Review

"The modern scientific world has no patience for the 'paranormal.' High strangeness experiences are explained away as dumb luck, coincidence, or misperception. Surely, we're told, no educated person could possibly believe in telepathy, spirits, ghosts, or magic. But in a spellbinding series of true vignettes in the life of college professor Bruce Olav Solheim, the paranormal is vibrantly alive. Timeless is not about belief. It's about genuine experiences that science has yet to understand. Highly recommended."

...Bruce relates the many paranormal experiences he has had from childhood through adolescence to adulthood - they are myriad, all interesting, some fascinating, some miraculous, but all are immensely readable. Release your preconceived notions and enter a fascinating new world with Bruce Solheim. --Grady Harp, San Francisco Review of Books

I discovered Bruce Solheim's story while watching his interview on Jeffrey Mishlove's program, "New Thinking Allowed" on YouTube. I actually paused the interview to purchase "Timeless" and then read it all in one sitting. That was earlier today. Yes, it was that interesting. While I've hardly experienced the array of supernatural events that have punctuated the author's entire life, I have had enough unique, inexplicable things happen to be very curious about OPS - other people's spirits - especially when the teller is intelligent, lucid, humble and - doubly extraordinary in a ghost-hunting-reality-show-crazy world - hyperbole-free. And, in my own life, discovering psychic abilities was not necessarily a happy event. After all, the world pretty much responds with eye-rolls and derision. Telling folks you can sometimes pick up messages from "dead" people is a mixed bag. Even when messages are evidential and incontrovertible, people can be dismayed. Perhaps I wanted "Timeless" to be a "how to" book on how to proceed with such an unlikely skill set. Instead, I got something much better - a satisfying, yet cautionary tale for the ages...

Btw, this autobiography would have been compelling enough without any "ghost stories" at all. Isaac Bashevis Singer once said that to tell about one place really well is to tell about the whole world: Solheim's life takes him to different places, but his search for meaning and how to matter on earth is deeply rooted in his Norwegian ancestry and yet, true to our generation - we are the same age: 60 - very much affected by being in the last tech-free age and one who watched the war in Vietnam rage on our TVs and in the bodies and souls of people we loved. Solheim's accomplishments, both because of and despite his intercontinental upbringing, are as numerous as the strange events along the way. In the end, the "place he tells about "really well" is his own spirit; and how he wrangled his personal, intellectual life and career to - eventually and certainly - live in peace.

For entertainment value, the sheer variety of paranormal episodes described in "Timeless" were impressive and surprising. I found myself re-reading every single one of them - and I've read way more than my share of "lives of mystics". For readers who are fervent materialists - ones who come to scoff and worse - I think it's terrific that Solheim doesn't defend or justify a bit of it. Actually, his laconic accounting made it even more believable. Without spoiling the plot, the variety of not altogether pleasant events that unfolded over decades was beyond unexpected. Not since "The Boy Who Saw True" has there been such a genuine accounting of a supernatural life, one that was often experienced reluctantly.

Because those interested in the particulars of the author's work can read about it elsewhere, I won't duplicate his CV here. And I want to close by thanking Professor Solheim for writing this book. I truly believe the veil is thinning and "Timeless" is heartening to many of us who feel certain about an afterlife - not the heaven and hell of religious mythology, but one that's rich and interconnected with what matters most to us while we're in these difficult "skin schools".

When someone has experienced situations that are literally extra-ordinary and can explain them with such vivid descriptions, I'm hooked. That is exactly what this book did for me. Bruce writes about his life-long paranormal experiences in such a manner that it makes the reader feel as if you are right there with him. This is not an easy thing to do, in my opinion. With a deep, spiritual connection to his ancestral roots in Norway, Bruce wonderfully weaves paranormal accounts throughout the book about the various times he has spent abroad, in addition to some hair-raising encounters here in the U.S.

I don't get rattled easily when it comes to talk of the paranormal; however, I certainly did a number of times throughout this book. With a mixture of uneasy and welcoming encounters, Bruce's way with descriptions might in fact make you rethink some of your own experiences, especially if you have ever doubted their validity.

A fantastic read for anyone interested in hearing not only about someone's very personal observations of the paranormal realm, but also for those who need reassurance that they too are not alone in connecting with the supernatural.

Bruce writes, "It's not that I believe in ghosts, it's that they believe in me, so I've no choice."

I do hope Bruce writes a second book about this subject, as I am sure the paranormal experiences aren't about to cease for him any time soon.

Just finished "Timeless: A Paranormal Personal History" after buying it while the author was being interviewed on Rex Bear's "Leak Project" YouTube show yesterday. As I said in the live chat, Bruce seemed to be an honest man with interesting stories to tell, and his book in Kindle form is only $2.99, so why not? As someone who grew up with ghosts and oddities myself, I wanted to hear his stories in more detail and, just as importantly, how he went about telling them. The book is only a few hours of dedicated reading time long, told in biographical bites surrounding primarily Bruce's experiences with entities throughout his life. What most impresses me about his stories isn't the ghostly figures, but his honesty concerning tumult in his personal life for many years. I'm three years younger than Bruce, so found myself comparing his biographical details to where I was in my life during those same years. In the end, I feel about this book as I did about the author during Rex's interview -- this is honest, simple autobiography, with the ghost sightings serving as a structure to tell his story. Recommended.

The first-person account of the author's lifelong interaction with the paranormal. Most of us never have a true psychic/paranormal experience. I believe some people do. Timeless Esoterica is the candid telling of what it's like to live with one foot on "the other side." Unquestionably true accounts are presented in a series of vignettes told in chronological order. The illustrations dovetail nicely with the text. The author's credentialed as an academic but writes prose in plain English that's very readable. Anyone with an interest in the paranormal should read it. Read it first for the story and then a level deeper for the insight. You'll want to read it twice. Recommended.

This is the third book I have read by Bruce Solheim and this one is by far my favorite. He writes about each one of his experiences as if you are there with him. It is easy to read and I had the nervous butterflies in my stomach for some of his encounters. At times I would break from reading to look up some of these locations he has been to and wrote about (Barrow, Alaska for example). Seeing the locations made these stories come to life. Very addicting to read.

I heard author interviewed on CJOB(Winnipeg) radio-sounded interesting so I ordered the Kindle version. I thought there might some definitive, verifiable experiences. But mostly a series of supposed paranormal "incidents",and some unnecessary personal information that didn't seem to belong. Surely extraordinary claims should be backed up with strong evidence? Wouldn't recommend.
