the information is but I will say that I have GREAT confidence that the money I spent on the book and the time I invested planning our trip based on his tips and resources will be well spent. If it's permissible, I'll gladly amend my review to reflect my findings upon our return. Keep up the great work, Josh, and thank you for all of your help.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2019I loved the book. I had to wait for a friend to bring it to me, and once I had it in my hands, I practically read it in one sitting! It feels really like chatting to a friend, asking him a bunch of questions about China, and getting many more answers than the questins you originally had. Josh describes his experiences in a very personal yet non-judgemental way, making it easier for you as a reader to decide for yourself. I liked the big fonts and how easy it was to read, but I particularly loved how he covers many topics that I hadn't even anticipated, so at the end of your reading, you have a very clear idea of what traveling to China will be like, plus a bunch of useful links to look into. It's been great help for planning my trip. I am very grateful!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2019This is a very comprehensive book. I don't think the info on ATM use is accurate. In my experience, ATM always gives you the best exchange rate in foreign countries. And with the Schwab debit card, there are no ATM fees (or at least you get reimbursed for all fees).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2019This book is interesting, helpful, fun, and well written! I can't think of anything that one needs to know about traveling to and in China that is not covered within it. I've traveled to China three times before (although one was to Hong Kong, so that's very different) but the last time was in 08 and I had forgotten a lot of the subtleties of culture and the norms that one needs to know. Was very glad that I came across this book and read it! I leave again for China in a few days. I think anyone going to China from an English-speaking country would find this helpful. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019This is one of the best guidebooks I've seen in terms of questions I've been asked as coordinator of a program for new arrivals to Beijing. It goes way beyond the usual travel advice (food, weather, etc.) and delves into a lot of detail on the often-befuddling world of VPNs, SIM cards, visas, etc., questions that usually lead to a spiral of trawling TripAdvisor message boards from 2012 without a definite answer.
Josh really has a heart for helping people get the most out of their time in China, and I've recommended Josh's website as well as resources he's linked to many times. If you're planning a visit or (especially) a move to China, I highly recommend this book as well as his website!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2019This is a hard one. I am in between of 3 & 4 stars. I have decided to go with 3 stars because I felt it was targeted more for US citizen. There are some good information in there like how to take the train which I found really useful and also his recommendation of tour operators. Other than that, it wasn't exactly what I needed. Plus if you read Josh's website; a lot of these information from the book is already on his website. So, I don't know why I paid for it. But I guess it will work for some but not what I am looking for.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2019I've been reading Josh's information about China for several months. I found this book to be very nice because all the info is in one place. Does he answer ALL the questions anyone might have (like the 3* reviewer)? No but that would be impossible. What this book does is give you a lot of guidance about a lot of things, some of which have probably not occurred to you yet. Along with this are many links to further guidance. If you're planning a trip to China, this book can't possibly NOT be beneficial in some way. And the price is wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2019This book is an absolute treasure chest of helpful, practical information for anyone with an interest in, or plan to travel to China. Not only will the clearly curated info save time spent researching and help avoid travel headaches, but the writing is also witty and enjoyable. Summers invites the reader into a friendly conversation. It is the travel book equivalent of the best possible trip preparation: sitting at the table with a friend who happens to be a seasoned expert in the country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide to travelling in China
I have been living in China for almost four years so this book caught my attention when Josh started promoting it. I started reading with the mindset of being able to add some important details to help Josh in the case of a 2nd edition but found that it covered pretty much everything I could think of! It also has lots of small and useful details that I think many travelers may have not even considered.
An honest and accurate guide to China, very different from the usual 'sunshine and rainbows' guides you occasionally see regarding China.
Overall good. I would have liked it to have come out before I started living in China, it would have potentially saved me from some mishaps!
